My dad was a member of the Batcave club, he's still got his membership card in his wallet! Its so nice to see people learn about this club, the stories my dad told me were fascinating and it really seemed like the place to be. Also yes, there was a lot of live music from bands but there was also a DJ sets in conjunction so it was a good mixture. A lot of popular Goth artists/groups would also just be there to mingle and not just for performance purposes, I believe Siouxsie was there the most according to my dad
I'm watching along a bit more as well and yeah, the Batcave was a good excuse to dress up according to my Dad as well.
He taught me that a lot of what Goths looked like back then in daily life was really a product of the 70s-80s, such as the larger (usually crimped) hair, a lot of Goths in their daily lives wore sequins, pearls, lighter coloured leggings, layered necklaces, dresses, really typical clothing of the time and there was a surprising amount of colour too. This was completely reflective of what you could see in the 70s-80s, not just among Goths but also the general public and people you'd see featured in magazines it would just be different colour palettes, some personal elements etc.
Younger Goths today seem to completely brush over the fact that most Goths back then were typically not dressed up in their Batcave attire and wearing Trad makeup everyday, they were just wearing regular 70s-80s clothes with their own twist on the colour palettes, some DIY elements to what was reflective of their personal style as a Goth. They'd sometimes wear a little bit of makeup or they'd be completely bare-faced, but having large hair was easy as it was very trendy and not too outlandish to wear in daily life at the time so you'd see that teased, crimped style often outside of the club scene.
But a lot of daily wear was based on what was trending in the 70s-80s, and the Batcave was people's excuse to go all out with their Trad makeup, their DIY outfits that REALLY expressed themselves whether that was their connection to the music, gender identity, sexuality and more. So it did often feel like to a lot of Batcavers, that the club was just a bit of a fashion show at times but it wasn't in a shallow way like you said, it was just an opportunity for most people to wear what they wanted when they otherwise probably couldn't in daily life (for examples their jobs, perhaps fear of judgement etc). It was also a safe place for said identities, sexualities and for people of any race as well, it was an important event for everyone who went and they treated it that way, it was their place to converge and to be with those alike.

I got into the scene in 1983 on the West coast of U.S. Everyone referred to us as "bat-cavers" & "death rockers", no one yet used the term goth. It was very, very common for parents to be against their teens expressing themselves in this way. Many kids would bring their clothes and makeup to school to avoid parental dismay! I remember visiting Skoochies in the summer of '83 in Seattle WA. and a huge number of kids would use the MacDonald's bathroom across the street to put on their clothes and makeup before making an appearance at the club. All of the coolest bat-cavers stayed in front of the club rather than going inside. Inside was mostly for new wave music and culture at that time. We all thrifted and made our own outfits and there was a huge amount of diversity and creativity and uniqueness to each person's appearance. It truly was an amazing and wonderful era! Also, I don't know what you two are drinking these days, but you both get more fetching with each video!

And, yes, I left school at 16, moved from home at 17 and had been working since 16. It was quite normal and we had the ability to go from one job to another quite easily. Same, came across this channel by accident. Early 80's and apparently I dressed like a goth to go clubbing - normal Fri/Sat night, had never heard of the term 'goth' back then. Moved across Australia when I was 16 & got a flat and a job. Can't see how anyone would rent a 16 y.o. a place these days! I now have a 27 y.o. who still lives at home :/ Everyone bags the 80's but there's some great stuff buried there...

in the early 80's there was massive unemployement in Britain and Ireland, young people leaving school usually were unemployed for at least a year or two. they could have made a feature about a pop disco at the time, and i guarantee the people interviewed in that club would have been unemployed too

I think I've mentioned this before, I've been in and skirting the Goth Scene since the late 1970's and into the 80's through to today. My "Uniform" back in the early 80's was a pair of Black Levi 505 jeans, a band T-Shirt and my leather bike jacket (the jacket was because in Summer I road a 1969 Honda CB 750 Four, which like an idiot I sold,...ugh.). Now there was definitely a group in the scene in Edmonton Alberta that where a lot more flamboyant and followed a band called "Darkroom". Most of the Friends I had then are still friends now and while some have grown out of the dress portion of the culture we have all never outgrown the music. So far as I'm concerned, so long as you dig the music, you're as Goth as I am. 🦇

Now I wear her wedding band on a leather necklace which I have only removed on a couple occasions so it didn't get lost.

I feel like the amount of unemployment and redundancy in the UK in the 80’s because of Margaret Thatcher spawned, a whole generation of creative people who basically wanted to find something to do to occupy themselves and the Gothic subculture must’ve been a real lifeline for them as it wasn’t that hard to get into these clubs as they were pretty cheap and you didn’t need to be rich to have an interesting DIY gothic aesthetic.

I’m not a goth. BUT I am proud to live in the city that birthed the goth subculture- Leeds UK. Specifically Le Phonographique club, the world’s FIRST goth club (sadly now closed) in the Merrion shopping centre. This tiny club (I once bumped into Sisters of Mercy’s Andrew Eldritch in here) had a pillar in the middle of the tiny dancefloor covered in tiny mirror tiles (everything was tiny, ok got it), and legend has it that goths danced the way they did because of the lack of space so would preen themselves in the mirror instead. This club was around BEFORE The Batcave and eventually closed in 2005. Wikipedia article here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Phonographique?wprov=sfti1#History

It's worth pointing out that the music that came out of the Batcave scene was quite specific, not necessarily related to the wider goth movement. Specimen, Alien Sex Fiend, Sex Gang Children, Sexbeat, were all quite camp and strongly influenced by glam rock. Their music and image were obviously different from scene leaders like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Cure. Also, from a book I read about Sisters of Mercy, there was some resentment in Leeds when the Batcave tour came to town, because Leeds had its own scene, which they felt was diluted when people started copying Southern trends. This is part of the reason Eldritch doesn't like being associated with the word "goth".

(In the Eighties, at 19 you wanted to be doing something.)
I turned 19 in the summer of '85, & I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was working (part time) in a fabric store and just having a good time. Those were great times though!

Every 'scene' has its gatekeepers. They're irrational people who aren't very bright and quite cowardly, needing an identity to exist. It's very tribal.

definitely agree with the statement of online communities taking Goth way too seriously! I recently went to a small Goth night that happens a few times a year in my city, and the expectations i had vs the reality of how nice everyone actually was and how carefree it felt to just be ourselves and enjoy the music was a very nice experience! it would have been amazing to experience The Bat Cave in all its glory *sigh*

A couple of notes here from someone who knows: 1 It was hard to get a career type job and keep an alt look in the early eighties. 2 A lot of kids were not encouraged to continue studying after leaving school and may have had no one in their family who had gone onto Uni. 3 You could claim unemployment benefit at 16 and actually survive on it (plus maybe a little cash in hand work).

In 1983 I was 21 and I took my first overseas trip from NY to Madrid, Paris, and London. During my week in London, I saw the Batcave from outside, but I didn't go in. I was with a friend and while we didn't have a set itinerary and we did go to a couple of other clubs, I'm not sure why we didn't go to The Batcave even though I know I wanted to go. I regret it now.

Love the 4 to the floor, 80's mixing. Very prime sound I could get lost in it for hours. Seeing clips of young fire brands changing the world, very cool. Wish I could go back for a day and just sit and talk to some of them about the views of youth at the time. So many questions.

Sadly, the Batcave was just edging before my time, that & I was in Canada. LOL I got into the Goth scene around 1989 & never actually heard of the Batcave until the mid-90's. Dang, I haven't seen a copy of Gothic Beauty in years! Didn't know they were still around! Cool beans! Awesome little magazine! I used to pick it up from a store a friend ran.

Unfortunately as someone who lives in a state where thrifting here is horrible. They genuinely have nothing here that’s looks good or anything to make things with. I’ve resorted to doing patch work for bands I like and putting that onto stuff. But unfortunately it’s hard to “diy” here. Everything for it is also pricey and my mom is kinda strict so yk

Love the discussion about how people don't really take it seriously out at the clubs. When I used to go to one of the best goth clubs I've seen (full time goth, not just a night) people would get annoyed at the frat boys who showed up early for the cheap drinks and made fun of the regulars but someone dressed the same way who was polite, got out there and danced, they were one of us, outfit be damned.

Got my free copy that I'll start reading shortly and what I remember of this magazine it was hard to find even in bigger cities. I live in the States and well, sometimes the bookstore clerks would look at you askance. Thinking this is going to be a good read based on what I've seen so far. Enough of my rambling on I'm going to hop over to stick my nose in my new (digital) magazine.

To be honest I didn't live threw the 80s but I did love threw the 90s and I gotta tell ya the 90s definitely was a interesting time back then I remember I had a girlfriend we didn't date but we were close friends and she had a Gothic style to her we didn't do alot together but I remember going threw this corn maze and it was fun after that we never saw each other again but I will never forget her and how she got me to see things a bit differently and that is never judging a book by it's cover that was definitely a memory to remember
