Captain Bligh was written about Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Richard worked as the touring guitarist from 1989-1993. When Richard asked for more money Trent supposedly told him to "Get off his ass and go make a record" and further suggested for Richard to go be a Pizza Delivery guy if he wanted more money. Understanding Trent was in a rather bad place in those years as he was fighting with TVT Records over the right to Pretty Hate Machine and had a drinking problem. Trent and Richard have patched things up in the past few years though and they even played the rock and roll hall of fame induction ceremony together for NIN. Trent even asked him of they could play a cover of Hey Man, Nice Shot and had Richard sing the second verse of Head Like A Hole. Needless to say I'm glad they are not at odds anymore.

"Take a Picture" was a huge hit back in the day as it was versatile enough to be played on almost every radio station. I remember it getting played daily on alternative rock stations, hard rock stations, pop stations, etc. Bizarrely enough, it even made it to #1 on Billboard's "Hot Dance Music/Club Play" chart.

Between Short Bus and Title of Record Filter was released a couple really good songs for the movie soundtracks. They working with The Crystal Method for the song "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" from Spawn soundtrack and this song is goddamn banger (actually, the whole soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal, this was a great fusion of rock/metal bands collaborating with electronic musicians, highly recommended). This song definitely influenced the sound of Title of Record, making it cleaner and more eclectic, as opposed to the dirty and grittier sound of Short Bus. Also there was song from The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack called "Jurassitol" that sounds more like Short Bus stuff, but the song is great too.

I know The Amalgamut isnt liked by all, but i really enjoy it, and i think its definitely worth checking out. I saw them in Charlotte (or maybe Raleigh) at a festival, and i didnt want to see anyone but them...and of course they were the last band to play. Lol.

As much as I liked Short Bus, this album was my favorite (and probably still is) from Filter. It was first album that Richard released with an actual band, including Geno Lenardo, who would go on to form Device with Draid Draiman. While this album is very much a stylistic departure from Short Bus, it also keeps flourishes and some of the overall pacing from Short Bus within the record. Songs like Welcome to the Fold, I Will Lead You, and Skinny brought more of an alt rock/metal style to it, but The Best Things, Ms. Blue, and Cancer are definitely in the vein of their debut. And of course, Take A Picture was in a class all by itself.
BTW, I always get a kick out of/laugh at your candid reactions. They're great! ❤

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks so much for checking the reaction out, glad you enjoyed it! I really love the heavy, more unpolished quality to Short Bus and I was quite surprised at the shift with their sound on Title Of Record but it works just as well. Filter really did a great job fine tuning their sound and polishing it just enough to keep things fresh while still retaining the elements that I loved from their first record.

Filter is so underappreciated... the talent of Richard Patrick, who was in Nine Inch Nails in their early days on guitar, is undeniable (Patrick is the band essentially)... The industrial rock genre has flourished w/ NIN, Rammstein, Static-X, etc. However, Filter seems to have given the obscurity card of late...
Their 3rd album 'The Amalgamut' (2002) was under-promoted and was such a good record... I still listen to the single "Where do we go from here"... Patrick has kept Filter active between his studio work as a film soundtrack composer.
'The Sun comes out tonight' (2013) was also a standout record... Filter's latest album is 'The Algorithm' in 2023.

Always loved this album and the electronica influences.
You ever notice with a lot music (especially if you listen to a lot of different music and artists/bands/genres) you can kinda predict how it's likely to go? Especially if you've heard other tracks by the same artist/band? When I first listened to this album years ago, all those unexpected changes were a breathe of fresh air. I couldn't predict how it was going to go, and I love when that happens.
    The best things, indeed.

I absolutely agree, this album packs so much variety into its runtime. It started off with so much punchiness that when those gentler acoustic moments came I was not expecting them at all. Like you said, it's very refreshing when bands can always keep you guessing what they're going to bring next, and Filter definitely succeeded with that aspect on Title Of Record.

So much energy and "extra work" went into these songs, you can tell they just wanted to put their best out there, something very memorable and it worked. Filter is one of the lesser-known gems of the 90s, who thankfully avoided the whole Numetal trend.
This was probably their best album. It was the most experimental album of a really experimental band.
Hidden tracks were a thing on a lot of CDs. I think it was Tool (but I'm not certain) had an album with 99 tracks, but tracks 13-98 were blank. Another thing that was done was what you discovered, where they just let the recorder run for an indeterminate length of time and then put in another track.
It would be interesting to know how many of these albums or tracks end up on your playlists and staylists.
I'm also extremely envious of you in that you are on this journey discovery of amazing music from an era of amazing music. The 80s through the early 2000s was simply an unbelievable era of music.

It's gonna sound weird, but I so miss the angst of the 90s. I just miss it. Everything was permeated by this droning, contorting, vibrating sense of dread. I was a kid back then, but we all felt it. Radiohead's Paranoid Android album simply gave that feeling a name--effecrtively elevating it to the status of a symptom. But now that we live this vacuous, empty, disillusioned reality of the age of AI, I miss the exhiliration and the dread of the great music of the late 20th century. In a way, the fear of the fall was what drove us closer and closer to the edge. And now that we've collectively flung ourselves over the precipice, all that giddiness and the anticipatory grinding of teeth, and the biting of the nails, all that is gone now. What is left is just the android--in your pocket or in your hand, gathering data so it can suggest to you yet another great video to fuel your sense of nostalgia so you can buy yet another product for you to feel at home in this death valley of the human spirit.

Yeah this record is great, Filter incorporated so many elements on here and it works amazingly. Lots of variety! I'd love to see them live if I ever get the chance. And I've actually already heard that album you suggested, I checked it out last year when it was released. It is very wild, such a fun listen! I didn't know what to expect on each track.

    *Ok. Some recommendations:*
🟢 *Power Metal* Pantera's first Album with Phil Anselmo. A lot of people don't know about this album. It's got that 80 glam rock style, right before they wrote "Cowboys From Hell". The track "we'll meet again" is probably one of the best guitar solo's Dimebag ever wrote" Check it out!!
🟢 We need more *Type O Negative* please.
🟢 *Fear Factory* If you're into industrial metal, especially their first 4 albums. They redefined industrial metal.
    Until next time!!
