Toyota 22RE oil consumption finally solved? Valve cover oil baffle PCV cleaning removal upgrade

  • This video covers upgrading / modifying the PCV oil baffle inside the valve cover on my 1990 Toyota Pickup w/ 22RE. I'll update how oil consumption has changed here soon (see update below).
UPDATE: So far, it doesn't seem like this modification has made any impact on oil draw into the PCV system. I'm starting to think my motor might have total seal rings lol. I removed the small amount of green paint stripper material from the hose between the PCV breather and the PCV valve (it was about 1" worth) and oil consumption into the catch can has risen (I just checked the oil catch can and there was 30 ml after 37.8 miles). So the search continues as to why the PCV system is pulling so much oil up through the breather. I'll update further if I figure anything out.

Glad to know it wasnt related to the timing chain conversion ... or maybe I should wait to watch the final video on this issue. SO glad you decided to document and share your 22RE journey, very helpful.

I finally traced the oil consumption to the previous owner (before I purchased the truck) installing the incorrect sized piston rings. Also the LCE oil passage in their head was too small and needed to be opened up. Check some of the more recent videos on the channel and I cover some of it during the 2nd engine tear down and rebuild.

Never realized that’s where that gasket in the kit went. I wrote it off as maybe something used for a carb application haha

you and me both! :) I'm just about to test drive the truck, so I should have a feeling for how it's doing shortly here.

Seems like some valve covers that plate is bolted from the factory, don't remember the years though. One thing to consider as well is no amount of baffling will stop blow by. I am very curious to see if you get any change.

Thanks for the info. I'm still fooling around with different PCV configurations along with that extended breather/baffle. I just came in from tweaking it and I'm waiting for an adjustable PCV valve to arrive on Friday. So I should have an update video soon here.

I'd love to know if this worked for you. I'm fighting a similar problem.

Didn't really seem to make a lot of difference either way. It all seems to be related to how much suction there is at the PCV. Too much and it causes the oil to crawl up the walls of everything and go into the PCV system. Too little and the engine doesn't run as well as it could. It's a very fine balancing act and I think removing the stock smog stuff exacerbates the problem.

What type oil is suitable for this machin 22r please??

Usually any 10W40 is fine. You wanna add some Lucas ZDDP to boost up the zinc a bit, since it's a flat tappet camshaft. Here's the oil I run, as well as 8 oz of the ZDDP stuff:
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CPL952G
      www.amazon.com/dp/B001DKN8ZU
That oil with 8 oz (half bottle) of the Lucas ZDDP should get you to around 4500 ppm of zinc in the oil as I rememer. I've also had real good luck with this oil:
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008QDXADW
If you use the Valvoline, I'd suggest adding in more like 12 oz of the ZDDP.
