    I was taught when leaving the yard do not expect to be home as scheduled FYI traffic,weather,accidents,breakdowns and anything what can go wrong will go wrong so be prepared if you don't like it change career because this is the nature of transportation everyday is different and when you think you know everything stop driving for a living because your dangerous you should remember it's always learning and you will never know everything and after twenty years driving from Dublin to Moscow from Helsinki to Istanbul ,from driving from the yard to my house I never had the same trip twice every time it was different and still lots to learn ps hope you enjoy your career as I loved it everyday

    I can't believe they directed traffic off the A34 onto the A343 at Wash common and then directed towards Andover rather than through Newbury/Basingstoke. That A343 is abysmal for large vehicles (e.g buses that I drive), and in snow, the hills out of Highclere and Hurstbourne would be extremely risky. great videos and keep safe.

    I remember this well, recoverd an artic from Portsmouth to chandlers ford.. 8 an half hours later i finally got back to fareham. Everybody doing 5 mph on the motorway didn't help, you go slow and the snow can settle. I carried on down in lane 2/3 in deep snow to keep grip not a problem,

    Given how little it took to bring the low loader ahead of you to a halt, it makes it so clear why the Norwegian authorities stop all the trucks arriving without winter tyres. Given the UK doesn't get extreme snow often, I reckon even just swapping 1 tyre on each side of the drive axle to a proper winter tyre that can grip in the cold and snow might have been enough to at least get most trucks far enough to get to somewhere safe to stop rather than the middle of the road.
    The other thing that stops them here is the Eastern European trucks that are 4x2s, most Norwegian artics are a 6x2 with lifting tag axle, so if it's bad weather, they simply lift the tag axle (knowing the roads authorities will overlook the temporary axle overload) which gets them further before they need chains.

    It really does annoy me how many wankers have no clue how to drive in the snow and half the time have no real reason to be on the road. They could work from home or get their hair done another day.
    I got stuck behind some knob the other day crawling around a roundabout at 5mph and then got stuck trying to get up the hill and blocked the road and got me stuck behind him. Luckily i actually have snow chains and put them on and managed to turn around and go back and got to work another way.

  • @johnmcquay82
    @johnmcquay82 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had several people take the piss out of me for having an emergency bag in the car during the winter months. I tend to keep packet soups, noodles and those sorts of things with me, along with a flask of boiled water and a sleeping bag. If I'm going any distance I add a gas stove to that and a large container of water. It's come in handy a couple of times; got stuck heading back from Holyhead a couple of years ago, so I camped for the night in the car...norra problem. :)

    I had a Southampton to Stansted drive to do Friday, so Thursday night I went to check the car out and see driving conditions. By 2100 Soton city centre was as clear as I’d ever seen it, but then I made a poor choice and pulled onto Millbrook Road West, which was completely clear until half a mile further when I guess I got the end of what you were stuck in, took me half an hour to go 200m before I could do a U turn and go back! So annoying! Up the M3 was absolutely fine and empty by Friday afternoon, M25 was slushy and freezing rain but not bad.

    • @KevTee
      @KevTee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      In those countries winter tyres either studded or studless are mandatory in winter or certainly if you block the road because you didn't have them on you will get fined. A lot of countries also mandate snow chains be carried at all times in winter. Among other things. People also know how to drive in it. Unlike a lot of the knobs here who will go out in their RWD BMW with summer tyres and then get stuck or end up on the roof.

    Just put them on full speed to (hopefully) throw some of that snow off, and when that doesn't work you should stop and clear them. Then put them on full speed from time to time to avoid the problem as much as possible.

    Hate to say it Kev, but for me this was your best video yet!!! Great choice of music, and great footage! I know a few people have commented already, and please don't take my comment the wrong way, but reading other vloggers comments.... you can 'get away with' poor video, but, you cannot get away with poor audio. If you want the channel to really grow, that really has to be addressed mate. Congratulations on the Volvo FH...she looks virtually new !!! A bit different to that rented 'pile of poo' you were driving before eh? Looking forward to the up and coming video's !! Stay safe mate.

      Thanks for the feedback Paul, I know the audio is holding the channel back and it's something I'm working on sorting as soon as I can, I just wish it was an easy fix without spending a shed load more money 😔 Yes the new truck is a whole world away from what I'm use to driving 👌 take it easy mate.

    Hi mate great to see your new job is going off to flying/sticky start :-) so is this a direct job your with? I do like a Volvo truck. Personally I think they are best but that’s just me. Is that a little truck snobbery I hear about the class 2 work hahaha! When I finally move house I might save & give class 1 I go. But we’re see :-) Great video. Oh one more thing. That’s my hat your wearing! I’ve that one from trespass. Never without it in the winter months

      We have good taste in hats mate 👌 it is a direct job, I'm employed by Burdens. I do really like Volvo's to, so we'll made. No truck snobbery mate, just prefer class 1, hats off to you guys that drive them permanently, I just find class 1 much easier 👍

    Great vlog kev 👍
    What was your start and finish time that day and how many working time and driving breaks did you need to make it back to the yard?
    Could you explain on next vlog

    • @KevTee
      @KevTee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi mate, I started at 06:00 and finished at 04:30, I didn't exceed my driving time and took regular breaks/sleep to ensure I wasn't tired. I exceeded maximum working time of 15 hours and 9 hours rest in a 24 hour period from start of shift but this was unavoidable. There are allowances for exceeding drivers hours and extreme weather conditions are one of them, otherwise you would be more of a hindrance blocking access routes for emergency services and snow ploughs.

  • @mrblue193

    When drivers get stranded somewhere how does that effect your driving times?

    • @KevTee
      @KevTee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Drivers hours can be exceeded in extreme weather so you are able to get to a safe place without you blocking the roads preventing vital services and ploughs from clearing the roads.

    I like your new ride. Volvo (hp ?), is that your permanent tractor unit or will you swap around a bit ?. The driving you did was great.
    I think, had there been less road users, you'd have probably kept going, seemed very confident. Still, 'variety is the spice of life'.
    Great video. Loved the ending, great snowman. ;)

    • @KevTee
      @KevTee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Chris, yes the Volvo is my permanent unit I've been allocated, I'll have to get back to on the hp though. Your right, my only issue was the other traffic, bit you can't expect everyone to have the same level of confidence in the snow.

    • @chrisb718
      @chrisb718 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true regards the 'confidence in snow' comment you made.
      Its nice that the Volvo is your permanent tractor, you can deck it out inside just how you want it. Takes time, I know.

    A general question, please. For most of my car-driving life (nearly 50 years), lorry drivers would flash their headlights when it was safe for an overtaking vehicle to pull back left into lane. This rarely happens now, if ever. Any thoughts?

    • @KevTee
      @KevTee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I still get flashed in by 90% of truck drivers, the ones that don't I put down to the influx of foreign drivers that are not aware of our customs.

    Hi Kev, great video, I’ve just come across your videos and I have to say, they are the best trucking vids on TH-cam, I love the speed up sections and the background music. I love listening to you too but your speech is a little muffled, I don’t know what kit you use but a bit of microphone update would be great if you can find a way round. Until then, drive safe and keep up the great work. Cheers, Jon.

  • @kenboon1478
    @kenboon1478 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I can only imagine the difficulty trying to control a HGV on icy roads , driving a 7.5 ton for a living is difficult enough in snowy/icy conditions .Companies should not allow a HGV on the road in certain conditions putting the driver and other road users at risk !

      ken boon hi ho silver! If you parked the haulage companies up in the UK because of weather I don’t think it would be long before the shelves would be empty, I remember when I was driving in the 2000s, The university of the west of England did a study on feeding the UK and it was said that people would be staving within a working week if the wagons stopped running..
      That was nearly 20 years ago, our little island’s population has grown some what since then!!!

    • @MrSabretooth19
      @MrSabretooth19 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you do a print out and write on the back what happened, then sign and date it.

      if you have day cab keep going till you get home.
