Yah most fighting games suffer from this in tournaments. Smash Bros Melee has a meme "no items, fox only, final destination" for a reason. MvC2 had Magneto, storm, sentinal.
I disagree they shouldn’t even have bothered with tag/assist systems period😭 stick to 1v1. That’s my personal opinion at least, don’t get me wrong I can tolerate and even have some fun with Kameos, but at the end of the day I just enjoy true, traditional 1v1 best. I don’t want teammates, I don’t want assists, I don’t want to worry about mix and matching my kameo or whatever I just wanna pick my main and fight. I know being creative and mix and matching is the fun for some people, but everyone at this point knows the top tier kameos so obviously those get the most picked and it gets boring to play AND watch. I also just don’t wanna learn every kameo just let me learn my character. That’s obviously on me, but at the same time I think it just goes to show I’m not a big fan of the mechanic. Again, I can tolerate it, even force myself to enjoy it at times but do I enjoy it over traditional mk? No, hell no😭

Exactly especially Mileena, like why the hell, out of all the years Of kombat history, you nerf the distance of her projectiles, and she has to charge to teleport kick or ground roll, you can easily counter it and her wake ups and combo starters/mix ups are trash, meanwhile everybody is broken or spam

I feel like injustice 1 and 2 were good for its time period. It’s considered outdated today but back then it was a fun game with a good storyline. Mk1 is pretty much injustice with Mk characters and its lore with a bunch of unnecessary microtransactions.
I stopped after mk9. Mkx and 11 made me glad I quit. New mk1 just makes me glad I stopped investing in this franchise. Just wish people could let go at times.
Same here. Been 20+ years of buying these games. Made the decision not to buy it even with returning characters to look forward to because I knew this kameo system was gonna be stupid OP. The moment the first trailers came out, I was like "NOPE".

The viewership for the tournament was pretty bad as well. It stuck around the 10 to 12K range. Other fighting games for their finals have at the very least more than 3 to 4 times that.

@@TheBanished_Gaming Competitors, and repetition like this. MKX was a golden child, for all of it's problems there was still massive amounts of content, and great characters to learn. MK11 still kept that content, but they fucked up the fighting, however the player base was still loyal. Here though with something like this, having 591 recurring streams compared to the thousands your competitors have over is only going to hurt the pockets in the long run. Mortal Kombat isn't a monopoly, they have SF and Tekken to contend with. And even though both of those games have been out, they clearly attract and maintain more players than MK. If ED were to just laugh to the bank, he'd start questioning why the check is getting lower. Because with shit like this, the player base is dropping.

Not only did you make a legitimate counter argument to my comment but you also made me question my own position on the subject. I too find it hard to see any situation where Ed or WB can continue in the direction they are currently taking with MK1 and have any hope of retaining much more of the fanbase. Tekken 8 and SF6 both stumbled on their way as well but they were able to recover far quicker than MK1. I say that feciously because MK1 has yet to recover from several issues that plagued it from day 1. I find it utterly ridiculous that a KP2 and story expansion are still in the pipeline to be released given the fact that the player base has been reduced to a shell of what it has been in previous titles, as you said streams are almost non existent because the fans find the game boring, and the players find it boring. Adding more characters and content is the last thing they need to focus on. Fixing the game itself first then adding more content should be the way they go. Like I said earlier I have not seen a response like yours that was well thought out and full of facts in a long time and it was refreshing to see.
I'm also a lifelong fan. Started with MK in the arcades, every home console port, all the way through the 3D and era up to present. It definitely saddens me that I haven't truly loved an MK game since X. For better or for worse that's the last time I remember genuinely being exciting not just play, but also watch, learn from tech videos, and anticipate who was gonna show off a previously slept on character or variation. I hope I can regain that excitement again one day about MK 😢
Yeah bro Broseph was a top tier Quan Chi. But most of the tournament that was fun for me because of Ninja, Broseph, Kani, and zeeus. Those guys in my opinion were the life of the party. Everyone else was so boring and bland. And...too much peacemaker😭😭

When homelander got a move that changes properties based on counter hit I screamed at Ed boon that every character should have a normal and a special move that does that

Visually and design wise it's 100% worse that's what I'm missing the most I don't like the charecter design and I don't like the DLC they're too kids friendly and dumb looking..
@@tsvetelin6556i won't say kid friendly,more nothing special like all the dlc1 characters from street fighter 6 have their own identity and doesn't clash each other out since their gameplay are competely different. Mk1 dlc have 2 superman clone and 3 returned character that 2 of them should have been in the main roster bc they already shown in the main story and play parts of it. The only one that's remotely interesting is Peacemaker bc he do more than just 1-2 same combo and doesn't relied on Kameo to do high damage combo

I still don't understand why they can't just give awesome tools to all the characters... If having a 6 frame mid makes Johnny so good, why can't everyone have a 6 frame mid? If having star power makes Johnny broken, why can't everybody have a star meter? I could go on... why is this even a thing?
Because then every character would be the same and that’d be boring. The biggest problem with MK11 and MK1 is that they’re taking away character archetypes and it’s making the game very watered down and boring.
It's a shame to create 30ish characters and close to 20 Kameos with 90% of them being ignored. They should want to do something about that. Not just nerfing the top characters but buffing others so people will want to use them.
Textbook example as to why gamebalance is important. The casuals see this and either lose interest in the game or start playing only the small selection of characters on display. You can't hide bad balance anymore.

I’ve since been playing it and haven’t got bored , always getting the tick to get back on mk1 but I resist it , there’s nothing hype about it anymore ,just expecting to lose in a scrubby way or just by a top 3 tier character without any counter picking lol
MK9 was the best for me..MKX was a good continuation even though I had issues with it.. but thats personal bias against run, variations and the UI design etc. I'm picky for what "Mortal Kombat" is to me. Watching MK Tom Brady Mk9 and MKX subzero was the shit though.

Mk1 is a let down I gave up after 1 month... It was fun but got repetitive... On the final... I always thought they should got rid of fatal blows but comparing thus tournament to when sonic cane back against ninja in that final when ninja got 3 blows in one round.. That was way more entertaining than mk1.... Kameos make everything too safe
MK1 in general is awful to watch. They really lost the plot with this game. I wish WB would just let NRS go. That way, if we ever did get another MK game, it won't be made by the current developers.
Great video and content as always. You hit the nail on the head yet again. The only reason why I even bothered watching Final Kombat this past weekend was because I enjoy the SonicFox and NinjaKilla rivalry but mainly to see if another character besides Johnny or Peacemaker would win. I was so disappointed when people that didn’t use those characters lost. I even got excited when I watched an Ashrah player win the LCQ. After this season of DLC is done I’m going to just let the game collect dust in my PC library. I’m just gonna do the combo trials (yet again) and once I’m done with them I’ll be uninstalling the game immediately. I have never played MK competitively but it has always been the game I enjoyed playing outside of the games that I actually do play competitively. Keep up the good work and I will continue to support you and your content. Idgaf how the MK community sees you. All that matters to me is how I see you and to me you’re one of the unsung heroes within that community.
Sad part is, I wouldn't want Khameleon nerfed. She is the only kameo that people tend to use her entire kit and the way people play changes depending on which form she is currently in. No other kameo can say that. It's unsafe move into special and every single person plays this way. And that in and of itself is not an issue. The problem, is that they have several other moves in their arsenal. Yet they are never ever used. The main character isn't even the main character. The kameo doesn't even matter. The kameo move is what is being selective, then everything forms around that one singular move.
I think NRS will not change his "yes man" policy cause they don't care about the competitive scene like other companies. They know 2025 will announce the new game for 2026 so mk1 sales are already done. Next game is their priority now. Great video btw.
The problem is that: A) - you’re expecting rationality from a lot of extremely irrational people. & B) - you are expecting things to change from a company that has outright refused to do so at every single opportunity given to them. And because NRS won’t change, then sadly the poor quality content made directly by them won’t change. This franchise is dead, and they’re willfully burning it up the ground. It’s time to let Mortal Kombat die and move something else. Because at this point, it’s painfully obvious that those working at NRS, including Crazy Ed himself, are closed minded and simply don’t care. The only way this franchise can ever truly be salvaged is if they give the rights back to John Tobias since it’s *his* creation and not Ed’s, fire Ed Boon completely and his entire team, remove *all* games from Deadly Alliance up until now from canon and *only* keep MK 1-4 plus Mythologies as canon, and do a completely new story with John writing it. But that’s just never going to happen. So, unfortunately, we are at an impasse with this colossal mess of a franchise. And the numbers are showing quite clearly that it’s beyond dead.

NRS balancing fighters and kameos is laughable at this point they have no idea what there doing. I don't mind kameos but balancing them so ones aren't strongest and weakest would help

It really feels like most people can't conceive that criticism comes from a place of love for the franchise. Most content creators I've seen who don't have surface level criticism towards NRS, always mention how much they love the franchise. Often including mk9 and mkx.

Tom, what would you say for the idea of Kameos being usable like Fatal Blows - something like... 2 times a game or even spread it by 1 use per round. Even if they raise the impact of the Kameo, make them OP AF, but usable twice per match. Then we'll have the mindgames of "is he gonna cover their a$$ with Kameo, or not" and we won't have to see constant safety caused by broken and spammable Kameos.

I absolutely agree with you 150%! I just made a video talking about how I felt about Final Kombat last night and it essentially mirrored everything you said here. So out of 513 possible teams that they could have chose from, the competitors only chose 2 teams for 95% of the entire top 8... With Homelander there are 532 potential teams to play with... But even then only 2 teams are viable for pro competition. Ridiculous... absolutely ridiculous. They really need to bring the other characters to the level of Johnny and Peacemaker to where they can stand on their own. They also just need to redesign the Kameo characters so they can match the recharge rate of Khameleon and have the same amount of tools that she gives to the characters.
Everything mentioned in this video is, in my opinion, what is starting to become prevalent everywhere. Gaslighting the already corrupt powers in order to stay popular and make a profit, while the true people get to watch their favorite franchises fail. As a Star Wars fan as well, it is kind of sad lol

I’ve said this from the start.. the Kameo system turned off the majority of MK players from this game. It just simply doesn’t feel like an MK game. They need to go back to their roots.

MKX was a golden child, for all of it's problems there was still massive amounts of content, and great characters to learn.
MK11 still kept that content, but they fucked up the fighting, however the player base was still loyal.
Here though with something like this, having 591 recurring streams compared to the thousands your competitors have over is only going to hurt the pockets in the long run.
Mortal Kombat isn't a monopoly, they have SF and Tekken to contend with. And even though both of those games have been out, they clearly attract and maintain more players than MK. If ED were to just laugh to the bank, he'd start questioning why the check is getting lower. Because with shit like this, the player base is dropping.

Not only did you make a legitimate counter argument to my comment but you also made me question my own position on the subject. I too find it hard to see any situation where Ed or WB can continue in the direction they are currently taking with MK1 and have any hope of retaining much more of the fanbase. Tekken 8 and SF6 both stumbled on their way as well but they were able to recover far quicker than MK1. I say that feciously because MK1 has yet to recover from several issues that plagued it from day 1.
I find it utterly ridiculous that a KP2 and story expansion are still in the pipeline to be released given the fact that the player base has been reduced to a shell of what it has been in previous titles, as you said streams are almost non existent because the fans find the game boring, and the players find it boring. Adding more characters and content is the last thing they need to focus on. Fixing the game itself first then adding more content should be the way they go.
Like I said earlier I have not seen a response like yours that was well thought out and full of facts in a long time and it was refreshing to see.

I'm also a lifelong fan. Started with MK in the arcades, every home console port, all the way through the 3D and era up to present. It definitely saddens me that I haven't truly loved an MK game since X. For better or for worse that's the last time I remember genuinely being exciting not just play, but also watch, learn from tech videos, and anticipate who was gonna show off a previously slept on character or variation. I hope I can regain that excitement again one day about MK 😢

Mk1 dlc have 2 superman clone and 3 returned character that 2 of them should have been in the main roster bc they already shown in the main story and play parts of it. The only one that's remotely interesting is Peacemaker bc he do more than just 1-2 same combo and doesn't relied on Kameo to do high damage combo

Because then every character would be the same and that’d be boring. The biggest problem with MK11 and MK1 is that they’re taking away character archetypes and it’s making the game very watered down and boring.

It's a shame to create 30ish characters and close to 20 Kameos with 90% of them being ignored. They should want to do something about that. Not just nerfing the top characters but buffing others so people will want to use them.
Textbook example as to why gamebalance is important. The casuals see this and either lose interest in the game or start playing only the small selection of characters on display. You can't hide bad balance anymore.

Mk1 is a let down I gave up after 1 month... It was fun but got repetitive... On the final... I always thought they should got rid of fatal blows but comparing thus tournament to when sonic cane back against ninja in that final when ninja got 3 blows in one round.. That was way more entertaining than mk1.... Kameos make everything too safe

Great video and content as always. You hit the nail on the head yet again. The only reason why I even bothered watching Final Kombat this past weekend was because I enjoy the SonicFox and NinjaKilla rivalry but mainly to see if another character besides Johnny or Peacemaker would win. I was so disappointed when people that didn’t use those characters lost. I even got excited when I watched an Ashrah player win the LCQ. After this season of DLC is done I’m going to just let the game collect dust in my PC library. I’m just gonna do the combo trials (yet again) and once I’m done with them I’ll be uninstalling the game immediately. I have never played MK competitively but it has always been the game I enjoyed playing outside of the games that I actually do play competitively. Keep up the good work and I will continue to support you and your content. Idgaf how the MK community sees you. All that matters to me is how I see you and to me you’re one of the unsung heroes within that community.
Won’t be playing this in 10 years like MKX. 9 years after release MKX is still hype to watch and play.
Sad part is, I wouldn't want Khameleon nerfed. She is the only kameo that people tend to use her entire kit and the way people play changes depending on which form she is currently in. No other kameo can say that. It's unsafe move into special and every single person plays this way. And that in and of itself is not an issue. The problem, is that they have several other moves in their arsenal. Yet they are never ever used. The main character isn't even the main character. The kameo doesn't even matter. The kameo move is what is being selective, then everything forms around that one singular move.

I think NRS will not change his "yes man" policy cause they don't care about the competitive scene like other companies. They know 2025 will announce the new game for 2026 so mk1 sales are already done. Next game is their priority now. Great video btw.
The problem is that:
A) - you’re expecting rationality from a lot of extremely irrational people.
&
B) - you are expecting things to change from a company that has outright refused to do so at every single opportunity given to them.
And because NRS won’t change, then sadly the poor quality content made directly by them won’t change.
This franchise is dead, and they’re willfully burning it up the ground. It’s time to let Mortal Kombat die and move something else. Because at this point, it’s painfully obvious that those working at NRS, including Crazy Ed himself, are closed minded and simply don’t care.
The only way this franchise can ever truly be salvaged is if they give the rights back to John Tobias since it’s *his* creation and not Ed’s, fire Ed Boon completely and his entire team, remove *all* games from Deadly Alliance up until now from canon and *only* keep MK 1-4 plus Mythologies as canon, and do a completely new story with John writing it. But that’s just never going to happen. So, unfortunately, we are at an impasse with this colossal mess of a franchise. And the numbers are showing quite clearly that it’s beyond dead.

NRS balancing fighters and kameos is laughable at this point they have no idea what there doing. I don't mind kameos but balancing them so ones aren't strongest and weakest would help
Because the games problems are beyond the kameos. Pretty sure Tom made a few videos on that as well. Even if nrs somehow fixes the kameos to all be on the same level, the game would still have problems without the mechanics that assist games have.... that mk1 doesn't. The whole game needs rehaul

Tom, what would you say for the idea of Kameos being usable like Fatal Blows - something like... 2 times a game or even spread it by 1 use per round. Even if they raise the impact of the Kameo, make them OP AF, but usable twice per match. Then we'll have the mindgames of "is he gonna cover their a$$ with Kameo, or not" and we won't have to see constant safety caused by broken and spammable Kameos.

I absolutely agree with you 150%! I just made a video talking about how I felt about Final Kombat last night and it essentially mirrored everything you said here. So out of 513 possible teams that they could have chose from, the competitors only chose 2 teams for 95% of the entire top 8... With Homelander there are 532 potential teams to play with... But even then only 2 teams are viable for pro competition. Ridiculous... absolutely ridiculous. They really need to bring the other characters to the level of Johnny and Peacemaker to where they can stand on their own. They also just need to redesign the Kameo characters so they can match the recharge rate of Khameleon and have the same amount of tools that she gives to the characters.

Never realized how many people disliked Mk11... the guest characters kept me satisified (Robo, Rambo and i ran a FUJIN) Mk10 was decent aswell... but something about the RUSH launch of MK1 gave me cause to pause and now... 1 year later.... HOLY COW I DODGED A BULLET 😳😲😯‼️
They need to try to stop trying to make this shit a legitimately balanced fighting game.
