    • @fatoumfatoumeh
      @fatoumfatoumeh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Not all foods are a necessity for life, there are ‘foods’ that are literally worse than cigarettes when consumed regularly and in large portions. Sure, I believe in indulging in cravings, but it depends on the person. If that person is an obese food addict, they might misunderstand what intuitive eating is, and since food addicts are constantly craving all sorts of unhealthy foods, indulging in their cravings is just going to make them bigger. If you have addictions, the only way is to restrict yourself. For eg., if you are an obese sugar junkie and you know you can’t stop at one cookie, then avoid cookies completely. I’ve lost nearly 100 pounds and have kept off the weight for 15 years, ex-binge eater, so I know what I’m talking about. People who have never been obese will never understand the struggle with issues like food addiction and binge-eating, it’s real and it’s hella ugly, and it is DIFFICULT to overcome, it’s no different than a chain-smoker’s struggle to quit smoking. There is no easy solution.

    • @carrieotoole340
      @carrieotoole340 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      exactly, and for the vast majority of people it isn't neurologically addictive like cigarettes or alcohol. the 'addiction' only comes from deprivation

Whereas other behaviors we hold we are less likely to hold cognitive dissonance if we don’t personally recognize them as “bad” or “good”. Of course, It could also be things we are personally aware of, insecure about or or interested in that influences our awareness of an interest & engagement. However, when you’re very overweight, you’re undoubtedly causing stress harm to your body, even if it doesn’t yet show on some basic panels. Your joints alone are put through far more than the average individual and that wouldn’t be tested, and that inflammation can lead to other issues.

      @@ml2620 having a high level of HDL cholesterol is bad and is definitively linked to heart attack and stroke. LDL cholesterol doesn’t matter as much and actually works to lube up our veins and help pass HDL cholesterol around and not build up and keeps blood circulating. I had very high cholesterol from 19-20 and reversed it with a drastic diet change (against my doctors wishes at first whom wanted to put me on pills for it, she later asked me to keep a food diary to study my success in lowering my cholesterol with diet). Now I just watch what I eat and am aware of how much HDL cholesterol I’m eating in a day.

      Sure, older women’s metabolism slows down. But where does the arbitrary 1600kcal number come from? There is no magic number that any demographic should be eating. Also her setting 1200kcal as the minimum is scary. Very few adults can get all their required macro/ micronutrients from that amount of food regardless of their activity level. Like- maybe if you are tall and have a big build, but generally, it's not. I'm active and I maintain a healthy weight eating around 2000 calories. If I wasn't active, like most people aren't, 1600 doesn't seem so far fetched to me. A lot of women can eat that and mantain a healthy weight.

    As a psychologist all I hear is what we call "authoritarian voices" when Gilian is talking. These voices represent very rigid, self critical and sometimes mean ego states (parts of our personality) that we develop in childhood and adolescence - mostly from our parents and society. Ultimately these rigid ego states actually want to protect us from harm and blame, so they have a "good" purpose but in Gillians case, she seems to be completely identified with these voices, which usually is a sign that 1. They are way out of control and dominate the whole internal system and 2. They probably protect a wounded inner child, so I guess she must have had some really sad experiences in her childhood related to her body or her acceptance in general. I'm sorry for her... unfortunately she passes down her authoritarian voices now to everyone else who listens to her. 😔

Then I ended up taking a break from intense exercise, and all of a sudden what I thought was my lack of willpower/boredom leading to wanting to snack all day was actually just under fueling myself.. all of a sudden I wasn’t wanting to snack all day and smaller meals filled me up for longer. when I was less active I was able to realize I could follow my hunger cues and my size/weight didn’t noticeably fluctuate (I don’t weigh myself, that helps too!). And like Abbey talks about removing the moral labels (“good” vs “bad”) from food helped me give myself grace! It’s all just food. Thoughts may still come up but I’m able to more easily move on. Wish I could better or more succinctly summarize, best of luck to your friend ☺️

    I don't know, something about her just rubs me the wrong way. This whole "I'm better than you because I am a certain way, at a certain weight in this body that is 'approved' by society" mentality... She's so caught up in this dietculter thing that she can't see that different people have different conditions. And I think that comes from a place of fearing weight gain, like she thinks if she allows herself to eat more than a certain amount of calories, she somehow magically will balloon to the weight she once was.
    She just seems so angry and strung out.
    At around 6.44 when she describes it as "intense and hostile"...yeah I would say she describes herself..

    The no pain no gain approach is so toxic. I thought I was sore from working out and kept going when I should have rested. Instead I was hurt for weeks and it took me a month to slowly ease into working out again. It doesn’t mean you’re lazy if you take off days or do less intense workouts when your body is tired. Yoga is healthy for your mind and body. It’s beyond just stretching. Each exercise has its benefits no matter the intensity. Muscles need time to repair, so it’s good to mix it up.

      Have you watched Chellsie Memmel's return to competitive gymnastics? She was an Olympian as a teen and now that she's in her 30s, paying attention to her body is so important. She felt some twinges in her hamstring and rested it for 2 weeks, because she knew it was either 2 weeks of not doing a skill or never doing it again because of injury.

    I went on a 1200 diet in college (lost about 22 lbs) and I was so severely anemic and iron deficient. I was so weak, tired and in so much pain. I ended up having to take 3 90mg pills of iron a day to get back to normal. I will never do that again because it’s insane.

    I know 1200 calories is what toddlers eat, so it would make sense adults needs much more… but aren’t toddlers and kids so so so active? Like we are pretty sedentary as adults, although in larger bodies. Does that matter? Is 1200 or so calories still always too low?

    Only a few minutes into the videos and there so many things I just want to scream at Jillian for saying. Omg the dress size equals health thing … total bs. I’m a size 2 (and short) and not healthy due chronic illnesses- trying to gain more weight. I know plenty of people who are a size 16 and are much healthier than me. Also people who are significantly taller than me can be a size 16 and be at a weight that even health professionals who use only BMI as an indicator of health would deem then healthy. So Jillian, maybe you need to educate yourself more. 🤦‍♀️

    In my opinion, she's in perimenopause. All her fears as a kid have come back, and she's terrified of gaining weight.
    I would feel sad for her, but there's a whole lot of us former anorexics heading towards menopause who are also feeling a revival of our old feelings.
    Menopause is THE most dangerous time for an anorexic. The vast majority of deaths due to eating disorders occur at that time, not as young people.

    What I find funny is that she is against everything that sounds “easy” to her!
    Intuitive eating: too easy how can you eat everything you want?
    Weight loss aids (surgery / meds): it’s a shortcut you are cheating!!!
    Body acceptance: how can you just like yourself? You must hate yourself!!
    There is no winning with her, it’s either her own method or it’s trash :/
    And it has to revolve around weight loss!! There is nothing about feeling better or improving habits

    Girl! Abby, you are so helpful and such an advocate for true health and peace around food! I had bad stomach aches and loss of appetite over the sumer for a few months, and started to lose weight, but then it also helped me to slow down my eating and I started to shift out of my binge eating habits. A few other things really helped catalyze some changes for me, including working night shift and having less stress at work, and more time to prep food for the week at home. I feel like I distanced myself from media and people who trigger shame about my body, and that helped too. I really appreciate all that you're doing putting out this content! It's like there has been a real voice for this kind of course correcting side to the arguments of body positivity vs constant shame driven dieting and pressured exercise. I needed this slow version of healing and changing and I really think a lot of people do! Our bodies do a lot of things slowly naturally, and it's ok to take things at a slow pace and really be present for every feeling that comes up. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 💗💗💗

    I've been working so hard on eating more intuitively and breaking the restrict/binge cycle. Here I am, enjoying some of a bag of my favorite chips. I bought the bag on Sunday. It's Thursday. I find I can now eat a nice snack serving of chips (sometimes with sour cream to make it more filling, sometimes not) without eating the whole bag or feeling guilty and pledging to nEvEr BuY tHeM aGaIn. It's so much less dramatic. It's great. That's what intuitive eating means to me.

    It seems like Jillian is viewing intuitive eating through a lens of fear (whether personal or from a business standpoint). When I began recovering from an ED I was convinced that my body did not need over X calories, and more than that would lead to exponential weight gain. It did not happen. My weight is higher than it once was, but has remained stable for years without my micromanaging my intake. Also, allowing myself to eat what I like made it EASIER to NOT binge, which I thought was absurd when I began. Knowing there are cookies in the freezer and I can eat as many as I want whenever (and not adjust my calories to “fit it in”) has led to me eating a smaller portion than I would have in ED days because I know that “treats” are always there and I can always have them. Food looses its intense appeal and just becomes something that runs in the background as part of a more complex and nuanced life. Paradoxically, you need to relinquish control in order to gain control over disordered eating habits.

    Talking about the fitness part of this: I've recently had a lot of fatigue, and my PCM and I landed on anxiety treatment, and part of how we are treating it is to have me try to move daily, so my goal is just to move and for it to be therapeutic. No, I'm not doing an efficient workout. I'm doing 10 minutes on an elliptical at a 2 and casual pace or doing bodyweight exercises with low impact or doing some gentle movements.
    I was doing full-on workouts this summer and fall and loving them, but now I'm overwhelmed by that, so small is where I'm at right now, and I'm loving it!

    I am classified as "morbidly obese" (god, i hate that statement) and while I not actively pursuing weightloss, I AM changing my eating habits....at a doctor's appointment this week, I was told I should be eating 2200 calories a day. By my doctor. So....yeah, I'm gonna listen to my certified health practitioner over a fatphobic, diet culture enriched woman who has built her life around being obsessed with the number on the scale.
    My heart goes out to all young people who see videos like Jillian's and end up with disordered eating behaviors. She is so problematic, how the hell she still has a platform is a mystery to me.
