I used to walk 27 miles to school in 9 feet of snow at temperatures of -60f with a wind chill of -90f barefooted. We were a hardy bunch but for some odd reason very few of us made it past the age of 10. Some blame the harsh summer weather where temperatures would reach +200f.

It was the winter 1962/63 snowed and snowed then froze and remained so for about three months. I moved from Southport Lancs to Brixton London in January ‘63 and the same piles of snow were still there in March and boy was it cold.
I remember as a kid hoping it would get to -35° so the schools would close and then we could have a play day tobogganing and skating. That amount of snow is great fun but you need more to build good forts.

Unfortunately I wasn't around 40 odd years ago so in my life time id say this has easily been the worst I can remember. Living up here in Allendale we are used to the weather, its when you see news reports about a light dusting down south that gets me.
Some parts of the uk were hit pretty bad , am in the south east of England and my town got 25-30 cm in 8-11 hours which isn’t so common. It had last happened in 2010 .
I was lying on a beach in Valencia, Spain when this happened called work and took an extra week off and went to Benidorm. The thought of trying to get from Glasgow Airport home to Ullapool gave me the shivers.
At least in the northern US and Canada, we have the equipment to deal with storms like this. Things might get cancelled for a day but most roads are cleared and passable within 24 hours.

In coastal Connecticut 2018 was also a cold winter. We got 35 cm of snow from one storm and a few days later the temperature dropped to -20C. For over 2 weeks straight the temperature stayed below 0C.

The reason is health and safety but the real reason is law suits because we have a compensation culture that we didn't have then, people sure companies for simply tripping over something, so everyone has to be extra careful for those reasons.
This sort of weather used to be the norm even down here in Kent. The council used to put snow fences along the sides of main roads at the start of winter to stop snow causing drifts to block the roads and some roads and railways would be closed for ages due to drifts of 10 feet or more and villages had to have supplies helicoptered in (yes really). I don’t recall school ever being closed due to the weather though ! Perhaps there is something in this global warming rumour.

It's a novelty for most of the UK. We have snow every year but the momorable ones are etched in our brains. 2009/10 was a good one 2018 but 1963 and 1946/47 were phenomenal, I believe.
this was a terrible time for the british as many died, there were many casualties, and the economy of the uk dropped majorly, I only liked this as I could sled down insane hills and get airtime on a sled, the last time this happened was in 1963. But this wasn’t as bad a then.
i remember going for bushcraft walk with my mate, and we decided to camp in the woods for the night and it got to about 10 o clock amd we were getting really cold even though it was about 7 degrees at day time. Anyway so we probably about 13 miles away from home in a forest where we built our shelter and we decided due to the cold we would start heading home instead of risking the night, that didnt happen tho bcs we immediately got lost so we found our way back to the shelter and we had to buila a fire to keep warm. and then it came. Wind so strong it blew our fire out of commission and destroyed out shelter. we left the woods to try and get home and when we got out the snow must have been 3 feet deep (we were about 600ft above sea level) and we battled through the wind and snow for 10 hours just trying to head south towards my home and we finally got home after nearly dying😂
