andrew malhotra AWD: gearbox sends power to front and back differential. 4X4 or 4WD: Gearbox sends power to a center differential which then goings to the front and back differential

Not weird if you think about it. 1. The video shows... 2. Then the "commercial for the sponsor" comes on. And that Sponsor add is pre recorded so they can use it over and over and over and over... well, you get the point. That's how most youtubers with self-made sponsor clips do. Easier i guess. (The commercial was made before the video, probably like 2-3 days before)
What's funny, sometimes OEM's get this wrong to give the consumer the illusion of off-road capability - particularly for crossover vehicles. Thumbs way up for this vid!!!
the big problem with all this and the reason it gets so confusing is that there are no legal or official definitions or requirements anywhere for what 4x4, 4wd, or awd actually mean. in fact, the sae recommends the use of the term awd to refer to all vehicles that have any sort of system that drives all four wheels, regardless of how that system works. because there are no official definitions and there are so many ways to make a system that drives all wheels the question should not be "what's the difference between awd and 4wd?" but rather "how does the awd system work on this particular vehicle, and what are its pros and cons in relation to the systems on other awd vehicles?". the sticker on the back of the vehicle is just marketing and tells you nothing about how the drivetrain actually works.
Perry2186 lol just spit my drink out ! As a grip guy, but growing up in Ontario Canada, I tend to agree somewhat that Asphalt doesn’t compare to loose surface racing. There’s a reason why Many professional drivers will tell the people that rally drivers are the best in the world.
Since full time 4WD is less common than part time, focus on part time 4WD. Part time 4WD is usually completely mechanical and almost always has a dual range transfer case. 2WD - transfer case isn't sending power to the front wheels, 4WD - transfer case is sending power to all wheels (depending on the surface and what the axle diffs are doing). Most conventional AWD systems are front wheel drive based and use a variety of center diffs and ways to control it. When traction is lost, the system will try to send power wherever it needs to go. Most of these FWD based AWD systems have a tough time sending a lot of torque to the rear wheels. Subaru actually has like four different AWD configurations. On my 2002 Outback with a manual transmission, all four wheels are always technically getting power. It has a limited slip center diff and limited slip rear diff. The center diff is called a viscous center diff, its actually filled with liquid silicon and friction plates (similar to a torque converter I suppose). When the plates start spinning at different rates, friction is generated and the silicon viscosity increases by a LOT, forcing the plates to spin at the same speed again. That's how my AWD system's center diff distributes power between the front and rear axle. I will always have about the same amount of power going to both axles when I need it, which is a huge advantage over the simple but ineffective FWD based AWD systems. Mine is purely mechanical, zero electronic parts to fail, and I am guaranteed max power to at least three wheels when needed.
There is no real difference, just marketing. Cars that use a permanent all wheel drive system are mostly labeled AWD, while cars with a non permanent system are badged 4WD or 4x4.
My Infiniti is AWD and the power distribution is 70% to the rear and 30% to the front. I believe that 4x4 is 50% to the front and back. Also as far as I understand, AWD cannot be turned on and off where 4x4 can be switched between 4x2 or 4x4. I am by no means a car guy but these are the things I’ve noticed from having both AWD and 4x4
Oh I get to nitpick something: the numbers (4x4, 4x2) don't denote the number wheels, they denote axle ends. After all, a dualie may still just be a 4x4 or 4x2, despite having six wheels. Great video nonetheless! I can learn a million times more than what I can find wrong in these videos after all!
Thank god this video exist so many noobs calling supercars 4x4 but most are AWD or Semi AWD like there’s a big difference between AWD systems like the M5 vs a 4X4 in a Land Rover

because there is no standard system to describe these things, in many asian markets, it is preferred that AWD cars are advertised as 4WD instead. Cars like WRXes and Evos are all advertised as 4WD in Japan.
I keep watching these videos and I keep thinking: 1. These are some interesting things to finally better understand, 2. Almost all of these things are being made redundant by electric vehicles, 3. I'm so surprised that fossil-fuelled vehicles don't break down more often, with so many mechanical components in them.
There wasnt much focus on the 2 speed transfer cases, including their 4low gearing. 4low can be found on both part time and full time transfer cases, with a reduction ratio between 2:1 to 4:1 from the factory. This is what seperates the true off road vehicles from the pavement oriented AWD cars/SUVs.
Easy way to keep them apart: AWD means all the wheels are given power from the transmission and transfer case, but they can all spin at different rates. 4WD locks all the tires rotation speed together. You can still get stuck with certain AWD systems, such as Toyota's, since they run an "open" transfer case, and power goes to the wheel with the least traction. Some cars, like Subarus, and GM AWD SUVs and vans are able to at least make sure you have power going to the wheel that has the grip.
I've been watching this for hours drawing diagrams trying to understand and I guarantee in a week ill forget lol btw made more sense watching the differential video first with the limited slip differential to understand the difference between full time four wheel drive and Subarus full time all wheel drive. Great video Bart!

Max Fisher simple, you press a button on the steering wheel that completes a circuit that sends a signal to the noise making devices that create sound waves with the electrical current surging through it
You close the circuit when you press on the steering wheel center. Technically its always on, you just ground the horn, allowing it to sound off. Its actually a very simple system, there was no need for manufacturers to make it complicated.
AWD vs 4WD - A label basically decided by the marketing team based on whether they think their target customer wants something tough and rugged or safe and 'high tech'.
I like my 2006 Tucson's 4WD... And I am aware it's nothing special at all. It's a FWD car that gives power to the rear wheels strictly when the front slips. A rwd usually gains better traction even though when you have a fr engine layout. This cause of weight transfer when accelerating. In snow for example you would prefer fwd as in that case your theory becomes true

I used to have an S4, it did great in the snow even with summer tires, but you're better of with winter tires for more grip on packed snow or icy conditions.
It came with studded snow tires (required where I live) and they seem to be in pretty good shape so I'm definitely looking forward to it! I'm no stranger to winter driving but performance driving courses sounds interesting.

These videos are amazing!!! Bart, your quips are hilarious!!! "unlike fulltime employees of Donut, they all have benefits" LOLOL i died. Keep it up Donut Team. Subbed!!!
As a mechanic in the military, this is what I tell people. They’re all synonymous. At the end of the day all wheels are being powered. You just get different terminologies depending on the functionality and application. 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) is pretty simple. Also known as a 4X4, it’s a vehicle that is by default 2-Wheel Drive but has the capability to power all 4 wheels by the operators choice through mechanical or electronic engagement. There are all sorts of different designs, but they all work the same generally. All-Wheel Drive is where you get the widest range of operation designs and functionality and they don’t all work the same. You have 3 main AWD systems. Full AWD, Bias AWD, and Part time (automatic) AWD. -Full AWD is when the vehicle powers all 4 wheels all the time with the same amount of power. -Bias AWD is similar to Full AWD as all the wheels are powered, but they’re not all powered the same. The vehicle usually has a bias towards the front or rear axle of the vehicle. This system is popular because it offers the traction benefits of a full AWD, but it’s more economical for fuel, wear, and tear. - Part time AWD (automatic) is by far the most popular system these days. Essentially, this is the same thing as a 4WD vehicle. The vehicle powers 2 wheels by default but has the capability to power all 4 wheels when required. These systems are completely automatic and require no input from the operator. They have a bunch of sensors and computers that monitor driving conditions and engages as required. These are by far the most complicated but best AWD systems as these systems are capable of powering different wheels at different speeds at the same time for just factions of a second. They’re perfect for people who don’t have a mechanical inclination or may not be familiar with certain driving conditions. Each manufacturer has its own name for it such as Fords Intelligent4WD, Volkswagens 4Motion, and Mercedes 4Matic. They all have a different design and complexity, but they all work relatively the same. But at the end of the day. They’re all doing the same thing. You just are going to piss off car people if you don’t call it the right thing. I don’t personally care. I get what somebody is saying no matter what they tell me.
Fwd cars dont necessarily have a better traction than rwd ones. The traction forces being applied below thé barycenter of the car, it creates a momentum that pushes front wheels up and rear wheels down, cause the rear wheels to have more grip, despite the engine weigh being on thé front.
So basically im watching these vids to help build a custom vehicle maintenance database for my workplace. Thanks donut. gonna make a detailed af database
Cars are a mystery to most people and not sure this video helps clear it up but some useful info if pay attention. I always go with 4x4 has a transfer case (and diffs) and is generally used in trucks/bigger SUVs. AWD uses differentials is usually used in cars/smaller SUVs. But of course Jeep Wrangler is smaller and is a 4x4...
This video helped me understand the difference better than others. Basically 4x4 is a locked center differential and AWD is an LSD in the center. I hope the cops don't hear about the latter being full of lsd

It came with studded snow tires (required where I live) and they seem to be in pretty good shape so I'm definitely looking forward to it! I'm no stranger to winter driving but performance driving courses sounds interesting.
Ha. X Drive is useless compared to Quattro and Subaru Symmetrical.
Space Boy I test drove a 4.2 Quattro Q7 it's fun. I ended up getting a Hemi 5.7 Jeep Commander instead, I regret that, it's a Chrysler, fucking thing constantly breaks down.
2:30 hey nice RWD labeled as an AWD
These videos are amazing!!! Bart, your quips are hilarious!!! "unlike fulltime employees of Donut, they all have benefits" LOLOL i died. Keep it up Donut Team. Subbed!!!
Hell yeah you guys never dissapoint this should really help me with my diesel mechanics class
Love that Science Garage intro sound. Literal eargasm

RWD: 4X2
FWD: 2X4
AWD: Rally Time
dude Fwd and Rwd both are 4x2 ... there no thing like 2x4
@@Niket99 you mean 2x4. There's nothing like 4x2.
@@frzburn You should google it. I'm mechanic and I know right
Up to Speed YUGOOOOO or LADAAAA
Lads has longer story
This channel is a school for me . I love it .
God I miss this dude!! Need more horse meat!
I Genisense a theme here
Fwd cars dont necessarily have a better traction than rwd ones. The traction forces being applied below thé barycenter of the car, it creates a momentum that pushes front wheels up and rear wheels down, cause the rear wheels to have more grip, despite the engine weigh being on thé front.
This is the height of Donut Media!
My 02 jeep grand cherokee can use full time 4 wheel drive on any road surface, including hard paved surfaces. That inter-axle design, baby
anyone else watching this for the 5th time?
on 2nd
Bart: Horse meat
Tongans: 👁👃🏾👁

*The writers for the intro were high*
So basically im watching these vids to help build a custom vehicle maintenance database for my workplace. Thanks donut. gonna make a detailed af database
Cars are a mystery to most people and not sure this video helps clear it up but some useful info if pay attention.
I always go with 4x4 has a transfer case (and diffs) and is generally used in trucks/bigger SUVs. AWD uses differentials is usually used in cars/smaller SUVs. But of course Jeep Wrangler is smaller and is a 4x4...
What happened this guy I miss his shows
Up to speed Chevy suburban
Forrest Hassell yes!
Why is he YELLING AT ME!!!!!!!!
i know right? he's so annoying
I miss this guy at donut
Bring this guy back!
lol, it looks like this guy was forced to sound enthusiastic.
Yeah. I totally agree. Looks too forced if you ask me.
And the fun part is not there. Not even a hint of funny either. :S
Is that you john cena?
So if its called 4x4...
4 times 4 = 16
16 wheel drive XD
I love how no one has every pointed out the fake hood vent made outa sheet metal over the cabinets haha science Garage is the shit
This video helped me understand the difference better than others. Basically 4x4 is a locked center differential and AWD is an LSD in the center. I hope the cops don't hear about the latter being full of lsd
