For something as big as an S-Class, I'd say it's absolutely useful. It's technology that also tends to find its way into performance cars as well, but for that kind of thing I think its value is dubious.
Similar system to a front wheel drive vehicle, they have u-joints that can flex while still transmitting power from the engine. Hope this answers your question unless I misread that and you intended something else

Mercedes was actually the first with rear wheel steering. The 1938 Mercedes Gelandewagen had it.
