I worked with a coach last year, when talking about my goals I told him I wanted to be my high school weight again. He said, "I want you to consider that you actually may not want that. Yes you may have put on some weight but not all of that is un necessary. In high school you were a child, you're a woman now. It is completely normal and healthy that your body has changed. Let's not think about getting back to that, let's think about what's the best for you now, as a woman." Completley changed my life, erased so much guilt and shame for me.

Wow. Hats off to that trainer. There are many trainers who would likely just hype you up for that goal in order to promote themselves as the person who would get you there, when in reality it’s not healthy or feasible.

Love this!! Wow. I am 5’10” and a quite fit and healthy 170-180 pounds. When I was in high school, I was an incredibly thin 130 pounds. I look like a toothpick and actually hated how thin I was. Over the next 10 years, though, I gained over 80 pounds, mostly due to emotional eating. I have found such a sweet spot for myself now, but sometimes I still feel guilty that I am 40 to 50 pounds heavier than my high school weight. I have to remind myself that it was not a weight that I was even happy to be out! I am feed girls who had curves and I felt just like a tall, bony toothpick. I love this trainer normalizing not making that a goal, because we were completely different people then and not even finished growing. Thank you so much for sharing that.

I'm surprised that Jaclyn doesn't hire a personal chef/dietitian/trainer to help her through her weight loss journey. Give her a schedule with delicious pre-made meals/snacks loaded up in her fridge. Make sure it's food that she finds tasty and fulfilling. Throw in some therapy and there you have it. Hopefully she's not just doing this for the clicks.

There was someone I used to follow in IG who documented her weight loss journey (she was obese and wanted to get to a healthy size and develop healthy habits), and one thing she talked about often were NSVs, or Non-Scale Victories. Idk where she got it from or if she came up with it, but she loved to keep track of both the numbers and the NSVs to help keep her motivated to continue developing better lifestyle habits. Often times when she would get discouraged about the numbers or plateau, there would be a non-scale victory that she hadn't noticed before (doing more reps, mastering a new exercise, increasing weights, dropping a clothing size, having more energy, etc). I hope Jaclyn is able to switch her mindset and start recognizing that it's not always about the scale.

And it’s sooo triggering as a life-long fat person, having been on diets since age 9. This diet is what everyone in my life encouraged me to do growing up. Eating few calories, all protein and veg, forcing yourself to workout when you’re feeling badly is the image of health, or at least it was my idea of being healthy all through my adolescence and young adulthood. When you're in your 30's (like Abbey & I), you come to accept that you'll never been skinny like you were in your teens and early 20s, but you understand that looking good and feeling good (being healthy) are equally as important, and so you play the long game 😊

When I got to that point I hoped for 180. I'm absolutely shocked that I weigh 160lbs and have for a little over a year now. I am 5 lbs heavier than when I was doing weight lifting 5 days a week and eating a completely clean diet; no processed foods were allowed in the house after my grandma had gastric bypass surgery. If that's not proof that you can have your cake and eat it too (literally) than I don't know what is

Psychologist here. In terms of your comments about the 60 days being arbitrary - goals are more successful when a clear timeframe is set. Yes, she should continue to engage in healthy behaviors after that date, but setting an initial timeframe makes sense. It should be realistic though, and it sounds like what she wanted to achieve with that time was poorly defined.
There is also good evidence to support that you need to do something for 90 days to make a habit, so she should perhaps try for that instead.

So Abbey’s advice to make small adjustments that you can more easily sustain makes more sense.

As someone who has fought obesity my entire life (thanks, genetics), I can 100% understand the "lack of mobility" sentiment. I can attest to the fact that once you gain a lot of weight rapidly, your body truly does panic - it cannot bear the weight you've put on it. HOWEVER - it's important to recognize that it isn't just the weight itself. You can be "overweight" or a bigger person, and still move fine and be in good cardiovascular shape if you work out.

She's about 6 or 7 videos in to this process and it's really shifted. These vlogs really are her journey. She shows weeks where she goes too hard on the diet, weeks where "falls off the wagon", and weeks where she strikes a balance. She's been very open on her channel about how the weight gain is from alcohol abuse and depression and how that excess weight just reminds her of one of her darkest times and how she really just wants to let that all go. Her whole series really is a journey of learning how to be healthy and strip away/unpack the diet culture that society pushes as healthy, but also learning how to love and take care yourself both mentally and physically. I actually really appreciate her series because it directly mirrors a lot of my own experiences and it's so helpful to see someone working through that process the same way I am, especially when so many people just put out the pretty, polished version of their journey which can be SUPER discouraging.

They under-eat , create good/bad food lists, attempt to workout, fail bc their energy is too low, beat themselves up then stop. I also think it’s important that people work with the correct professionals to learn what is best for their body. I’m glad you pointed out that she is not eating enough. She would go so much further working with a registered dietitian.

I love that you are telling her to eat more food. It’s scary how people make decisions without being fully informed. I am someone with kidney disease and my needs are different than a lot of peoples and a nutritionists is usually the only person that gets that.

I totally agree with not putting a timeline. I realize every time I put a timeline, when I fall off the wagon, I get so beaten down and spiral and feel like giving up until I set a new timeline and cycle repeats. But without a timeline, when I fail one day and had overeaten, I just continue to keep healthy the next day or even later that same day, as if nothing happened the day before. This keeps me motivated and its something I can see myself doing forever, some days, I fail but don't look at it as failure, but more of "I had a moment there", just brush it off and keep it moving.

Not gonna lie, all of the reacts videos have been so helpful to me (I know you have a ton of information, but these are just the most engaging to my brain and I absorb more info like this!) I'm currently doing a mix of tracking food intake and exercise, but I've a) bumped up my calories and b) am letting myself have things if I feel hungry regardless of what the numbers say. And because of a mix of nutrient tracking and the (very very bare bones) of some intuitive eating, I'm starting to be able to connect how I feel with whether I've gotten enough of something in a day. Like if I got enough calories but am still starving, it's probably because I got almost no protein.
This is probably the most successful I've been at planned weight loss in a LONG time, because I'm still letting myself have everything I already had while learning to recognize hunger cues and satiety cues. And now I feel kind of ridiculous for all the times I tried to eat less than 1200 cals regularly because it was what I'm "supposed to do."
I've lost around 4lbs since October 5th (so between 1-2 lb/week recommendation) and don't feel like I'm starving constantly, or deprived, etc. Thanks for all you do

I feel like what Jaclyn is demonstrating is something like the five stages of dieting that everyone seems to go through (and what is learned/adapted in each stage determines success). There's the over-restrict/punishment stage, the over-exercise stage, the fad diet stage, the learning balance stage, and the realization that it's not a diet but a lifestyle. Maybe I'm wrong, but I know I've gone through all those, and Jaclyn's beginning is awfully familiar....

I never will never understand smoothies as a habit to drink. Just can’t wrap my head around it as sustained tool. Older folks use blended food when they have problems swallowing or to supplement low calorie intake. Or when not eating at all.

I may have a smoothie once or twice a week as breakfast. Mine always have a base of protein powder, almond milk (lactose intolerant), a banana and flaxseed or wheat germ. I then throw in whatever fruits and veggies I feel like having in there. I enjoy them and I'm not a big breakfast eater so this works for me and my smaller appetite in the morning. I don't get hungry and by the time I do it's lunch time anyway. So for some people it can work as a breakfast meal

Thank you for making this video! I was watching one of the episodes earlier and I couldn’t help but FEEL hungry just watching the “meals” she was having. I’ve been in a caloric deficit and working out and losing weight, but I rarely let myself feel hungry on purpose. I’ve also made gradual changes mixing home cooked whole foods and fast food, because that’s been my diet for SO long and if I restrict it completely, I know I WILL binge on it. I don’t see her lasting with this small amount of food or varieties of meals for very long. I hope she begins adding more varieties and letting herself have more foods, or else she’ll bounce right back to her old habits and likely binge very quickly. I also am not sure why she’s weighing herself every day, I did that for a few days and quickly got discouraged because weight fluctuates SO much, especially for women!! She should be weighing every week, preferably every 2 weeks if weight loss in itself is her goal. I think therapy would be a great addition at this point in her weight loss journey as well. No hate, I think she’s beautiful either way & I hope she starts prioritizing how she feels versus looks/weight

A legitimate question- how do people who eat less than the minimum requirement of calories for their height/weight/activity level actually survive?
My dietitian recently told me I need about 1400 calories minimum to breathe and pump blood and stuff, but it took me two months to go from eating roughly 600 a day to 1200 on average. How is my body still (kind of) functioning?
*Like scientifically I mean, not existentially

Hi there! Hopefully, Abbey responds to this so you can get the best info. I'm not a dietician, I am studying public health, but as far as I know, the body can survive for a little while even when not receiving enough calories, but there is a cost; metabolic processes will slow down A LOT because you need the macronutrients and micronutrients in foods to perform cellular metabolic processes. In other words, your body has been able to function by basically slowing processes down that would have normally been occurring with more frequency and faster. Over time, tissues and organs become extremely damaged from both the primary and secondary effects of nutritional deficiency, and that does cause death unfortunately :(
Glad to hear you found some support, and I wish you the best ❤❤❤

    • @SqueeMachine
      @SqueeMachine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm also not an expert but from what my doctor told me: your body is probably using up all its stores of nutrients to keep you going, this includes all your muscles and even organs like your heart! your body does keep some stores pf stuff like vitamins so it burns through those for a while to try and keep going. Bit it also shuts down whatever processes it can to conserve energy. It can be really tough to increase the amount of food you are eating, you're doing great!

Thank you Abbey for reviewing the first episode of this series! I think I'm speaking for everyone when I say that we'd terribly appreciate it if you reacted to the whole series. It's so disturbing that Jaclyn is getting so much praise for being "so real and relatable", while it's so harmful for everyone watching. I'd say the internet needs your input on this series.
I really wish Jaclyn would seek professional help for losing weight and feeling better.

U are so good at explaining this! I gained a lot of weight due to some health issues and i couldn’t get it off no matter how much u worked out. When I learned to look at food a totally different way, not a diet but a lifestyle, I got to my goal weight and have stayed there for over 2 years.

Thank you so much for talking about the whole tight clothing thing. It caused me to have a "light bulb moment" I've made some positive changes in the last year after a stroke. From those changes, I've gone down a couple of clothing sizes. I tried on some new to me clothing and it was actually one size too big, but I found myself wanting to stay in that size because I was worried that the next size down would be too clingy. I wasn't happy either way. Staying where I am would mean baggy clothes but the smaller size would feel clingy, but probably actually fit correctly. Having been morbidly obese for the last 48 years has really pounded into my brain that I have to hide behind loose clothes. I predict much contemplation in my future.

i think Jaclyn's series is what most people feel like. You mentioned that Jaclyn's diet of just chicken isn't sustainable. True. But I struggle so much and just finding a food that I *should* lose weight on is a win. My brain doesn't turn off. I'm constantly aware that I'm overweight, that i am wanting food that isn't healthy, that people are looking at me while I eat a cookie and wonder why the fat girl isn't having a salad. The mental health aspect is very hard to balance with the physical aspect of dieting for many people.
