For 20 years, I have taken oral Minoxidil (15mg twice daily), to treat high blood pressure!. In 2014, due to receiving a kidney transplant, my doctors stopped my oral Minoxidil, and during a 3 month period I lost lots of hair. When I restarted Minoxidil, it didn't regrow the loss!.

Sir i am being honest , I started oral minoxidil just after a 2 week after you posted the video mentioning that you have started oral minxidil , reason for starting oral minoxidil was because topical never helped me in regrowing even when I used it along with finasteride for more than 1+ years. So my regime after including oral minox was like Oral minxodil 2.5 mg everyday Oral finasteride everyday Minxodil 5% every other day Hair oil every other day Shampoo my hair on the oiling day . After 10 months I must say I have recovered almost 20℅ of my hair, my condition is better than ever , I can go out without caps , hair got thicker and fuller
I had a big heart ache just from the minox foam. I woke up several times in the middle of the night and never went back to sleep. I don't know if it was some kind of fake packaging, but I used to use the same product with no problem. I dermarolled 0.5mm and may have given a higher dose of minoxidil. Then I immediately used minox for a while and woke up in the night. But then three days later I used the minox foam again and had severe heart pain for about three days. After a week, it went away easily. Since then I don't even give foam and try to use natural oils. and twice a week 1,25 mg of finasteride + a lot of other vitamins like silicon, zinc, biotin, sulphur, reishi mushrooms and quality sampons
I could not manage more than 2 weeks with oral minoxidil. Chest compression and could not reach full deep inhalation / exhalation without feeling a little pinch. Also little strange activity on the left side (maybe irregular heart beat) Did not want to risk more, my heart health is more important. Now will continue only with dutasteride 0.5 mg + vitamins in 1 pill only 3 times per week. After 2 days I stop minoxidil, I start feeling the chest normal and deeper breathing. Hopefully in a few days no more of these nasty symptoms.
So I have to assume the only reason you didn't experiment with cutting the dosage of Oral Min in half, is because you believe in only sticking the 'the least possible efficacious dose'? (2:51). I would have tried half -- because applying topical Min is a huge pain, and popping a pill is just so much easier. They do sell a spray that is both Min and Fin (Hims), I thought about trying (0.3 Fin concentration).
Agree that oral dutasteride or finasteride (5a reductase inhibitors) are the most important. They are the only thing that slows or stops continued hair loss. Ladies have a 3rd choice of the anti-androgen spironolactone.
Thanks for the information. I’ve been thinking of moving to oral minoxidil, but after hearing your side effects, think I’ll stick to topical. I tried propecia about 9 years ago, but got bad side effects on that so stopped. I’m still NW2.5, and nearly 50, so not too bad. Just have to hope my hairline doesn’t go back too much further, and pray something new comes out in next few years….
Start with r/tressless and you might find a way to create a stack that works for your specific goals and budget. Mine is dutasteride 0.5mg (3x/week) + topical minoxidil + tretinoin 0.05% + microneedling at 1.5mm (2x/month) + stemoxydine. There are many, many more elements you could use to compose your own stack. All it takes, is doing one's research and not being too afraid 😉
Just stick to tropical minoxidil. It gives better results to me with no side effects unlike oral minoxidil which grows thick hair on my shoulders and back but not on my head. It creates more problems than solving the previous one
So How effective is oral minoxidil as compared to topical...can u explain the differences u experienced while on topical and these 12 months on oral minoxidil ?
@stevie2686 - Simple, I don't want to be another balding 68 year old guy. Having my health and hair increases my odds at finding a woman. (never married, no Children) As long as you're alive, there's always hope you'll still have a chance.
Interesting! I am experiencing something similar wirth 2.5 after 3 months but, did you vist cardiologist? I went and I did: EKG, stress test and echocardiogram because it felt like "pericarditis" but you know what? Nothing, all the tests are ok.
Thank you so much for this video! Same symptoms for me too! Palpitations dizzy chest pains low blood pressure! Using the foam topical works for me but I think I’m getting extreme side effects so I have to stop taking it and that sucks because it is working!
I ditched minoxidil for alternatives that actually do better for me, Matt. Maybe thats also Your way to consider. So: I used oral minoxidil for a short time too. It dried my skin so much that it interrupted with my sleep and skyrocketed my stress levels. I switched it back to topical minoxidil, but no matter what I did- the alcohol was too much for my skin. It kept destroing my hairs. I switched to topical high coffeine coffee with rosamery oil and dermapening it (0,6mm) every 2,5 day. My hair got better. Its around one month since I see some new tiny hairs. Low in number and slim, but they are here. Drawback is that its a little messy and the coffee has to stay for 20 minutes on the head
@@tomdude75I was using topical minoxidil 5% liquid. It made my scalp so itchy. I have heard there is less irritation from the foam. Do you have experience? I also hate how the liquid minoxidil left my hair feeling dirty. Right now just with finasteride and red light I have enough regrowth, so maybe I do not have to restart minoxidil. I'm interested in switching to dutasteride from finasteride because I think it is a better medication.
Try using Mielle hair products, i have their conditioner and it really does help lift the hair, sometimes with just shampoo it flattens out your hair over time.
I’ve been on minoxidil foam for 1 months and had terrible side effects on my heart. Increased heart beat, low on energy (like the life sucked out of me). I just look tired all the time. Feels like big pharma playing down the impact of this medicine. Props to you for documenting your journey and honesty. I’d rather live a long life with no hair.
Big pharma? Do you realize how hard it is to get a prescription for this stuff? There are few hair surgeons and dermatologists who push this stuff, I literally spent a year fighting to get a prescription for OM.
Minoxidil oral is not approved by the FDA or big pharma for hair. Minoxidil came out for people who had uncontrollable blood pressure years ago and always had a side effect profile to be concerned about. However, it was then taken in higher doses. The low dose now is doable for some but for some the heart problems, ie, tamponade may occur. Be smart if you use it and know how to use it.
Sorry to hear about your side effects. Better stop it entirely, hair is not worth damaging parts of your body for. Hopefully a better solution will be brought to market soon :)
Completely agree. Eventually, men just have to learn to own-it and build confidence. Losing hair is not a health issue, it's a perspective that we think women won't like us bald (which is not true, by in large).
I had the same issue with 2.5 after 3 months, now started 1.4mg and notices that sometimes back this sort of chest pression but (no hearbeat, no palpitations,no edema) is just weird and impredictable. Also ECG, ECo, stress test with all positive results, have you stopped definitely?
I have been a good responder for topical minoxidil over years. However, I stopped a while ago because it changes my hair texture and makes it dry like crazy. Then, Used oral minoxidil started by 0.625 mg, then 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg and finally 5 mg daily. Oral minoxidil never helped my scalp hair, it was never even near the topical minoxidil results. On oral minoxidil (1 year) and hair density decreased and my scalp is visible. I cannot add propecia or dutasteride due to past sexual side effects, but I do use nutrafol men supplement (saw palmetto). I lost confidence in Oral minoxidil, and I think its overrated. Any thoughts?
5:54 Sorry but doesn’t it make more sense when cycling off oral minoxidil, to start a sound regimen of topical minoxidil at the same time in order to counter the effects of shedding?
You are the perfect candidate for PRP. You probably won't need to use minox that much after doing PRP for 6 months. PRP will help with your hair thickness.
i only thin on the temples and my hair loss is fairly slow so im doing that. if you have more widespread hairloss (like matt) and potentially faster hair loss, you would most likely need to do it daily.
Did you ever have issues with topical Minoxidil? I took a full cap once a day for a year then started getting chest pain every day. I've been off it for 40+ days and still have issues. Got my heart and lungs checked but no problems were found.
I've had this too don't let ppl gaslight you. It took me about a year off of topical minoxidil to feel mostly back to normal. I still once in a while get some chest pain in that left ribcage where the heart is located, I notice it usually when I'm getting sick with a cold or run down. Did every test available from the doctor no issue, only started after minoxidil. At least the fast heartbeat is gone.
I want to ask you why you didn't think about taking a number of beard grafts for thickening up your top? It worked very well on my FUT scar but i used 1000 grafts so i don't have enough sources for my top. The hair from beard are a bit different but it matches with the existing hair
So do you think the side affects from oral minoxidil will go even when using topical minoxidil? Also oral finesteride once a week, is that ok too or only when using topical finesteride aswell, thank you.
Oral fin once a week is unlikely to do anything without a topical as well. The lowest dose of fin that I've heard of is 3 mg/week. I gave that a try but found I needed to go higher.
Very generous of you to be the "Lab Rat" and get to the bottom of this temptation. I value your input - Most Grateful ! Your next assignment (should you choose to accept: Castor Oil !) Yeah - I get it - strange - but I began using it on a laser mark (skin repair) on the bridge of my nose (suppose to reduce the appearance of scars) but also pushed the oil up to the nose/forehead area where I also had some scars (a childhood fall) and noticed an increase in eyebrow hair growth as a result. I also began to take daily, about a half teaspoon orally and noticed within a week a difference in scalp hair texture (positive). Its been about three months - don't know if I've had any scalp hair growth, but time will tell. (no otherwise side effects) Its curious.
I've been doing microneedling(1.5mm dermaroller once a week) since beginning of May this year and only used topical oils such as jojoba/Moringa seed. So far I have yet to see a single shed of hair which is F'ed up. I'm not on any pharmaceutical drug as we speak.

@aerialpink that's awesome ! Glad you are doing well on oral minoxidil. HairCafe doesn't say nobody can take oral minoxidil. He just says that the side effects profil of OM is not good and not worth the risk. But of course some people (just like yourself) react well to OM without getting bad side effects. Edit : HairCafe don't recommend OM. That's it. Topical minoxidil is a much safer option. But if you are doing well on OM : stay on it . Just make sure you visit your cardiologist regularly.
I took Oral Minoxidil for a week and at end of the week, I didn't notice any kind of heart issues or heart palpitation at all, but what I did notice that I was extremely tired and sleepy during the day I got body ache specially my arms. I had to stop it taking Oral Minoxidil. Although, I started taking it again but at a lower dose of 1.25 mlg. I wonder if anybody else noticed something similar.
It took 6 months of using 2.5 mg or oral minoxidil to get a scary side effect (and that happened just the other day). I am taking a break from it and if start taking it again, it will be a half dose.
I think you are rationalizing other factors causing your hairloss. It's stopping oral minoxidil, pure and simple. You may want to return to topical minox, perhaps with topical tretinoin as an absorption enhancer and sulfotransferase stimulant,
Were you prescribed a diuretic with the oral minoxidil? Being prescribed a diuretic with oral minoxidil was standard practice but for some reason hair loss clinics that prescribe oral minoxidil for hair loss seem to forget this. The pressure you felt in your chest is likely fluid build up.
Oh hey Matt, I got a question I've been unable to find the answer. Using Fin right now at 1mg a day -- some people say that they reduced to 0.5mg a day to prevent the side effects. But logically, I don't understand this, because the amount of DHT that is inhibited from 0.5mg and 1mg is not much different (I think only 7%). So it doesn't make sense why, if the side effects come from DHT limiting, why reducing to a 0.5mg does would have any effect. I would assume that skipping a day would be more effective at reducing sides, but I also don't like that idea, because it bounces your hormone levels up and down (DHT fluctation) -- and hormone fluctuation is where all the problems come from.
Tissue binding half life of Finasteride is 4-5 days. Only blood levels would fluctuate in such a scenario. Furthermore the affinity of different body tissues and cells is not the same for different molecules.
I had the Same thought. I'm just using oral fin 1mg daily. I also was thinking about minoxidil, but this Video Shows its actually dangerous and topical minox is pretty inconvinient in my opinion. I also have a good nutrition and Use alpecin but i'm thinking about Adding a growth Stimulant.
I got pretty crazy heart palpitations after 10months of topical minoxidil, I’ve stopped 5 days and it got better then I’ve started again with half the dose hopping I can keep my results. I’m also on 0,005 topical finasteride. I was maybe using too much minoxidil, hope it goes better in the next months cause it’s pretty scary when your heart starts going crazy
What strength min? My first use was 10% which made me dizzy and made my heart race sometimes, I cut the dose to half and built up gradually and never had a problem since. I now vary between 5%-10% topical minoxidil with and without PG and have zero issues
I started taking finastired first year of law school, the high pressure environment combined with resulting mood issues and brain fog made it completely unsustainable. I will try it again when I am at peak health and life is a bit less demanding. Currently on topical minoxidil, no problematic side effects besides some water weight. Optimal cognitive function is definitely more valuable than a full head of hair IMHO. I will try topical finasteride again in a few months once I am back at a good fitness level. For now, minoxidil, a good diet, no alcohol and daily exercise has helped a fair bit. I am certain over time there will be more evidence to demonstrate the vital importance of DHT in (some) males.
Also finasteride blocks mainly DHT, that's why peiple use it in conjunction with RU58841 to block Regular testosterone has well (which gets increased in the scalp when blocking conversation to DHT) You can also microneedle with topical minoxidil or even without
@@Drunk3nMonk3y72 both do actually, only DHT is much more potent in scalp tissue. Do you know if you are a SULTA1 (sulfotransferase) responder? That's how minoxidil works topically I've heard -- the sulfotransferase is required for proper conversion of the prodrug minoxidil to the active form in the hair shaft. Some people have inactive sulfotransferase enzymes in the hair shafts (likely due to genetic mutations in SULTA1) so typical topical minoxidil doesn't work for them. I'm not sure about the oral form - I've heard that oral minoxidil bypasses the sulfotransferase step somehow.

Why would one take pressure medication when one is healthy? Is it only to get more hair? Topical minoxidil is much better and at least it is external rather internal. Ingesting internally will work on the heart, lungs and veins like normal pressure medicine does. Go topical!

I did use topical minoxidil but stopped in February (only ever applied to the zones I eventually got transplanted, rarely on my crown and elsewhere). It's a blod pressure med, did you try to balance it out by increasing salt intake a little and measure your blood pressure daily?
Sir i am being honest , I started oral minoxidil just after a 2 week after you posted the video mentioning that you have started oral minxidil , reason for starting oral minoxidil was because topical never helped me in regrowing even when I used it along with finasteride for more than 1+ years.
So my regime after including oral minox was like
Oral minxodil 2.5 mg everyday
Oral finasteride everyday
Minxodil 5% every other day
Hair oil every other day
Shampoo my hair on the oiling day .

Appreciate the honest reporting.
Thanks for your honest report Matt. Much appreciated.
In my opinion what caused the poor density of your hair was the topical finasteride, you should use oral finasteride or dutasteride in mesotherapy
Agree that oral dutasteride or finasteride (5a reductase inhibitors) are the most important. They are the only thing that slows or stops continued hair loss.

There are many, many more elements you could use to compose your own stack. All it takes, is doing one's research and not being too afraid 😉

I ditched minoxidil for alternatives that actually do better for me, Matt. Maybe thats also Your way to consider. So:
I used oral minoxidil for a short time too.

Props to you for documenting your journey and honesty. I’d rather live a long life with no hair.
true
No side effects to me

What strength min? My first use was 10% which made me dizzy and made my heart race sometimes, I cut the dose to half and built up gradually and never had a problem since. I now vary between 5%-10% topical minoxidil with and without PG and have zero issues
Can you use both oral Minoxidil AND the topical? Cause the topical has been good for me and afraid to stop completely for something new (oral minox)
Also finasteride blocks mainly DHT, that's why peiple use it in conjunction with RU58841 to block Regular testosterone has well (which gets increased in the scalp when blocking conversation to DHT)

Testosterone doesn’t make you lose hair. Only DHT
@@Drunk3nMonk3y72 both do actually, only DHT is much more potent in scalp tissue. What is the problem with DHT being low from the oral finasteride?
Do you know if you are a SULTA1 (sulfotransferase) responder? That's how minoxidil works topically I've heard -- the sulfotransferase is required for proper conversion of the prodrug minoxidil to the active form in the hair shaft. Some people have inactive sulfotransferase enzymes in the hair shafts (likely due to genetic mutations in SULTA1) so typical topical minoxidil doesn't work for them. I'm not sure about the oral form - I've heard that oral minoxidil bypasses the sulfotransferase step somehow.
