    Ha ha ha ha, I finally understand how this mechanism works. I always wondered how the power assist knew when to stop, ie how to prevent pressure assist from steering beyond where the driver wants to go. It's all about that little torsion bar. As soon as the steering wheel is released, the torsion bar springs the holes back to a neutral position so no more pressure goes to the side you're turning towards. Genius.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's so intricate yet simple on how that little torsion bar does its job!

    • @juvenildr
      @juvenildr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes torsion bar backs to neutral position but how it is turned when moving? is there a clutch like system ? if released how the gripping is over? i understand the mechanism but i wonder the details.

    • @Jamie-cz2xu
      @Jamie-cz2xu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@juvenildr it puts pressure on the side of the steering that you want to turn it, it wont turn the rack by itself, it just puts pressure there to help you turn the steering easier.

And there are no leak on the rack at all.

      @@speedkar99 Hi thanks for reply weve dropped the subframe on our old golf mk2 once again had the rack off once more today the outer valve assy locates with a locating pin the inner assy with the tortion bar can be fitted in 180 so 2 ways so we took it out and put it back 180 and the large port holes on inner and out lined up before they did not putting it back one subframe bolt cross threaded and the captive nut in the chassis has come loose URGH anyway fitted the hydraulicks back and did a test now worse than before like its working against us so we had it right the first time but it wasnt working right but did do some assist so we are buggered now going for another new rack from a differnt supplier £180 down the drain live and learn

      Hi it seems we had it fitted correct the first time as it sort of worked badly you can press the pin out of the tortion bar and remove the inner assy thats how we changed over the splines shaft but cant understand why it wasnt working properly we set the rack central and fitted the valve assy it rotates as its fitted so cant alighn any holes to outer case housing but seeing they are in channels i dont think it has any bearing on alighnment as the switching is done via the internal valve sleeve with tortion bar attatched we tried both ways the original sort of worked when the interna lvalve holes did not alighn with the outer when we re fitted it this time we turned it 180 in the locating lugs and the large holes on inner and outer sleeves both alighned the small ones did not so we though ah weve fixed it reassembled and now worse than before its fighting us so weve given up on it for tonight ordered another rack But we would like to know why our original was just leaking badly from rod ends but still worked ok this new one never has .... it seems a simple device but we are stumped we will look at it next time its off and try test it with an air line to see if the ports work properly but with only 2 options and weve tried both im stuck for now

      Update got another new rack and this time once again the splines on the steer column valve assy shaft are diff again this time its 18mm dia and 22 splines it seems there are 3 diff sets of splines for this rack type and the dia can be diff so this time we managed to get a rare second hand flexi to column shaft with 22 splines so we will change that over this time and not touch the rack in any way EVER the trouble is they dont say on the car parts sites what spline type they have they all fit similar car but not the short flexi shaft to steering .... job stalled now till post kicks back in after christmas HO HO HO once its off again ill look at the bad one again its bugging me why its not working properly i should be able to test it with an air line and see if ports work ok but thats a job for after the holidays now

    Good video, I was surprised from this shown system I was thinking it is simple. I have a question I have Saab 9-5 2008 model now when I turned its driving wheel to the left or to the right I hear a "tik tik" sound and disappear if I drive straight, I checked the components of my car wheels and change some of its parts, but the sound didn't disappear. I some how sure it's come from it's power steering system. Can someone give me what a problems in the steering system causing that, I will appreciate any reply to my problem, thanks.

    More informative in the first 2 min. than the 8 videos I watched before this combined. Answered everything I wanted to know. Thanks Mr. Speedkar- you, your wife, and your brother's stolen underwear are legends

    So how do I lighten my rack ? Change the control valve for a bigger one to let more fluid around?

    GREAT video, BUT we don't care to hear about this person's pants or that person's underwear. Also turn down angle grinder volume. Aside from that : GREAT VIDEO !!! Thanks for the deep dive into all those details. I never had a clue how hydraulic power Steering worked until I watched your video. Now I know.
