it's natural to say this car is ''slow'' when you drive supercars every day :) :)
They are 'fast, slow cars'. Ive had loads of cars (over 40), some with very big power, and also 20+ of Ducati superbikes.
The R53 isn't really about wild acceleration, it's about handling and sustained corner speed. The cars can be modded to make about 240-250hp at the wheels...17% pulley, colder plugs, bigger I/C, cam and 550cc injectors, decent manifold..some go for a +2% crank pulley too. On a healthy engine that'll give you a 'quick' car that will punch well above it's weight and on a country lane, will be as fast as cars with more than double the power.
Mate is a 2% pulley better then the 17%?

Best BMW Mini, as far as reliability goes. Top marks for reliability go to the older model classic Mini. By the 90's even they had some electrical issues.

Funny he keeps mentioning the lack of power. Max torque for this car is at 6950 rpm. He keeps short shifting so never gets max power.

Anyone who has driven a r53 knows the power is at redline because of the supercharger, different story to a turbo engine.

I bought Cooper S for 2500 Euros...I love the car...I am hardcore Bmw fan and was looking to buy f10 e60 e39 e65 e46 e90 etc...but then I went and bought the Cooper S and the car is such a fun to drive...AMAZING

It's not "fast" but it's fun as hell without losing your license. I'd argue it's more fun to drive everyday than a heavy 800 hp AMG coupe that you have to restrain yourself 95% of the time not to lose your license.

I agree . I had a 270bhp Merc but I sold it and bought another Mini Cooper S . So much more fun .
Sixth gear never got any love while cruising.
I am a R53 owner and have driven both R56 and F56. But I still love the rawness of the R53, eventhough the new ones are sure faster.

Had a r53 from 2005, great car to drive, the exausht pops were unreal, only drawback was the fuel economy, which there wasn't! 15 L /100km.
Stay below 2500rpm but yes... I cant do much better either

I have a 2006 "true" jcw and nobody believes me when I tell them it's fuel efficiency is nonexistent lol. It's awful!
I sold this Mini model at the BMW dealer when it came out in Holland. I was at the introduction in a old factory in Maarssen. It was a total hit. Man that cooper S with the jcw kit was awesome to drive! I Almost bought one 2 years ago but got a good deal on a 130i instead. Anyway nice video!

all the car needs is an engine rebuild and it'll be back to its former glory these are literally the only bmw minis i like the newer ones ain't for me as again gen 1 was the best and still is the best to date

From the looks of it, all the horses are still there….. I never lost power in my Cooper S r53 and it had done 120k miles…..probably used to the turbo kick of other fast cars rather than the linear power

It may not be as fast as modern GTI, especially a tuned one, but it's more than quick enough and infinitely more fun to drive than a GTI. I've owned both, and while the GTI is much faster, it isn't nearly as engaging to drive. The comfort and refinement of the GTI is a godsend for everyday commutes as a MINI will grate on your nerves over every pothole or stoplight. The GTI is great at "turning off" and just cruising on a commute, whereas a MINI is "always on" just begging you to do something stupid. It's a love hate relationship but the MINI unquestionably more fun.

It’s a 220 bhp car after the upgrades and you took it on the autobahn like an idiot and kept saying it’s not fast. Obviously it’s a 200bhp which you need to revel to at least 7000 rpm to fully enjoy it and open her up. Tbh after watching that I think you don’t really know a lot about cars. You just take high performance motors on the autobahn and that’s about it

True that, after a few months and a new cam it proved te have 213bhp. It’s top horsepower is right at the redline and it likes to rev up to it to!

True, i have a R53 Cooper S and i am a race driver, Profesional in karting and racing in cars like a Bmw 325I with Turbokit up to 350hp with 500nm torque, i already heard rumors that the cooper S and JCW were fast but when i drove in it it really goed fast, the cornering is better that 80% of the other track cars and almost redlining the engine really gets all the power out wich is really enough to get that light mini going my point is that is just so much fun and it’s really fast tho
idk if i'll get a response & this is probably a stupid question, but what's the higher pitch 'whining' sound when accelerating? i've had my r50 for a few weeks now (first time owning a mini in general) and it does that sound too but not sure what it is😂

Wonder what would happen if you put it on a Dyno to see if it's still producing full power. I suspect it probably is 200hp in a super charged engine sure doesn't feel as quick as 200hp in a Turbo engine.
Could u tell me please , I have the same version of jcw 2005 model , and I wanted to make it more louder. Absolutely the same exhaust but it seems yours is modified. What do I need to do? Shall I just cut all catalyst and make it straight pipe or what? Please waiting for your reply. Thanks a lot!

You should, the R53 is so much fun to drive, no comparison with the newer ones, those are no longer go-karts. They will need serious continuous maintenance though, a price I'm willing to pay for a smile on my face every time I floor it.

This is the only Mini Cooper S that I've seen that you can't hear the supercharger whine from. What's up with that?
Exhaust noise is mostly drowning out the supercharger sound. I would much rather the sc noise than exhaust noise!!
An alta cold air intake will make the supercharger whine significantly loader, the supercharger whine is actually loader than the standard exhaust.

They are definitely gonna be slow on the autobahn. More of a back road touge car.

Actually I have na 1.6 cooper 2003 and what I see its as fast as mine XD I make air come better to engine, and in tank I have Shell V-Power Nitro Plus + little bit RE85 (85% ethanol). And mine back pipe has rusted off and have dropped it all XD but mine is about 8.5s 0-100, maybe better if start is perfect ;) last time was perfect start and it when even maybe near 7s!! And I really mean natural aspired 1.6, without any supercharger or turbo!!!!! And what I see in this video, Id say mine is as fast. :)
Watching this guy doing a review was like having red hot pins being put in my eyes , he seemed to know fk all about the car ,TBH I don't think he actually liked the mini the way he was describing it ,oh by the way he kept calling it a old school mini ... its not its modern mini old school mini are from the 60s.

I like about modern Minis that they don't make those cheap noises. I mean, this car sounds like a plastic bag. Some knocks here, some hisses there, it sounds really bad. I'd fear that the car just breaks and those old Minis are indeed of very low quality. Compared to the big cars we have nowadays, the modern Minis still feel very handy and direct. But they're grown up now, you can definitely use them for longer distances, the built quality is on BMW level, everything is just a bit better for everyday use. No doubt, those old Minis were pure and fun, more direct and all. But I'd choose a modern Mini over them everytime.
The new ones are shit. It's like comparing a range rover sport with a series 1 land rover , series 1 wins everytime , now sod off.

I can't agree with you. Next gen (R56) - yes, there were PSA engines and had many issues (they were kinda badly designed) but this one (Tritec engine) is extremely durable.
