Especially when behaviours can be shared between disorders, it's the mental aspect, and it's common for people to shift from one ed to another, especially in recovery. I hate when people always neglect bed bc as someone dx w bulimia, when for me the binging aspect has ruined my life more than anything other aspects, even when I was starving.

    I just want to say, I get her eating situation. I practiced an extreme eating disorder for decades just on the opposite side of the spectrum. I dealt with being in treatment and "recovery" off and on for 20 years.
    In the last two years I finally feel like something changed and I was actually able break up with "Ann" what I chose to name my disorder voice in my head. I have consistently been in and out of treatment my whole adult life. Fact of the matter was it didn't work until I was ready and I could be ready to actually go all the way and not just maintain.
    Binge eating is probably a bit harder to get better from because its not as respected as a disease and its associated with a lot of stigma if you have weight gain side effects from it. Heck, most people don't acknowledge it as an eating disorder.
    I feel for all people struggling with binge eating because they will never get the compassion I did which helped me maintain and seek treatment until I was mentally able to do the last steps.

      It's an eating disorder. You can't control an eating disorder, unless you decide to face it, but it's not easy, and it has psychological motives behind it. At least for me it's triggered by obsessive thoughts, depression and anxiety in general. I'd say I have an axious relationship with food, the more I try to follow a diet, the more I succed, the more I feel the urge to destroy everything I've achieved, and I do it, not only eating everything I want, but feeling the need to eat even if I don't want to. Basically it's like I'm constantly sabotaging myself. I've been anorexic for a brief period of my life with some health issues related to it and since I've decided to leave my unhealthy habits I've fallen in more unhealthy habits, like binging.
      I've read that trisha has bpd. With bpd it's enormously difficult to cope with extreme mood swings and negative thoughts, because you're super impulsive, it's very hard to control yourself. Not that you can't get better, but it's really hard and from what I see I think that she's trying her best to follow an healthy lifestyle, even if it doesn't seems like this.
      EDIT: Ok I've found out she has not bpd, but to me it seems like she has an eating disorder.

Even if you dont count calories, saying I have a party on friday so I will eat salads for dinner this week or veggies with meat, to help balance out my intake on friday. There are ways to use the principle without focusing on individual calories.

    One question though. Why do we (as a society) villainize people like Trisha and how her content triggers people but she is literally just out there doing her own thing, but think that people like Linda Sun are saints who are certainly more triggering for people who are in recovery or having an eating disorder. In her comments people are saying stuff like "See? The body is designed to move and work out!!", on her "Working out for 365 days" video. No, the body isn't designed to work out every day. We have evolved as a species. She doesn't have a healthy relationship with food either, so why are people like her so "amazing", but Trisha is so horrible?

    • @r.d.whitaker5787
      @r.d.whitaker5787 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The short answer to your question is that people are idiots. They see a thin person as healthy, regardless of what damage they are doing to themselves.
      They see a person who weighs slightly more as unhealthy, regardless of what they are eating or what sort of other lifestyle choices they make.
      Just part of our toxic culture.

    I have a soft spot for Trisha. She is trying her best and she has battled her mental health on a public stage and been the punching bag for youtube and other platforms for years. Some of this she has brought on herself but sometimes I think she overly scrutinized for everything she does. @Alice Cooke I think Abby chose to do this for the audience that watches Trisha- not Trisha herself. This video truly reads as a warning to potential audiences of Trisha’s content. It seems to me that’s what most of Abby’s videos focus on-warning and educating the audiences and not the TH-camr themselves. Because honestly, most of the youtubers are too far gone to take anyone’s advice. But in many cases, their audiences are not. TH-camrs hold a great deal of power and influence, and I think Abby realizes that and tries to help vulnerable audiences with her videos. Just my opinion- I don’t think her main goal is to start beef or anything- her main goal is to steer away audiences from possible triggering or unhealthy content

    • @riribeasley4741

    I think another important part of these "accepted rules" with disordered eating is also what you do after you have your "cheat meal." Like if you stop restricting for one day then feel like you HAVE to compulsively exercise and work off all of your calories by adding extra work outs or physical purging, that's still an unhealthy eating even though you ~allowed~ yourself to have that bigger meal.

    Abbey, thank you for constantly bringing to light and helping diminish the stigma around eating disorders. The way you and your colleague discuss EDs is probably the most accurate way I have seen here as you do not focus on the food but more on the coping and the driving force behind this terrible illness. As a person who’s gone through recovery and has experienced relapse, I appreciate your videos and knowing you keep it real and push for a safe space. Keep doing great things!
    Ps: have you ever considered doing a video on the stigma/judgment within the eating disorder realm itself? For example, as a person who’s ED was primarily restrictive, I found it very hard to empathize with people who were on the “opposite” side of the spectrum. It’s almost like there’s a competitiveness in the eating disorder world when you’re in the midst of disordered thoughts. This is a very loaded and vaguely written topic but I would love to see some discussion about this.

But what i wanted to say, is that when i loved Trisha i was at a place in life where i mentally couldnt eat due to being so down. But watching her eat and watching her enjoy it actually made me feel hungry for the first time in a long time. And i would eat while i watched her because it also made me not feel lonely while i ate. Some people, like me, need to lose weight- for a multitude of valid reasons. Our health and fitness journies look different (not to say that trish is a good example). We have to do some things in different orders and it just feels like she lumps everyone together in this one "listen to your body, eat intuitively" thing. Some of our bodies are literally lying to us on the daily. We have to build healthy habits with food (which technically requires SOME form of dieting to take place), but that's not always fun. It's frustrating because our bodies are used to things that don't give it what it need and it screams at us for the things it usually has whenever it wants. Like a toddler. So we have mental and physical addictions/coping going on.
    It almost feels like gaslighting. It feels like the fat person problems are spoken about like they dont actually exist. "Your addiction isn't real, just listen to your body, eat intuitively (whatever that means to us), fat people dont need to lose weight, your body regulates to exactly where it wants to be, etc"
    I just hope she understands how she sounds when she does these videos. It's very alienating to me as a plus sized viewer and it feels insensitive to plus sized people in general. It feels like another "One size fits all but it's really for skinny people" thing. Honestly I've realized that her advice hasnt been helping me. Gonna unsub now.

      I think she's run out of actual youtubers she can criticize, so now she goes and makes videos about literally anybody that eats on camera and shames them. It's horrible.
      Trisha never claimed that her way of eating is good and that her viewers should follow her. She has said that it's an addiction, and therefor this video is so insensitive and frankly cruel.

      I hear you. I’m beyond frustrated with people who tell me to “eat intuitively.” It’s too harsh an example, (but not really), but imagine if you told an alcoholic to just “drink intuitively.” Like what??

    People’s health is THEIR business. I have not ever seen her having a severe negative impact on the eating disorder community the way other influencers have. As someone who has struggled with a restrict eating disorder, I have never seen those who also struggle, whether in the present or in the past, complain about Trisha’s eating in that way. Of course I could be wrong, but no body that I have seen ever seems triggered or even care about her diet (unless they are making fun of her for overeating, which is truly the only triggering part.) Talking about food or diet (choice of food, not “dieting”) will always trigger an eating disordered person, that is a given. But if anything, I and others are MOST triggered by people commenting on other people’s diets and judging it when they are not the person’s personal doctor or nutritionist, the way this video has seemed to do, as well as putting a picture of her putting food into her mouth mid bite in the thumbnail.. for what? If we are going to talk about her negative impact on vulnerable people, let’s focus on her attacking people for drama constantly and exploiting the mental health community/ other mentally ill people. Not her diet, or impact on the ed community when I have genuinely never even seen an actual disordered person severely triggered by this. People fear this girl apart by the millions and never hold back, and still I have never seen the ed community saying that she is severely triggering or upsetting in that way. I’m not a fan of Trisha in the literal slightest, but this all just feels unnecessary. That’s my personal view.

    I love these videos I find them really educational. Are used to struggle with an eating disorder. But I got some counseling not for my eating disorder but for something else and after I received counseling for the other thing I felt more confident and I gained a lot of weight because I actually start eating again and I didn’t know how to properly eat. I’m in the process of trying to lose weight in a healthy way and I find these videos to be very helpful.

    I lost 20 pounds without any specific diet. I just ate more fish, chicken breast, vegetables and fruit. Less soda, added sugars in general. I still eat ice cream, fast food, and anything I want in moderation. I don't make any foods off limits. I also walk more. I definitely can agree with Abby. Much better way to live too. I have tried eating a very low calorie diet and it didn't last long. Didn't even lose any weight because I couldn't stand how I felt. I also was afraid I would develop an ED. I feel much better eating the way I do now and it was more successful.

    • @shelbyjoneff
      @shelbyjoneff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Alice Cooke I don’t think that Abbey’s intention is to shame at all. Abbey made this video (and others like it) to help viewers recognize harmful behaviors and become educated on how to improve their relationships with food. For better or for worse, Trish has influence over her viewers and a certain responsibility comes with that. I think Abbey’s “passion” comes more from a place of concern and care, and less from judgment toward Trish. I really don’t think Abbey would make a career out of helping so many people recover from disordered eating if she didn’t understand the sensitivity surrounding it and if she didn’t have a heart for people.

      i’m sorry but this comment totally rubs me the wrong way. i agree trishas body looks good in the first clip but does that mean she should just keep eating junk and nothing but junk every day? wouldn’t it be better if she looked that way while having a remotely decent diet? the way she looks doesn’t matter she’s still prone to so many issues. that’s what this entire channel is about educate yourself.

    I used to think my diet was unhealthy, but while watching this video i realize i'm actually not that bad. I eat twice at day, and it's mostly bread, eggs, rice, beans, veggie soup, steamed chicken or chicken stew, pasta with minced meat, tomato, onion & carrot salad + guava juice when we have enough money to buy fruit. I don't eat fried foods nor drink sodas. When l want something sweet, i buy bananas or papaya. I only get super hungry at night during my period days. So here's the thing, having a limited budget for food is the reason why i don't have a lot of options. My situation has forced me to stay away from unhealthy options like salty snacks or candy bars i used to love a lot as a kid. It's actually kinda sad, i can't even eat cake on my birthday cause it's so expensive where i live. I wish i had their money to eat more things. Lately, i have strong cravings for pineapple. Can't afford it tho. 😭🤧

    I normally love these videos, but this one was a bummer for me. Because there are tons of rich influencers you review with clearly fake videos, and obviously highly calculated meals... Trisha for me is a real human. She is a regular person who consistently struggles with her body. And she doesn’t sugar coat anything. She makes a lot of people feel normal. Not everyone eats grain bowls for every meal. Obviously she struggles with BED and she is open about that. But also, it’s nice to see someone be honest. It’s easy to say “get help” and harder to achieve it. I’d take Trisha over a “perfect” influencer any day.

    When I was 12 i went to my friends slumber party. They were all a little thinner then me. I wasn't overweight but they were just smaller built then me. They were actually starting themselves, and doing it to get skinny. I wanted to be smaller like them, I always had bigger thighs, so I started doing it too. I didn't eat the entire time I was at the slumber party. My mom picked me up during the afternoon the next day and I was so hungry but didn't want to eat. She got upset with me and told me that my body is fine and that its not good for you to not eat. She was kinda angry with me for ever considering that, anyways my stomach was upset from not eating for that long and she poured me a bowl of cheerios. Just a random memory I have . That's how some younger girls are though, they are easily influenced so people need to be careful with the content they put out
