I took the head bolts out before I took the sprocket off. I haven't taken it off yet. Will it ok? If so what size of wood do I jam down there to hold the chain in place?
I would put a few bolts back in before I I tried to take the sproketboff because it could allow slack in the chain, in order to build your own tool it 2 1/4 wide at yhe top 3 1/2 inchs long and 1 1/2 inchs wide at the bottom. fixer good quick update thanks to your video I changed the head gasket it’s my first time doing anything like this. I also changed the timing chain as well. Thanks again for the videos.
I loosened my belt and my pants dropped to the floor.🤪🥺 Seriously, I pulled in and parked. When I came back and tried to start her (no spark) I finally (after I saw my rotor wasn’t moving) I lifted the valve cover to see I was missing my timing chain! Shoot!! I have No Idea if the pistons hit the valves or not. Will remove the head. Will have to manually position the distributor. Make sure piston is in top position, lower pulley is at TDC and both rockers are loose (don’t touch the rocker adj. nuts till she is running). Does that sound correct or did I miss something?
good video - you had some helpful tips. Note that the head can become warped if the bolts are not evenly released per the shop manual. I see you added that on the tightening for it on part 2 tho - thanks for posting. Also I had a lot of fun pressing out an '83 hilux rear axle shaft recently, that might be a good topic too.

Great Video but I'm wondering how you know you might need a Head Gasket. I have an '86 4x4 Toyota Truck and it looks like fluid, maybe Radiator Fluid, is coming out my exhaust when starting. What are the initial signs you would see to indicate a Head Gasket needs replaced.
Well the first sign would be your truck over heating quickly after start up, possablly lots of white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. In some cases you can check the radiator for exhaust gases with a die tool that changes colors when you have a blown head gasket. I have a 1987 Toyota motorhome with the 22re It’s been overheating after running about 10 15 or 20 minutes I check the compression and they were all pretty close between 65 and 85 I was just wondering after that seem low to you? It’s a rebuilt motor and head and I thought the compression should be higher. I’m working on the intake manifold And I noticed I had some blown gaskets between the head and the intake so I’m replacing that. Thanks again for your information.
Having an issue with bolting the exhaust side back to head. All the studs that hold it seem to go in different lengths because the nut is rather fixed to the stud after all these years, and not tightening up like they may be striped out. Should I get new ones and put them in as deep as possible or should I tap the threads for a larger stud?
The colts are diffrent lengths the bolt s fir the middle brace or egr uppe are diffrent from the four on the sides. Once you get the studs in the whole the nuts break free most the time , or you can get new bolts. I would not recomend taping to a bigger size hole this helps besure to like and subscribe for more tips.
@@fixergood The nuts are somewhat seized onto the studs by rust but I never tried to separate them, I had not realized that the 4 on the sides had different lengths than the ones in the middle. If I can't get the bolt and stud separated to insert it deeper, I will get a few new studs to bottom out in their holes before adding the nuts and torque.
That sucks man those bolts are on super tight and they come out hard the bolts I had were after market so maybe they were 18mm and others are 17, I will put a note in the video,thanks for watchin
I didn't think it was possible for a person to "not know" when a socket doesn't fit a nut or bolt. Simpy place the socket on the bolt and turn side to side to see if it's tight. If it's tight you have the right tool, if not try a smaller size, and use 6 corner sockets if possible and available.
Can you please answer 1 question? Can I put my old Rocker Arm assembly on my New Head? Seems like it’s better/cheaper to buy a New Head (has New valves, guides, Crankshaft but no rocker arm assembly) than have a machine shop rebuild my old head.

Thanks for watchin head bolts need to be replaced everytime. There called torque to yield bolts, that means they torque to a certain clamping force not torque measurement . The spanner is just cam spanner uou csn find on amazon. If you go there the comments I theres one where I have put measurements for the wood block I'll highlight it thanks again for watchin. I replaced the intake manifold hoping that was it, but it's still doing the same thing. No oil in coolant, no bubbles in radiator, no coolant in oil. Does this sound like a blown head gasket? @@YouCantWin666 has the truck ever over heated, do you have a thermostat in it? Is it white smoke or blue. If it hasent over heated or consumed coolant t it's hard to say head gasket. If the smoke is blue it could be bad valve stem seals or bad rings hope this helps you.
@@fixergood the truck has never over heated, The coolant is going down, Its white smoke. It has a thermostat. Coolant can only be getting in the combustion chamber from the intake manifold or head gasket, right?I'm thinking maybe the head gasket is just 38 years old and is falling apart from age?
Great video, question on the block for the chain. Where does that block go I cant see it in the video. Also what does it do? keep the chain from falling down? do you need the block on the 22re? Thanks!
The block puts tension against the chain tensioner which makes it so the chain wont fall down into the oil pan and keeps it in place so it will go back on cam when going back togather.
Hey I'm about to replace the head gasket on my 94 pickup . Its not burning or leaking any oil only using up the coolant pretty bad, also sometimes when I turn the car on , usually it turns on no problem but every now nd then I have to hit the gas or else the engine won't start. Also sometimes, when I shift to reverse, it turns off on me and I have to turn it back on .

I’ve got a predicament: I have a 1994 Toyota pickup with the 22R-E and I believe the heat gasket is leaking. Here’s why: it bubbles out of the radiator, it loses coolant, it is underpowered when cold, it smokes pretty bad out of the exhaust before it’s warmed up, and there’s coolant coming out of the radiator, but it passed the head gasket leak test with the blue fluid. The fluid didn’t turn yellow so I don’t know if I did that wrong or if it’s something else

Fixer good, hey bro I got my head's back and I installed them I'm in the process of looking up the exhaust manifold. I noticed another thicker gasket for the plate that's on the rear of the heads "egr cooler" when I got my gasket kit I only noticed a thinner gasket for that plate which I installed already. Now I stared opening my manifold gasket and I noticed another one for the rear plate and much thicker. I already have a gasket on there. What do I do???? I hate to pull these heads off again.
I think what your asking is if the thinner gasket is suitable if you have a thicker one available. I would try it you can teach the back plate with out taking the head off, you may just have to move some pipes. The one I currently have has been swamped twice. Just pulled the plugs and rolled it over then changed the oil. The last time it was in the mud hole for three weeks before I was able to get it out.
So I took my head's in to get resurfaced and a valve job. The machinist called me back and said it didn't pass the pressure test because the heads we're warped. So he is going to weld an extra plate and the have it resurfaced again. What are the chances my engine block is also warped?
When ever I've done the head on a 22r the blocks are usually pretty solid and are not warped. If you got it really hot or suspect it is you can buy a straight edge and place it on the block and see if has any high spots. Focus could be better. There is a bolt that holds the head to the timing chain cover. Please include removing that bolt. It is critical. Also please state the head bolt removal sequence, to avoid warping the head, it may be unlikely, but it can happen. Otherwise ok, so thanks for this video.

fixer good finally got everything in to do the head gasket I removed the 8 intake bolts but it still does not want to come off.

Your compression ses a little low you usually like to see 120 psi or higher for good comprrssion,or uniformed compresion od 90 across. Hope this helps

Those bolts holding down the rocker arms need a 17mm socket. I used an 18mm like you said and it rounded off the corners. So, thanks for that.

How did you remove that hidden bolt that you pointed out on the intake manifold side. I’m having a hard time getting to that bolt
