  • Which vector editing software is right for you? In this 10 points comparison, we do a brief review of Adobe Illustrator vs. Affinity Designer 2.0 Both of these programs are great for making vector art, but each one has its own strengths and weaknesses.

I have been using Affinity Designer for the last 7 years and it's fantastic software I never require Adobe Illustrator for any Job which I can't do with Affinity Designer, regarding tracing there are many free alternatives like Inkscape where you can easily trace the image and 2.0 version made affinity much more powerful.

When it comes to vector tracing, there are at least two reasons to do it. The first is that you're tracing something which has a million colors and you might want to be able to enlarge it for print. In that case, there are probably lots of programs that can do that because it is very forgiving. The other reason to trace is that you are needing to accurately reproduce a design. That is where these tracing programs differ, and that is why a program like Vector Magic costs $300.00 and all it does it trace. In my work, I'm looking for accuracy 100% of the time. I haven't found a free solution that is good for that.

    I use Affinity Designer for:
    - Logo Design
    - Some Stationery associated with the brand I designed the Logo for
    - Dashboards' Mockups
And it works really well for me. So I think that instead of comparing features, the workflows should be compared instead

What about a review of CorelDRAW, Inkscape or Vectornator in the near future?

Price comparison only makes sense if both products are equal. The cheaper product can't be a better deal if it has less stuff in the box.

Good comparison and I would agree about the auto trace and 3d tools. However I would also add two other features Ai and Inkscape have which are lacking in Affinity Designer. The first would be vector pattern along a path or curve. This could be achieved by having brushes that use a vector object instead of a raster image. To create intertwined thorns along a path I had to create the pattern, convert to a png and make a brush, and then draw the curve and finally retrace it back to a vector. The other would be object blend.

I agree about auto trace, vector pattern along a path & blends. For these I use Inkscape. I often use blends *as* patterns along a path. This can create a color gradient along a path. I can use another pattern along a duplicate path & then create a clipping path to create a multi-color true vector brush. I use pattern along a path & blend much more often than I would auto trace in a single project. These would be more important to integrate into Affinity to reduce cutting & pasting. Using Inkscape for auto tracing is only a bit more work than, say, exporting a png from an external raster editor.

@@jktolford8272 hm I thought Affinity has the option vector along path. Saw a tut yesterday

@@DieTabbi I've had hardware & software issues for a while & been running Linux much of the time. If Affinity Designer has a true vector along path it is a *new* feature since my comment. I'll have to check.
What Affinity *has* had is a feature *they* call a 'vector brush.' This bends a gray scale *raster* ( 8-bit bit map) *image* (which can be colorized) along a *vector* path. Not the same as bending a true vector path along another true vector path. Both have their advantages & weaknesses, but not the same thing. Which tut by whom, BTW? I find them useful.

Affinity Revolution was a super important channel for V1 so many new affinity users were able to switch from AI thanks to them teaching about this new affordable and unknown program called Affinity Designer, unfortunately, they didn't cover much V2 content so far

Good review. Also Adobe updated TOS. You now agree or dont use the software and Adobe's AI can scrape ALL your work (Steal your work) and sell it/use it/monetise for what ever they want. You no longer own the work you create.

Price is not the critical point. Your personal needs is the critical point. If you needed the more expensive product then then cheaper one would not even be an option.

@KuttyJoe if it would be $250 once, and not every year, perhaps more people would buy it. Not even as a corporation would I buy that subscription bs.

Adobe's tools have a different "feel" compared to Affinity. I'm not quite sure how to explain it. Those of you who used both of them know what I'm talking about. When you get down to which is better, I think it's simply a matter of preference. Of course when you're working to suit the needs of the client and they specifically require AI files and not Affinity, then your hands are tied and you might end up owning both. At least with Affinity you're not subject to subscription headaches and both platforms update themselves.

Artificial intelligence has begun to tip the balance back in favor of the giant corporation. But Adobe İllustrator's interface is still ugly. It definitely misses the designer's inspiration. MX Freehand was more inspiring.

For now, but they are planning (or maybe already implemented) a limit for AI and they are keeping it behind a huge pay paywall, sadly.
