The toughest part of getting down one of Phil's basslines isnt figuring the notes...its getting his syncopation down...any bass player knows that...but few achieve....you nailed it dead on..!!!!!!
This is unbelievable! I've never seen anyone even attempt at Phil Lesh transcription this complicated and you got it spot on! There is basically zero Phil bass tabs available currently. Great performance too. Wow, thank you!
Same. I've been trying to learn the Phil and Bob parts since I was 13. That's 47 years working on this song. Not a bad path on which to learn triads, inversions, syncopation and speed.
You can slow it! On a laptop, in the video window: settings (the gear), playback speed. On a phone, in the video window, the three vertical dots, playback speed. Enjoy!
I have been "under the influence" of Phil Lesh for 50 years now. As a bassist I am astonished by what you did right there. Awesome ! Jason what strings are on that bass in this clip? LOVE IT
What bass is this, a Guild ? BTW, would love a transcription of Mama Tried from that album, Phil is all over the fretboard on that one. Thanks, and great job!
It's a Guild Starfire II, which is a re-issue of the semi-hollow bass that Phil used in the late 60s before he had it "Alembicized" in the early 70s by the folks who started Alembic. That entailed a lot of brass hardware but more consequently, some really funky electronics. This particular one is maple, which goes for a bit more than the more basic ones that are made from mahogany.

Phil was a genius. Wow. Amazing bass playing. And this was him improvising!!
RIP Phil Lesh
More Dead tunes please. More Phil great job.. very nice!
Great transcription job revealing just how brilliant these relatively simple lines work, thanks to Phil's perfect sense or synchronistic syncopation.
When I was in high school I listened to this song dozens of times Phil Lesh Baseline inspired me to play bass

Great performance !!!!!!👌👏👏👏👏👏
Very nice especially since you nailed it finger style while Phil uses a pick.
He played fingerstyle quite a bit during ‘70-71 but not on uptempo numbers like this.
Keep up the Dead tabs! 👍👍👍

That bass is dead sexy
What key is this in?
G major
Skillfully played, but that bass of yours doesn't have enough knobs on it. Gotta have a lot of knobs.
