Very interesting video. Shad, I was born, raised and still live in Indiana and an IU grad as well :) My parents are from SWVA and I have family in Kingsport, Johnson City, and Surgoinsville TN. I recall the long drives from the Tri-Cities airport as a kid visiting my grandparents in the 70s. The last time I visited the area was in 2019 and the mountains are beautiful!

Word of warning, we moved here from Florida and absolutely love it except for one thing, the severely substandard healthcare. I would recommend being closer to Knoxville to access UT medical center, as I was an ICU nurse in FL and the Tri cities area has some of the worst health care I’ve seen in my adult life. The local hospitals were taken over by a monopoly shortly after we arrived, and it has been all downhill from there.

Thank you so much for this video. I have to say, after planning to move to NE Tennessee for the past 10 years, I was almost afraid to watch this video for fear of you bringing up something that I truly couldn’t live with/by. Thankfully, the list provided me with MORE reasons to move instead of less!! 😊 I only have a little over one year left until I get to move to the Tri-City area and trust me when I say that I am literally counting down the days!! The traffic and population down here have exploded since then and we’re over it. We’re originally from a tiny town in MA that only had one traffic light so FL has been an adjustment for sure. People flee blue cities and blue states in the Midwest typically due to several things - the cold weather, high taxes and high cost of living, plus the social disintegration of their city (in the case of large cities, like Chicago), which often can be blamed on a the liberal politics of the place they are fleeing. Then they will move to a wonderful, unspoiled, low tax base, low cost of living area like north East Tennessee, and what do they do? They vote Democratic. I have seen this in my relatives, and it never ceases to amaze me.

Can I ask why you a transplant are inviting people to move here. We are tired of so many people moving here, it’s changing East TN. We know it’s a beautiful area. We like the rural and the farm land but now farms are being sold to make subdivisions for housing. Housing prices are going up and hard to find. Local people are having a hard time finding homes, outside people don’t mind paying higher prices cause that’s what they are used to, so that knocks local out of being able to afford. Of course people are going to be nice, it’s the way we were raised in a simple Christian ways, have good manners and be respectful to people. But if you talk to locals most are unhappy about the rise of people moving here. Like it or not it changes an area. We want East Tennessee to stay the way it is. Please don’t come here and bring the things you’re running from to our communities and try to change things.

There is definitely less culture, less options in restaurants, stores, salons, and surprisingly bars. Im not a drinker and my party days are long since passed but there is no nightlife here. Sidewalks prertty much roll up at 8 or 9 PM. You will not find wine bar, a cosmo bar, a dance club, jazz club, college bar, although there are numerous brew pubs. Food is good but limited. If BBQ or southern style dining is not your thing then your options are cut in half. Lots Mexican, a decent amount of asian cousine. 1 greek, a few italian, only chain steakhouses, zero fine dining, very little innovative restaurants. If your looking for trendy, innovative, creative dining like you find in bigger cities you wont find it here. Vegan....good luck. Its mostky fast food, BBQ, and Southern Style dining and chain restaurants. If your a fashionista. I hope your comfortable with shopping online. Or willing to drive a few hours. Belk is about as good as it gets aside from a few overpriced small shops that tend to be specialized. I like it here but growing up in midwest surburbia the lack of ootions here can be very frustrating.
