    Are you using the slotted floor as the roosts? Do you think they need more than that for roost or is that enough?

    • @hdezoo
      @hdezoo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they sleep on the slatted floor. It seems to work well. We made the steel walls long on the bottom so the floor is protected from the wind.

    how many laying hens can you hold in this egg mobile?

    • @hdezoo
      @hdezoo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It could probably hold 80 or so. We had 55 in it when we first built it and that works really well. Right now we have 35 or soon it, and will probably have more next year.

    Thanks for the inspiration! I saw that a reviewer (of the new Joel Salatin book) said there weren't any specific plans for smaller scale structures in his book. Not sure if that is true, but such a shame to use the word scalable in the title and not have the homesteader-sized versions of what they use (if that's true). Do you think if we were to build one similar to yours and do an A-frame top, it would hold up to Oklahoma wind? The Ridgedale egg mobile probably wouldn't work here...

      @hdezoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t know for certain what would work by you if you have consistent high winds. If you made this shelter as a 10x8 footprint, but with an a frame roof, it might create a wing-like shape, which could be a problem if the shelter is real light. You can always add weight to it if it’s vulnerable to high winds

    I remember your Live, where you said the hens would poop in the nesting boxes if you didn't block them off.
    Is that because they are the highest point, and they want to roost there?

    • @hdezoo
      @hdezoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure why they do it, but the nest boxes are the highest point in the shelter, yes. I put a bar along the front loosely to lock them out at night, then in the morning, they fly up and grab it and pull it down when they want to lay their eggs. I then put it back up when I collect eggs in the afternoon.

      @@hdezoo Thank you for explaining!
      I was always told the nesting boxes had to be lower than their roosting bar for the night, that's why I asked.
      Being descended from jungle fowl, apparently chickens prefer to roost off the floor, and as high as possible, to avoid being eaten by some predator while they slept.
      Obviously that's easy to accommodate in a coop, but not in a mobile tractor like yours.
      Love how you refined the design, and added the mesh floor to the nesting boxes.
      No more wet, stinky, broken eggs.

    How many acres do you have?

    • @hdezoo
      @hdezoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We don’t own any land. The pasture we have chickens in is owned by my dad. We use to have heifers there, but we don’t anymore, so it wasn’t being used. We have someplace to run chickens and improve the property, and my dad sees his field get greener and more orderly. The field is about 2 acres or so.
