  • First, let's talk about the foundation of our striking: the stance. Building this from the ground up is crucial. A good stance allows everything to flow more naturally and easily. You can't build on a weak foundation.
    Let's start with the feet. Position them shoulder-width apart, though you can adjust slightly wider or narrower depending on your comfort. The key is to find balance. You should be able to move explosively from this stance.
    For right-footed fighters, or those using a Southpaw stance, mirror these instructions. Bend your legs comfortably, staying relaxed and able to transfer weight. Avoid stiffness. Think of how you would absorb weight when jumping.
    The stance I teach is a generic, default one, suitable for beginners and experts alike. It's equally good for offense and defense.
    Here's how to position yourself: Place your back foot at a 45-degree angle, distributing your weight evenly between your front and back legs. Avoid hinging at the hip or sticking it out, which I see often in beginners. This incorrect posture can cause back and hip problems.
    Stand with your side profile to your opponent, keeping your left shoulder in front, shoulders even, and hands relaxed but ready. Your elbows should protect your ribcage, and your hands should be outside of your face, not too close. Keep them slightly ahead for active defense and control.
    Maintain a neutral position, enabling access to both offense and defense. Tuck your chin and hide behind your shoulders. Practice this with relaxed shoulders and chin, keeping your eyes up. Your stance should be balanced, with a 50-50 weight distribution, resembling a crocodile on the hunt: alert, chin tucked, hands high, and relaxed.
    Regarding the lead leg, I personally angle it out for easier stepping into kicks and checking. This stance offers various options for defense and attack, and I'll detail more in the future.
