Ouya LIED to me as well, and stiffed me for thousands of dollars. They hired my company to photograph images that were to be used "specifically" only for Press and Social Media. We had a contract stating so, and they wanted an extremely discounted rate as these photos were NEVER supposed to be used for advertising or anything other than Press. Low and Behold, a year later I'm walking though a Target store and see an Ouya console on the shelf. I pick it up to see MY PHOTOS being used on the product packaging itself, and the advertising. SMH. Anyhow, my agent sent them the bill for the additional usage, and they refused to pay and ignored the request. We threatened a lawsuit. Julie's lawyers claimed that she had sold everything off to Razer to pay their already enormous debt, and they had no money left. When they were made aware they could be liable for up to $150,000 in copyright infringement fees...they agreed to pay half...and...we decided to take the loss as a tax write off instead. Moral of the story...beware of doing business with people who lie through their teeth.

To be fair, I think the “nothing special” line was supposed to mean that the console used common hardware, making it open to modding and hacking (back when that was still a selling point), but it was expressed very poorly.

Actually, the Ouya is just a basic Android device in a square box that you can install regular Android apps on. Thus you can install Android games on it as well as install retro game system emulators to play NES, SNES, C64, Genesis/Megadrive, etc. games. So if you use it like a RaspberryPi with RetroPi software installed it you could use it as retro gaming device. It won’t play modern Android games very well, if at all due to its outdated hardware and old Android version but it’s not totally useless. That’s a lot better use then as a paperweight given how the light the unit is anyways. Also you can install media software on it to use it as a set top box for playing video and music.

So I had one of these bois and was an OG backer. Here is my argument for the OUYA-
In 2013 for someone just out of highschool with no money the OUYA wasn't half bad for $99.
There was a good sized hacking community around it so it meant you could do things like:
    1. Sideload other games onto the device and I actually played a lot of GTA San Andreas on the OUYA (It was an android based device and ran most android games ok) .
2.. There was an app that let it act as a chrome cast with the addition of Netflix and youtube apps it was a good media device.
    3. USB in the rear meant using any controller/ keyboard and mouse was also supported. I also hooked up a terabyte harddrive to it and ran a local network upnp media server off of the OUYA.
    4. (Edit) Also forgot the thing was great for emulators! I played a lot of NES, Snes, and N64 on mine!
    Some other neat features:
    5. (Edit) it was also super small and portable with standard full sized HDMI out and 12v adapter. Great for just throwing in a bag and taking on the go.
    6. (Edit last one I swear) I'm also going to make a quick case for the controller. Buttons were very clicky, analog triggers, a middle touchpad (which the PS4 controller was doing but the controller cost almost as much as a whole OUYA), and despite the goofy shape it was VERY comfortable with removable metal plates on the front that served as battery covers and was held in place with strong magnets which made changing batteries super easy but with enough hold it never felt like the plates would come off!
Was it a good gaming console? No. Was it a very versatile piece of tech that let you modify it in ways most companies won't let you? Oh yeah. In the end I think if it had been marketed more like a raspberry pie or micro/android experimental dev computer for people looking to tinker with android then it would have been way more successful. Putting it up against consoles killed it. RIP OUYA.

    • @primalconvoy
      @primalconvoy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

My Ouya was great too. It's not really "hackable" per sec, as everything you've described above is a standard feature of Android. However, I did many of the same things as you. I had to run apps from the external drive though, due to the tiny "6gb" (2gb for system memory plus 6gb for apps) of internal memory.
Ouya's online shop failed, as it was easier and better to either sideload stuff for free, sideload previously paid-for apps (from Google Play) via installing backups from our phones, or even paying and then downloading apks directly from the devs.
My Ouya ended up becoming a media consumption device, with some sideloaded games, emulators, etc (just like my Nvidia Shield TV pro is now).

on windows, microsoft killed DirectInput in favor of XInput, which is much easier to work with but only works with the exact inputs an Xbox controller offers. it seems to me that controller APIs in general, across most platforms, evolved in the same direction: easy and standardized, but samey and inflexible. I don't know. I would think most people that don't have a lot of money would instead just buy a tablet. Since that can play pretty much everything that the OUYA can and can do much more as well.
Of course it's not the best experience but if you care about getting the best experience why wouldn't you just save up a little more for a PS3 or X360?
Consoles are still going strong because they do a good job existing alongside tablets. For example it's cheaper to buy a PS5 and a tablet than to get a laptop of equal power. The OUYA just isn't a big enough leap over mobile gaming to really justify it's existence especially since having a tablet is almost considered mandatory today.

I recently took a basic marketing course in college and the first, most BASIC concept we ever learned was to NEVER UNDERSELL YOURSELF. Watching Julie struggle through that interview, outright saying there’s “nothing special” about her product, unveiling it from a paper bag, and not even bothering to know how many launch titles her own product would have made me cringe right out of my skin. This should go for ANY professional encounter: if you don’t seem to respect or care about your own work, why would you expect your investors, employers, or colleagues to care either?

You should never advertise your console as 'hackable'. You should really just be more professional and say 'it's open source'. Open source implies a more positive message that you want to be able to program on it and mod on it. It's not about 'hacking' per se. That's how I see it anyway.
