    Fun fact, The fuzzy vocal effect on the opening on Dead and Bloated was achieved by Scott weiland singing into the pickups of a Les Paul guitar owned by Dean DeLeo (Guitarist of STP)

      @@Heathcoatman It literally works. Have you never done it successfully? it's pretty easy. Guitar pickups register vibrations. Vocal cords make sound by vibrating. If you think that singing in to guitar pickups doesn't work I would advise you not to pursue a career in science of any kind...

    Between 1991 and 1992, you had really great hard rock albums. Pearl Jam had Ten, Soundgarden had Badmotorfinger, Alice in chains had dirt, and even Nirvana had Nevermind. You also had Core by Stone Temple Piolets. While most people will know it for Creep and Plush! It was Dead and bloated, Sex type thing, and Wicked Garden that got me into the album. Scott Wieland was just an amazing vocalist. Hope you get to check out Purple.

  • @woof9408
    @woof9408 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +14

    I remember the critics hating them for being grunge "posers" when they debut. Yes there are similarities to grunge and honestly it doesn't matter if they are or not. Scott Weiland was a phenominal singer and gifted showman. His live performances were always more Mick jagger. There live shows screamed more 70s arena Rock than grunge bar scene.

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      I agree, people get way too obsessed with labeling bands as a certain genre, and it's kind of sad in my opinion. What makes STP's music unique and easy to listen over and over is the fact they managed to fuse jazz, country, metal, folk, blues and turn it into great Rock music. Anyone that argues where is the country in their songs... just count all the tracks with slide guitar and now when you re-listen to them you will clearly hear the country influence in them. For anyone that wants to re-discover new (old) STP music listen to this hidden gem of an album "Army of anyone" You will not skip a single song.

    I remember seeing them in concert back at in highschool at the Rosemont Horizon. Lol. Dennis Rodman of all people showed up on stage and Scott Weiland jumped up on him and rode his shoulders while singing his set.
    Also, people give Wieland a lot of credit for his singing (which he deserves) but the Deleo brothers on guitar and bass were the real heart of the band. A real guitar driven band, they were considered to be a return to form of classic rock like Led Zeppelin.
    Your commentary about the instrumentation seems to be picking up on that immediately.

    The key change in Sin before the opening riff is repeated is a great example of the confidence these guys had in their talent.
    One thing I never understood about labelling STP as grunge imitators is why it was a negative thing. So many bands that came up at the time "grunge" as a genre was being thrown around had admirable elements in their songwriting that jumped out at the listener as surprisingly mature.

    Loved this album. A lot of "experts" ripped it for trying to sound too much like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and the other heavyweights of the (in 1992) still active Grunge scene. While I have to admit that some of the songs (and especially Scott's vocal delivery) would give that kind of an impression, it still was able to exist within its own vacuum and proved very successful in sales and overall fan response, even if the "experts" didn't like it. You'll notice a shift to more of an alt-rock sound on the 1994's Purple and 1996's Tiny Music, although I wish they had stayed truer to this sound for a bit.
    Love the reaction, Molly, and thank you for another trip down memory lane! 🤘❤

    something i really appreciate about your reactions is that you do not put too much emphasis on lyrics and meaning of songs. i like to check out reaction video's so i can experience or witness the same excitement that I felt when first listening to a song. and generally lyrics are something that take more in depth analysis which to me is a bit decoupled from the idea of an experience of a reaction. I suppose the reason why i feel this way is because i think music or sounds / tones / are fundamental in the sense where I think that an arrangement of frequencies will have the exact same outcome no matter where in the universe they reside assuming that they have posses the same output. sort of like same software will have the same outcome no matter the hardware. where as lyrics are not fundamental at all. it's just an abstract reductionist representation a larger idea or thing that humans all agree upon. like saying the word CAT does not tell you about the color or size or breed of the cat. where as hearing an arrangement of sounds or tones or melodies of a MEOW will have the same truth no matter where it's projected out in the universe. the qualitative experience from experiencing those sounds or a cat MEOW related to the senses and awareness of the self.

      I think the squeaky guitar sound is achieved with a combination of: a chorus, a wah and maybe also a phaser while doing a chuga strumming pattern on muted strings. kind of if you just hold your wrist against the strings instead of pushing down a fret.
      also, definitely react to the next 2 or 3 STP records! the 1st 4 records by them are their best albums with my fav being the 2nd record!
      machina by smashing pumpkins is also an album to react to eventually.
      would be cool if you reacted to the downward spiral even though you already know that album!
      hypothetically: are you able to react to the new AURORA record?? or is her record label against full album reactions?
      same question but with the artist fever ray / the knife. as I rarely if ever see reactions to the fever ray / the knife records. (the singer is a woman from Sweden)

      Thanks so much! I really appreciate this comment, I've never been someone that pays much mind to the lyrics the first few times I'm hearing a song, so these videos I make never really touch too much on the lyrical content. And thanks for the suggestion about Wicked Garden, I'll have to give that live version a listen!

    If you're curious about the "squeaky noise" you mentioned in the video, it's an effect on guitar called harmonics where you rest your hand on the frets without playing a note and then strum it with lots of distortion to create a feedback sound. One of my favorite tricks too. Rock and metal guitarists in the 90's/00's especially did a lot of cool stuff with it that remains influential today.

So when you commented on the different feel between Creep and Piece of Pie, I was instantly reminded that Creep ended Side A of the tape. It's so nice to see the Stone Temple Pilots getting the recognition it deserves. This album is great. It's a real shame that in the early 90's they were panned being grunge copycats with idiotic arguments like a “only Seattle bands are allowed to play grunge” and other nonsense. The band was always unique in their sound with a jazz and psychadelic rock influences that become more evident on their next works.
    BTW their stuff after Scott Weiland's death is also noteworthy. They made an EP with a Chester Bennington on vocals called "High Rise". Albums with the current singer Jeff Gutt is good too.

    One of the best albums of the era. Critics panned it at the time but fans knew better. I still don't understand how they were ever accused of copying anyone's sound. Robert DeLeo's vast musical influences really gave them a signature sound imo, and Weiland's voice was so easy to listen to either clean or harsh. Superb song writing, interesting choices throughout. Definitely check out the Unplugged version of Creep, they switch up the intensity of the second verse and it's instant goosebumps as Scott belts out ".. think you're kind of neat" from a rocking chair. Their next two albums are also fantastic and the band comes into their own even more, but Core will always be my favorite. It's not overproduced or overwritten but it's also not as basic or paired down as some of the eras other debut acts. Super glad you enjoyed it!

    • @claymccoy

    • @dasninjastix
      @dasninjastix 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@claymccoy I'd have to go back but I think the criticism at the time was that Weiland was trying to be Vedder not Staley. I don't hear any Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam in STP though, never did, I think Wicked Garden gets the closest to the "Seattle Sound" and if anything the rhythm of it gives me the vibe of something from Soundgarden, but then it switches up on the pre-chorus to something that is its own thing. I just think it was always lazy editorializing. Their follow up album were proof positive (imo) that STP was more in line with The Pumpkins or REM in terms of their own alternative blend then they were copying trends.
