Outstanding video brother, much appreciated. Will be adding the mod to my Glock 34, Gen 3. All you need to do now is seal it with Krylon, Short Cuts, clear gloss. It comes in a 3oz can and can purchased at a hobby/craft paint store, i.e. Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.. The Krylon with 'top-seal' the silicon carbide and prevent the granular pieces from coming off in your hand. Again, outstanding video. Thanks for sharing.

I did same then painted it with car bumper and trim paint. Then said screw it and used truck bed liner spray and man together it's awesome. Even sprayed mags and it's great stuff. Dupli Color is what I used
Good video. On the punch pin holes for the backstrap, there's really no need to worry about that. The backstrap is epoxied in place now so that roll pin isn't functional anymore anyway.
I could get the backstrap off of I needed to. I could score along the edges and pop it up. Wanted to keep the punch pins accessible just in case. Doubt I’ll ever take it off though
I have grip tape, but on the frame where my thumb goes, I need something that will stay, and I plan on doing this rather than getting a gas pedal. This is needed because I have to keep replacing the tape where my thumb goes.

@@maxtheroofer8004 the context was the damage a soldering iron does to a plastic frame versus the addition of epoxy with rough media mixed in. The abrasive media will wear off over time and the epoxy on the frame remaining will strengthen rather than weaken the plastic. Epoxy can also be softened by solvents to aid in removal.
@@gregjones580 I think semi-permanent would be a better description. Additionally there are a significant number of people who have had their grips textured and not had to cause them problems. Some of the best shooters out there have been doing it for ages.
Informative and nice video, I just don't see why people don't use talon grips instead of something like this. They're not expensive, they stay on for a few years as long as you applied them correctly you don't even have to lightly sand the polymer, and they just work. I understand not all guns have that option but lots of the bigger brands do.
I’ve used Talons and they don’t last for me. I’ve got a Glock that was prepped and cleaned with a Talon on it and it’s falling off. I prefer this as well as the grit is customizable. If Talons work for you great!
I've used Talon tape on serveral guns and i like it. However, Talon tape isn't available for every gun/grip. Also, Talon no longer makes a tape for each grip size within a model family. Instead, they ship you a tape for the full size and provide marks for trimming. This places the burden of trimming the tape to accomodate smaller size frames fully on the user, but the price of the tape hasn't changed. Follwoing the method in the video, you can detail the grip the way YOU want it. Such as using a fine grit on the backstrap and a mix of fine and medium on the front strap.
@@vanniek71 I have some talon grip tape on my Reptilia grip for my rifle, and on the sides of a mouse I use at my computer. Both have relatively slick plastic, especially the mouse, and it holds super well. I am curious if the reason they are holding is because the tape is allowed to have full adhesion on the flat surfaces vs what you get with pistol grips which have a bunch of uneven surfaces that the grip tape has to contend with. Silicon carbide does seem to be a nice alternative to a custom stipple job though. It does apparently need to be touched up eventually, I saw competitor who mentioned that her grip needed a touch up because it was looking pretty rough after a lot of use.
@@Osprey1994 Could be better surface areas, but also when I grip a pistol I am gripping it as hard as I can to mitigate the recoil... I think the other applications you use Talons on don't get those kinds of force on them daily.
Hmm not really sure about that to be honest. I’d venture to guess it might add a little since you are adding a layer of epoxy over the grip. It does enlarge the grip slightly too. Might be interesting to try to figure out how to test that…. Good question!
@@vanniek71 Yes! I may try that on my G21. But honestly the way you have yours setup with the blue trigger and mag release that silicon carbide makes it even better. I think I'm going to get a canik after all I'm wanting to get into competion shooting soon. And what better to start with than an affordable gun like a Canik.
@@vanniek71 It's cool, just bustin' yet chops. :) So I was wondering if you've ever tried a secondary operation of thinning the epoxy and spraying it lightly as a topcoat over the carbide grit? It would serve to further bond it to the gun, would reduce the initial "bite" a bit, and should help it last longer, while resisting wear. I've done something similar in a different application and it worked well. Just a thought for v2.0. ;)

@@vanniek71 You can spray the thinned epoxy with a cheap squirt bottle from the Dollar Store. You have to get it fairly thin to be the right viscosity for the coating anyway, and that makes it sprayable. It kills the mechanism in some cheap spray bottles (due to the solvent), but since you only need it to work for about a minute, that isn't an issue if you time it right. :) If you patent and market this process, I want royalties! lol
The pieces stop falling off, I shot my first match with these guns this past Sunday and all the loose pieces are gone. As far as cutting you, its a preference thing. In competition shooting I want my gun to "stick" to my hands and not move, this process definitely helps with that!

Why not just buy granulated talon grips....? 😂 Cheaper and easier. I do hear a lot of people complain saying that their talon grips don't stay on though, but I have used a dozen different ones and over the past 6 years they're all good. Most people don't read the instructions though and don't heat it up with hair dryer or heat gun like your supposed too. To each their own! I still watched it all! And enjoyed it

Talons wear out (at least mine did about once a month) Silicon Carbide lasts forever. So in the long run it’s actually cheaper. Also with Talons you can’t select your grit aggressiveness, with my kits you can :) But to each their own, nothing wrong with Talons and they work great for a lot of people. Do what works for you!
I use Talons on may pistols nnd have them on my EDC, I use the granulated rubber. I find the carbide just right for my Canik Rival for USPSA Limited Optic division.
Any ideas if I can do a silicon carbide over a previously stippled frame? The first gun I had stippled was more of a fun project but the stipple was more of looks than function. Now I’m ready to have a good functioning grip

You could, but then you risk creating indents in the grip. I’ve found it’s better to dust it, let it sit and “wet” out and then redust over and over until it doesn’t wet out. Then once cured (overnight/24 hours) brush the grip and some particles will fall off, but you get the best overall performance and finish
I’ve tried the tapes and Talons. They don’t work for me. Either they end up coming off or the grip isn’t the right texture etc. I prefer this method. While it may not be for everyone it works great for me!

It all depends on what grit you use and how much you shoot. I've heard of people shooting 50,000 rounds a year re-doing them every year or every other year and some guys that shoot 3-5k rounds a year are on their 5-6th year and cant tell the difference in the grit texture. Unfortunately there is no Hard answer. I can say the grips in the video are still going strong without any wear showing. I do brush them to remove the grip enhancer build up that I use but other than that they are GTG
If you decide you hate it after awhile what can we do to get rid of it? I assume we'd have too sand/scrape it off and take a Dremel too it then stipple after? Just curious if you have ever tried removing it
Which texture is the closest to the feel of the M&P 2.0? Could you mix the silicon carbide in the epoxy itself before applying to coat all the grit better so it doesn't cut you and helps keepnit from breaking off from handling?
Not sure on the M&P 2.0 haven’t played around with one. You could mix the grit and paint it all on if you want to, but it works best if the epoxy is under the grit. As far as it falling off, after the initial shed of loose particles not much comes off.
@vanniek71 I don't want my hands getting micro slices in them so I was thinking that having the grit entirely coated in the epoxy would keep the sharpness from cutting my hands. Otherwise I guess i could spray some type of clearcoat over it after applying and initial curing.
That’s actually in testing now! Issue is you can’t just paint it and carbide doesn’t like to play well with others, but I’m working on a few things. Stay tuned and if it works well I’ll have a video on it

@@vanniek71 I'll be using the same grit as you, 46/70 and I also ordered the same epoxy you used. It's going a canik sfx rival. I'm leaving on the mag well extender also.
The epoxy will coat metal too! Although with a 1911 you may want to take the grip panels off and just apply the carbide to those and then reinstall them. But you can do the whole grip too if that’s what you want to do (Make sure your grip safety still works)
@@vanniek71 will the step below catch on shirts ? Not worried about my hands. I stipple bc talon grip sand paper fs my clothes up. I want aggressive as possible while being able to clear garments w/out it sticking to them.
@@Edc-Guy120/220 is not very aggressive. If it will catch on clothes etc I cannot say 100%, the grit itself no, but depending on body type, it may cause the grit to contact more of your clothing. Unfortunately there isn’t a definite answer. I carry 46/70 on one of my edc’s and it’s fine, but I wouldn’t suggest that for everyone
I’d call it semi permanent. If you need to “clean” it off you can scrape it off as best you can and reapply. But it’s never going to go back to factory once you do it.
@@vanniek71 Thank you! I was pretty sure it couldn't be returned to factory, but I'd rather not make the grip fatter and fatter as I re-apply more epoxy and SC. How long does it seem to last? I'm a competition shooter, and I shoot high volume. But I've had the same grip tape on my 2011 for several season and it still grips fine. What do you think of the guy who suggested sealing the result with Krylon? It seems to me it would take some of the aggression out of the grip.
@@puddintame6310 I’m a competitive shooter as well which is why I even went down this path. So far a bunch of dry fire and a match in I haven’t felt any change. I’d guess it will last more than a few years before it’s noticeable. The krypton route…. I’m sure it would knock down the texture a bit, but I don’t think it’s really necessary right now, once the little bit of initial grit comes off, it’s stopped completely.
For me, because I was replacing Talons all the time and couldn’t find an aggressive enough version. If you like Talons and they work for you that’s great. If not, this is a choose your own adventure alternative that way outlast Talons.
It all depends on what you want. I can’t say for certain 80 grit is ok for you……If you aren’t sure order a few grits, get a wooden dowel and apply them to small sections and see which feels best.

Holds up great, and there is a little that comes off in the beginning, but after a bit it stops. Great thing about carbide is it’s used a lot for polishing rocks, and our hands are a lot softer than that so it lasts!
@@vanniek71 That’s awesome man. Was asking as far as trying to gauge how well the silicon carbide holds up- thats impressive. I dry fire a lot and I know normally grip tape and even stippling can wear down over time which was one of my concerns with the silicon carbide. Does skin collect in it like stippling? If so, can it be scrubbed out without wearing out the material?
@@Jon-Hamersky-Shooting Skin, grip enhancer dirt etc all collect in it, I just run my mag brush over it every once in a while to clean it out. I’m not saying it won’t ever wear down, but I can say it’s been on these guns for a year or so now and there isn’t much difference than day 1

Yep you can. I got tired of grip tape failing and this is a competition gun. I don’t want to reverse it, so this obviously makes sense for my use. Like everything else it’s a choice right? Choose what’s best for your application!

I mixed 36 grit with 60/90 and that texture is amazing. Used 1 part 36 to 2 parts 60/90.
That's a whole new level of cool. I think it's better than tape or stippling.

All you have to do is put the frame in boiling water for a couple minutes and you can very easily peal all the epoxy off.

Why not just go with Talon Grips or Skateboard Grip Tape so it isn’t permanent? It would basically be the same end result, correct?
I’ve tried the tapes and Talons. They don’t work for me. Either they end up coming off or the grip isn’t the right texture etc. I prefer this method. While it may not be for everyone it works great for me!

How many ozs are being added to the gun..I get in say 3 gun heavier guns can be plus but just wonder about say carry guns ..looks amazing though
All depends on the grit and amount of epoxy, and I’ve never actually weighed it but I’d say under 2oz.

@@johnviera3884 they’re all pretty thin. I just use standard skateboard tape. Works perfect for me and I really like the super aggressive feel
How long does something like this last before you would need to reapply?
It all depends on what grit you use and how much you shoot. I've heard of people shooting 50,000 rounds a year re-doing them every year or every other year and some guys that shoot 3-5k rounds a year are on their 5-6th year and cant tell the difference in the grit texture. Unfortunately there is no Hard answer. I can say the grips in the video are still going strong without any wear showing. I do brush them to remove the grip enhancer build up that I use but other than that they are GTG

Which texture is the closest to the feel of the M&P 2.0? Could you mix the silicon carbide in the epoxy itself before applying to coat all the grit better so it doesn't cut you and helps keepnit from breaking off from handling?
Not sure on the M&P 2.0 haven’t played around with one. You could mix the grit and paint it all on if you want to, but it works best if the epoxy is under the grit. As far as it falling off, after the initial shed of loose particles not much comes off.
@vanniek71 I don't want my hands getting micro slices in them so I was thinking that having the grit entirely coated in the epoxy would keep the sharpness from cutting my hands. Otherwise I guess i could spray some type of clearcoat over it after applying and initial curing.
@@Watchdog_McCoy_5.7x28 matte clear coat would work as well. But I like the most aggressive grit and don’t want to dull it at all.
Is there any way to add color to the grit? Maybe mix something in to provide some color?
That’s actually in testing now! Issue is you can’t just paint it and carbide doesn’t like to play well with others, but I’m working on a few things. Stay tuned and if it works well I’ll have a video on it

How much thickness does it add to the grip?
Depends on what grit you are adding and how thick you lay on the epoxy but maybe 1/16th”? 1/8th if you go really heavy.

Will this work on a 1911 or does it have to be that polymer/plastic material?
The epoxy will coat metal too! Although with a 1911 you may want to take the grip panels off and just apply the carbide to those and then reinstall them. But you can do the whole grip too if that’s what you want to do (Make sure your grip safety still works)

120/220 grit has been the most popular for that.
@@vanniek71 will the step below catch on shirts ? Not worried about my hands. I stipple bc talon grip sand paper fs my clothes up. I want aggressive as possible while being able to clear garments w/out it sticking to them.
@@Edc-Guy120/220 is not very aggressive. If it will catch on clothes etc I cannot say 100%, the grit itself no, but depending on body type, it may cause the grit to contact more of your clothing. Unfortunately there isn’t a definite answer. I carry 46/70 on one of my edc’s and it’s fine, but I wouldn’t suggest that for everyone

Someone said this is "non-permanent." How long will this last? Can the epoxy be cleaned off and re-applied?
I’d call it semi permanent. If you need to “clean” it off you can scrape it off as best you can and reapply. But it’s never going to go back to factory once you do it.
@@vanniek71 Thank you! I was pretty sure it couldn't be returned to factory, but I'd rather not make the grip fatter and fatter as I re-apply more epoxy and SC.
How long does it seem to last? I'm a competition shooter, and I shoot high volume. But I've had the same grip tape on my 2011 for several season and it still grips fine.
What do you think of the guy who suggested sealing the result with Krylon? It seems to me it would take some of the aggression out of the grip.
@@puddintame6310 I’m a competitive shooter as well which is why I even went down this path. So far a bunch of dry fire and a match in I haven’t felt any change. I’d guess it will last more than a few years before it’s noticeable. The krypton route…. I’m sure it would knock down the texture a bit, but I don’t think it’s really necessary right now, once the little bit of initial grit comes off, it’s stopped completely.

Idk why you would do this over talon grips
For me, because I was replacing Talons all the time and couldn’t find an aggressive enough version. If you like Talons and they work for you that’s great. If not, this is a choose your own adventure alternative that way outlast Talons.

Haven’t made it to that point yet, but after a few particles came off it’s stopped. Still going strong!

Nope, let it cure and then I like to use a brush on it to get any loose particles off and you are good to go
What does 40-70 grit? We have different measurement scale on grit, 60,70,80,120,400,600 etc... Is 80 grit ok?
It all depends on what you want. I can’t say for certain 80 grit is ok for you……If you aren’t sure order a few grits, get a wooden dowel and apply them to small sections and see which feels best.

Absolutely! The epoxy works with all kinds of materials - wood, metal, polymer, glass etc.

This gun 100% is not for carry. I’d use something way less aggressive if I was going to carry these.
How has this held up? Has it worn down or worn off at all?
Holds up great, and there is a little that comes off in the beginning, but after a bit it stops. Great thing about carbide is it’s used a lot for polishing rocks, and our hands are a lot softer than that so it lasts!

@@vanniek71 That’s awesome man. Was asking as far as trying to gauge how well the silicon carbide holds up- thats impressive. I dry fire a lot and I know normally grip tape and even stippling can wear down over time which was one of my concerns with the silicon carbide. Does skin collect in it like stippling? If so, can it be scrubbed out without wearing out the material?
@@Jon-Hamersky-Shooting Skin, grip enhancer dirt etc all collect in it, I just run my mag brush over it every once in a while to clean it out. I’m not saying it won’t ever wear down, but I can say it’s been on these guns for a year or so now and there isn’t much difference than day 1

Once the epoxy is cured you are going to be A OK. I’d caution against huffing it though while it isn’t cured, that’s bad mmkay

Yep you can. I got tired of grip tape failing and this is a competition gun. I don’t want to reverse it, so this obviously makes sense for my use.

I did same then painted it with car bumper and trim paint. Then said screw it and used truck bed liner spray and man together it's awesome. Even sprayed mags and it's great stuff. Dupli Color is what I used
