    This is the deepest discussion I have heard on the importance of why we should or should not speak patois/Jamaican versus the King’s English. Now more than before, I think Patois should be encouraged because it may be the only thing left that we can claim as our own as the politicians continue to sell out the country “while we stand aside and look… we got to fulfill the book.”

    Love, love this video! Jess, I think you did pretty well. I agree-Jamaican can definitely stand alone as a language. I also agree with Andre 100% that when I am mad, my first thoughts are in Jamaican. I am an educator in the US, and there are so many times I get upset around students and end up blurting out something in Jamaican. The kids just look at me, totally confused, and then I have to take a deep breath and explain in a way they can understand. Thank you so much for this video-well done!!!

    19:39 is so true!! I live uptown and went to an uptown high school but I only speak patios in my day to day life. Last year I was speaking to an older gentleman on the way home from school and he asked what am I doing currently and I said I'm going to college and his reaction was "You go to college and speak like that" which was just shocking to hear in the year 2023 because you will almost never hear such thing from the younger generation. I realized the stigma towards patios is really only still a thing among the older generations of the middle and upper class (and this is island wide but it's most prevalent uptown) as no one judged you for how you speak at even most uptown schools these days. Even the white, Asian and Indian kids at school were speaking patios. Your patios is excellent btw you're like 95% there lol.

    • @sjc3426
      @sjc3426 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe the older gentleman was saying this because If all you can speak is Jamaican patios, then one is limiting their communication skills only to other Jamaicans. Also, it significantly reduces the number of potential job opportunities available to you.

    • @SS.TheSupremeGentleman
      @SS.TheSupremeGentleman หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@sjc3426 I speak English very well, just choose not to. Just like Jamaicans who choose not to speak patios but that doesn't mean they don't understand it or can't speak it as well. If you're born into a bilingual society 99% of the time you understand both languages and I've never came across a Jamaican who doesn't understand what I'm saying. People just choose to speak the language they're most comfortable speaking as their everyday language then code-switch whenever it's necessary, this goes for any multilingual society.

      You are absolutely correct. I remember dating a fellow Jamaican, both of us from rural areas, but we met in kingston. He told me 1 thing he didn't like about me was that I talked bad. I explained that I'm in my comfortable space with him that's why my go to language is patois. But in other settings I speak standard English. Suffice it to say, I never felt the same about that person, always walking on egg shells around him, no longer felt like I was in a safe space. Relationship eventually fizzled out.

    Thank You. Persevere in learning to speak Jamaican. You are getting closer to your goal. One thing that I don't think has been mentioned is that Jamaicans often switch between speaking Jamaican and English, wherever in the world they happen to reside. Even the so-called uptown people speak Jamaican, some openly, and others when they think you are not listening. I am a Jamaican who has lived in England for decades. The Jamaican language is often my comfort blanket, particularly when I am angry. I have two sons who were born in England, and they love to speak Jamaican and were self-taught.

    Pretty good. I am Jamaican who left @ 12 years old. You are doing better at communicating in Jamaica than I would if I had to do this in Jamaica. I can understand Jamaican, but speaking it fluently would be a bit harder. However, when I returned for 3 weeks, a few years ago I started to retain my fluency. So I think I would regain my fluency if I was immersed in society.

    Our colonial masters did an awesome job diminishing everything special about Jamaica, telling us our language was broken/bad English. It’s actually a very complex and special dialect. Hearing you trying to speak patois , though u did a decent job, makes me realize how special and difficult the language is to command. I agree Jamaican language should be an official thing. I grew up being told that speaking patois meant I was less, uneducated even poor. We have to eradicate that type of negative stereotypes around Jamaica culture and embrace our uniqueness. Miss u Jess. Come back 🇯🇲soon

    Hey Jess !!!🥰😘
    It’s so good to see you back. Missed you terribly, terribly, terribly !!! 😭😭😭
    I’m Jamaican, and have been making the case for our language to be embraced for the beautiful means of communication that it is.
    The most resistance that I encounter is from the generation that is in their 60’s or older.
    As your guest said, “Old habits die hard”.
    But mi nah go mek dat discourage mi.
    Big up yuself, Jess.
    We love yu, bad❤️❤️🇯🇲

    It's only Jamaicans who refer to broken English or improper English, etc., as the Jamaican language. Other countries would not refer to Patois as a bad language. Jamaican language is popular in the Caribbean and around the world.

      That’s because Jamaicans for the most part are still living in colonial times mentally, they love the slave masters language,just as they love the colonial masters religion and way of life , the average Jamaican still waiting on the slave master Jesus to come save dem

      Correction: It's only misinformed or illiterate Jamaicans who refer to it as broken language

    You are at about the intermediate level with a VERY, VERY, VERY heavy accent. I understand and speak Patois but couldn't understand what you were saying half the time. But I applaud your effort. I am impressed that you were able to learn so much

    It needs to be held in a higher regard for real. You have done justice, my dear. You're really contributing and I love it. Thanks for your respect.
    A synonym for nosey can be 'nof' like the same word for 'a lot', e.g a nof rien faal yestide ino/it rained a lot yesterday.
    Yu tuu nof! / you're so inquisitive or nosey.
    JESS! What would be interesting is if you learnt the Cassidy writing system of the Jamaican Language. Are you very familiar with it? Either way, thanks for the respect towards us and great video.
