Carpenter and Russell were definitely one of the best actor/director combos ever!
I have to agree
The best! 👌
They were such a good combo, Carpenter recruited him for The Thing (my fav movie)as well.
Raimi and cambell bro
I love escape from New York. But I have a soft spot in my heart for escape from LA.
Your the Duke of TH-cam Reviews, A #1.
Wow. Coolest comment ever. Thanks! Anything else you’d like to see a video on?
@@old-school-cool Your 60's mini-documentaries needs James Doohan, from storming Juno beach in the Normandy invasion, to Chief Engineer of the most famous spaceship ever.
@@HellhammerSS great idea. Met him once.
No matter what others think, I liked both movies.
I think I could enjoy LA now that I know it was a comedy
My dad made me watch this movie, and I'm so glad her did.
I make everyone watch it lol
My fave film too, more people need to discover this gem. I hope the remake doesn't ever see the light of day.
5:38 oh come on that scene was awesome in escape from LA.
lmao
Could never imagine another actor to play snake Kurt is the man
I've gone over that many, many times, and the only person who I think could might be either Josh Brolin or Vin Diesel, and even then it wouldn't be close.
@@old-school-cool noooo. Vin Diesel?! 😂 No no no
As much as I truly adore Halloween I have to rank Escape From New York and The Thing both ahead.
Agreed
I'd add "Big Trouble In Little China" in the top 3, by all means.
Snake Plissken... the ultimate badass and anti-hero
I mean it when I say it's my favorite movie of all time
@@old-school-cool This one along with "The Road Warrior" are my favorites. Both released in 1981....not a coincidence. It was a perfect time for these kinds of movies
@@fitcwebb road warrior. Good call
@@fitcwebb wow Road warrior brings back memories hard
I’d always wondered what a movie would look like if Plissken and Rockowski interacted.
Just like You , I don't know why I like this film so much !
I LOVE Escape From New York!!! I saw it as a campy Sci Fi action movie...That why I also love Escape From LA...when the campiness went over the top...I saw it as almost a parody of the first film...kind of like how Gremlins 2 was a parody of the original Gremlins...
A lot of people may hate Escape from LA, but it had a bad ass theme and snakes new uniform was badass.
@@geeebuttersnap2433The second movie's theme is literally a remix of theme from the first movie.
Escape from LA gets so much hate, but it is so much better than the crap Hollywood puts out today. EFLA also has the greatest ending ever in cinema history.
It's just hard because EFNY was supposed to be a comedy, but didn't come out that way, so when EFLA did and it was, it was hard to swallow.
I love the music and Kurt Russell ... Also the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis does some computer audio heard early on ..
Thanks for watching :)
We need a petition / Kickstarter for escape from earth 😭 come on people we can do this
But, honestly, after Escape from LA, would it really be what we want?
@@old-school-coolEscape from LA is not that bad. But nowadays, Hollywood to ruin the franchise. We can’t have a bad ass straight white male being to masculine and competent, that’s all problematic.
Escape is my favorite flick
Changed my life
I have so much parafnalia on this movie its stacked in piles
I am very jealous. Would love to see what you have.
SNAAAAAKE!!!!
I saw that movie at the theater when I was 16.
Bit older than me :)
Escape from Chicago would be the only choice these days
Escape from Pelosi's Bedroom would prove more dangerous
I was lucky enough to see this on opening night. I was 14 yrs old and won tickets from a radio station. I had to lie and give my dads information as I was too young to get R rated tickets.
Omg so lucky. I had the same experience with The Matrix. I had won tickets abs went to see something else that was sold out (no clue what movie anymore) and we said “Meh, let’s see this Matrix thing.” Not knowing anything about it and it blew our minds.
It isn't my favorite of all time but it's my favorite John Carpenter film and that's no faint praise. I like many of his films.
No wonder I always found the narrators voice familiar I never knew it was Jamie Lee Curtis!
Bingo!
escape from LA is also a masterpiece, not as good as ny, but come on, if you didn't realize the slapstick of the first one, it's on you. just watch it, and imagine trying to act like russel does. that's why it is so amazing. his ability to keep in character while ridiculous things happen.
"masterpiece" is quite a stretch. Not even close to as good as the original
I have to disagree on Escape from LA
Masterpiece indeed
Please tell me what, at any point in Escape from New York that was slapstick. That movie was deadpan serious. That's on you, if you can't see that.
Having Valerie Golino dress up like ELVIRA was a great idea. The rest... um.....
That soundtrack has never been bettered.
Putting a scope on a Mac 10 could never work But it was still a cool movie.
And it looked cool!
Great video!! EFNY has always been one of my favorites, too! I learned a lot!! Thanks for posting this!!
Thank you!
It's incredible. The story, the performances, the music (yet another classic immortal theme by Sir John) and even the SFX all hold up BEAUTIFULLY.
My favorite film too!
So many fine actors especially the late Earnest Borgnine
Yeah I always loved that guy
Imagine trying to hold a conversation with Plissken:
Me: Hi Snake, I'm a huge fan!
Plissken: "the name's Plissken!"
Me: haha - sorry nice to meet you Plissken.
Plissken: "call me Snake."
Me: but you just said to call you Plissken!
Plissken: "sad story, got a smoke?"
Me: no lol. I c smoke so I don't have any cigarettes Snake.
Plissken: the name's Plissken.
Me: uggghhh, okay Snake Plissken then. can I have your autograph?
Plissken: "why are we talking?"
Me: I wanted your autograph, there are a lot of fans who think you are so badass you should be President
Plissken: "President of what?"
Great. Thanks a lot. I love Escape from NY, but I also love Pitch Black. Now all I can think about is Pitch Black as an Escape sequel with Kurt instead of Vin! It would be perfect! Sure Russell would be a bit on the older side, but damn. And don’t be so quick to hate on the Chuckinator…Norris could have pulled it off!
Small error - 1:55 Carter wasn't President in 1974. Great video, so much I didn't know. Carpenter and Cundey did it again, creating incredible atmosphere that is what I like the most about watching it.
Small point of correction: the burned-out exteriors weren't filmed in St. Louis, but rather East St. Louis, which is a separate city across the river in Illinois.
Is that right? I had no idea, thanks for the clarification !
I like second Escape too))
I know a lot of people did, but can’t say I enjoyed it :(
@@old-school-cool Its campyness was unforgettable. But escape from New York was way better.
ICONIC character. 100% agreed. GREAT film. I also love how it's always dark & dreary in every scene. I also loved how SP didn't consider anything sacred or even important, a nihilist if you will, but not completely immoral. Just a very interesting character and action anti-hero, so to speak.
Can't think of too many movies even close.
In my top 10
Basically birthed Metal Gear so 11/10
Yup!
Well done. I am enjoying your videos and I can see the hard work you put in these.
Thank you so much!
My favorite movie too and I've never heard it from anybody else."Roadhouse" with Patrick Swayze coming in a close 2nd.I've never sat through Escape from LA because I didn't like the "leather look" on Kurt so I let it remain as #1 all time.
Cool video bro 😎
Thank you so much. Call me Snake.
Mate, or Cousin from across The Pond....cheers for that and thanks for keeping the other film so seperate. I remember sitting there in the cinema as in Myearly 20s, seeing Carpenter's, Debra Hill's and Big Bad Kurt's names on the credit screen and being so excited......wow what a shitfest, what were They thinking??!!! 81 's New York is special though eh? Funnily enough I just shared on here the credits with My 24 Year old daughter who is heading back home to Blighty in a month or so after a few years in Oz. Mainly on the basis that Her Younger Sis has had a Snake tattoo done and We can both take the piss- Plisken, I thought You were dead? 😁😁 but also because She did a degree in media and We need to pass on these greats to the Younger, more youthfull, better looking( but less sauve and learned 😁) generation! Great Video Fella. Nice One.👌👍👍
Thank you John.
le reddit army is here... I subbed! Good stuff. Can you make one on Big Trouble in Little China?
I love escape from New York. My girlfriend & I saw the "unnamed sequel" it was so lame we left 20 minutes into the film
I had a similar reaction
AWESOME !!!! idk Jamie Lee was involved !! Cool facts in this vid !!! THANKS !!!!
Of course.
I absolutely love Escape From LA. Escape From New York is better, but LA is great.
Mine too
My husband is a movie guy. He's always called my father Clint Eastwood, and John wayne. We saw the remake of True Grit when it came out. I've known him since we were 15. Broke up for college. 23 we got back together. Started calling me Snake Plissken. From my bikes, tattoos, I played basketball, I had the same broken eye at the time, I have the same limp. I'm pretty crass, yet intelligent. Which sounds arrogant. I'm an Anarchist socialist punk. Same kinda hair, and fashion most of my life lol. Funny enough I didnt know about the movie. My mom had a huge thing for Kurt Russell in overboard too, cuz my dad young looked like him too, sadly that's the life she got. I disappeared from the public eye, a few people have been asking if I'm dead.
How does the bank scene opening confuse people? I think it's a great addition and enjoy watching it...
Jamie Lee as the computer damn if it ain’t her that’s cool
Great video man! My fav movie and i never knew Jamie did the voiceover.
Great video!
Thanks
Just watched EFNY with a buddy of mine over a few brews and goddam I love this movie..the simplicity of carpenters cinematic is hilarious and fun I’m so glad I watched it
Is there anyone else you would like to see a video on?
Half the movie was filmed in my city St.Louis Mo. The Ox Baker fight happened in Union Station and the bridge scene was shot on Chain of Rocks bridge to Illinois! And internal shots were filmed in downtown offices. And downtown at night on Lacledes landing on the riverfront.
Sounds like you love this movie, too :)
I think Escape From New York is superior to Escape From LA. That said, I like Escape From LA. It's a guilty pleasure movie of mine.
Eye patch was why everybody in the movie instantly knew who he was.
Yup
If you've ever seen that channel "Death Battle" here on TH-cam, where they take two people with lots of similarities and juxtapositions with one another and have them fight to the death.
In the tier of "sub-super soldier ability operatives" McGiver would be at the low end... James bond and John wick towards the Middle and Snake Plissken and General Hawk (of the G.I Joe franchise) would be at the high end.
If General Hawk and Snake Plissken had a chance meeting who do you think would win and why?
Agreed
Well , such good review , you did not mention anything about one iconic actor part of that movie , Lee Van Cleef
I didn't mention the limp and how he walked the entire shot? Must have missed it.
I absolutely love Escape from LA. I much prefer Escape From New York but I always thought... Escape From New York is made for New Yorkers. Escape From LA is Made for Angeleno's.
Never lived in New York, but lived in LA for years.
IS anyone paying attention to the fact that there was a video game called metal Gear Solid and the characters name was snake and that he wore an eye patch
Yes. The creator said it was an homage to Snake.
"Budding film star kurt Russell"? Dude he was in about 100 Disney movies and TV shows before this 😂
That still wasn't considered "mainstream"
@@old-school-cool I think you mean "lead actor as an adult", but ok..
They couldn't make that movie today. If they did someone would be on snakes' side or they would have somehow started rooting for Pliskin. Or Pliskin would see the righteousness of helping his country. In other words, today it would be just another piece of SH^%$. Snake is the ultimate Anti Hero. He was screwed by the system does not trust the system and could care $%%^%$ less about what happens to society. Him tearing up the REAL tape proves that On top of that it influenced so many movies that came after it. Escape from NY is a True Classic.
I couldn't agree more. Also, not many people who can play the part. They've tried to reboot or continue it several times.
Who didn't like Escape From New York, Big Trouble in Little China, and The Thing? No one, ever. Who didn't like Escape from L.A.? Nearly everyone.
Sorry, But when I saw Kurt Russel and Peter Fonda surfing down an avenue in downtown LA, I laughed my ass off!!! It was great!!! And not to mention when he found his former partner had become a woman...plus one of the best lines between Stacy Keach and Kurt Russell..."Snake Plissken: Got a smoke? Malloy: The United States is a no-smoking nation. No smoking, no drinking, no drugs. No women - unless of course you're married. No guns, no foul language... no red meat. Snake Plissken: [sarcastic] Land of the free."
The native american tribe lived in the World Trade Centre, not the theatre.
Thanks! Don't always get it 100%
If u love this movie the remake , lockout .....😂😂😂😂
2:42 Sometimes you can do a lot with less. That movie would not have been that good if they had more money.
john carpenters first attempt at foreseeing the future. a new york prison will be large enough when the crime serge gets cleaned up.
2012 Lockout with Guy Pearce is a rip off of Escape from New York III
Escape from LA was better! New York was ok, too old for my taste, puts me sleep every time I try to watch it.
I...Uh.... well, the.... we just have to agree to disagree :)
Comedy!? Really!?
Escape from L.A. wasn't as good!
