- Someone on the channel was asking about the current status of the oil catch can and if I ever figured out why it was filling up so rapidly. This video addresses that question as well as some of the past oil consumption issues I was having on the 22RE as well.
Thanks Ray, That's great info for our 22R engines.
This is great!!! So glad you got all that worked out!!! Amazing how you tracked it all down, found working solutions .. AND shared with us, thanks 1M
Thanks! yeah it was a long road.
Ray thanks so much for the update. Are you aware of anyone who sells a sort of "engine bay hose/rubber replacement kit" for the 22re? All my engine rubber is basically rotten at this point and I'm not sure I want to buy it all piece by piece.
LC Engineering sells a kit of hoses. 22RE performance also probably does. YotaShop should have it. Stick to rubber hoses (not silicone). I believe I got most of my hoses from LCE and then I bought a few of the big ones directly from amazon or here toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota.com/v-1990-toyota-pickup--base--2-4l-l4-gas
@@ray5961 much appreciated, thank you.
Just dumped the oil catch can today for my 230k mile ‘94 22RE. Wasn’t full, but there was a thick oily peanut butter sludge in the bottom of it. This was the first time I’ve opened the catch can (not including dumping it; the entire top and bottom of this cheapo can unbolts from the center section) and wasn’t expecting to see that.
Engine runs great and consumes a lot of oil. Need to add about 0.4 quart every time I fill up.
Peanut butter could indicate water in the oil perhaps. When was the last time you changed the oil? I would check under the oil filer cap and see if there is any signs of water/oil under there.
Thoughts on converting this awesome 22re to a 22rte the factory turbo version of this motor?
@@Jus-k2m I'm building a 3RZ turbo for the truck down the road. I think the 3RZ has some benefits over the 22RE design as far as flow and performance, as well as durability of the block.
Any Content for 3rz?
@@Jus-k2m The 3RZ block is still sitting next to my desk. Probably won't be any real content on that motor build for a few years.
Really enjoy your videos
thanks man! I enjoy making them
I have a LCE head so i be checking on that
Yes, definitely something to check. I show the hole in a couple of videos (both before and also after opening it). One video shows it when I'm looking around at the hole while the head is on the motor and then when I rebuild the motor and do the ceramic pistons, I show the head and hole very clearly after using a carbide burr to open it up.
Where did you get the catch can and bracket from ?
The catch can came from amazon - they sell a bunch of them on there. The specific one I have is made by Evil Energy as I recall. They have ones with and without a breather setup up on top; the breather stuff is not needed for EFI motors. I made the bracket from 10mm thick black ABS and used some stainless coupling nuts as stand offs. I think I might have a video on the channel where I show it in more detail and list the part # for the SS coupling nuts. Made the bracket template from cardboard, then just cut and drill the ABS and used some files and rasps to shape it. The oil catch can is held on by a Velcro strap. I ditched the little "oil dip stick" nonsense on the catch can.. it's totally worthless for reading the level and the tiny O-ring of the dipstick can leak air and really F up your day. I just put an M6 bolt in that hold and put thread lock on it.
I have a 1991 Toyota pickup with 22 R-E, But my distributor is off set at the back. Why is this?
Usually the distributor should lock down with the bolt in the mid part of the adjustment range. If you mean it's fully rotated to the end of the slot, that usually means someone installed the cam 1 tooth off by mistake.
