This is one of those films that can never be ‘re-imagined’ because the concept, script, cast, and direction are as close to perfect as possible. Also, our society has gone way past the nihilistic ideas represented in this film. It wouldn’t have the same impact as it did in the 80s. It’s great as it is-don’t mess with it.
John Carpenter was an incredibly talented filmmaker and one of my favourites growing up. I'd watch Escape from New York, Halloween, The Fog, Assault on precinct 13, Big trouble in little China, Prince of Darkness, and The Thing on many occasions. Not only that but his synth scores were excellent too.. and matched up perfectly to the great things he was directing on screen....Carpenter is a true living legend in my opinion.
No to a remake because as far as I’m concerned this is a perfect dark action movie. I saw this when I was twelve years old and I was blown away then and this movie still works on me now in my fifty’s. It’s a master piece made with real zest and heart. Hollywood would ruin it because Hollywood is everything John Carpenter isn’t. Thank God🇮🇪
either you or Carpenter omit the fact that much of the story, right down to the character of Snake Plisskin, is lifted from an episode of an old tv western anthology series starring Dick Powell called Zane Grey Theatre. The episode is called The Release and it aired on April 27, 1961. Cesar Danova played the Plisskin character, Lee Duval, who is sent on a mission by the governor in order to secure his freedom. Carpenter just updated it from 19th century Texas to a fictional NYC of 1997.
Classic film! Great commentary on it! Thanks for posting. NO! Do not remake it. There are only a handful of perfect films that should not be remade. Back to the Future, Casablanca, Escape from New York, and a few others.
I remember attending the Hollywood premiere at the Paramount Theater (before it became the "El Capitan") because I worked for James Cameron at New World Pictures in Venice. John and Adrienne were in a separate area near the projection booth. We were so proud seeing how well the special effects worked in the film, we just knew Cameron was moving on. For the money, everything about this film, especially the cast, goes way past the COOL factor in my book. If Snake Plissken ever met Jack Burton across the 8th dimension I would die happy.
The character of Solid Snake is definitely inspired - heavily - by Snake Plisskin, but none of the Metal Gear games are really based off, on or their plot inspired by Escape from New York. Heck! I for one would LOVE to see an 'Escapre from...' video game. The material is perfectly suited for a video game. You have an over-arching rescue mission, a series of NPC's who can give you side quests, weapon upgrades & all sorts of different landmarks that play as stages. Here's hoping some day such a game ends up happening. Maybe it can become a sequel to the movies.
The filming location where the helicopters land is right next to the 405 where it connects to the 134 in the San Fernando Valley, CA. They film some crazy stuff in that flood basin.
I have watched one of the best movies ever made since I saw it the day it came out in Berkley CA one hundred and fifty gazillion times. Watch it every now and then since! Just to have it in the background😃❤😀
I don't know if it's the content or not but I really enjoyed this video more than all your others, and I usually really like most of your work, but this one was just a great watch beginning to end. So fun. Thank you.
Lol...I just got notified about a post 7 years ago about me watching Philadelphia Experiment. Any excuse to see Nancy Allen is a good one was the gist.
When I first went to uni in 1987 and could finally buy my own things (saved up some cash via summer jobs), I started my VHS collection with 2001 and a buttload of Carpenter movies. :D A similar list to those cited by Paul Hirst below, but also "Dark Star", "Christine" and "Starman". Naturally I bought "They Live" a year later, which shook my fave-film pedestal that had until then held "The Thing". Quite a start to a movie collection, though I must admit "Halloween" didn't appeal to me so much, nor "The Fog". I loved his music, bought some soundtrack albums too, but most especially the stories, characters, etc. Carpenter's later films weren't as strong I think, though it's funny how "They Live" has become in more recent times so very applicable given the extreme degree of collectivist nonsense and out of control state, corporate & media power that pervades these days (especially during the past two years), even if that wasn't quite the idea Carpenter was trying to convey. Hollywood couldn't write movies like "Escape From New York" anymore (ironic given how much NYC has gone down the toilet); a strong white male lead? Can't have that. No soft bigotry of low expectations pandering to vote-exploited minority groups? Heavens no, The Message must be pushed! Modern movies must be safe spaces for the emotionally damaged who never grew up. We didn't realise back in the 70s and 80s just how good we had it in terms of movie making. Watching old films today, they shine like stars in the darkness compared to modern Hollywood rubbish. Go watch, "The French Connection", you'll see what I mean, followed by, "Colossus: The Forbin Project", "Phase IV" and, "The Quiet Earth". Or on a lighter note, "The Brother From Another Planet". As for my VHS collection, media giants can't delete them on a whim, unlike Amazon and other services which wipe out or demote content on a regular basis. If you like various older films, bag them on VHS, DVD or BR while you can, because in the current political climate a fair few are getting memory holed, edited to oblivion or are otherwise just not available now.
@@mapesdhs597 yep,got the quite man and the four mentioned below in my collection,as i was born in 1962 these movies are in my opinnion the greatest, four other greats with john wayne, the alamo, hatari, hellfighters and donovan's reef, not so keen on his western movies tough 😁

Hell F’*ing yes 👍🏽!! One of my absolute favorites & a classic…just love it. A great watch, a phenomenal cast , perfect music as always with John Carpenter. I love the movie poster! A very ambitious story of a dystopian future America 🇺🇸 & world 🌍. It makes you wonder, the way things are now in the USA/ World , especially with fear, paranoia, xenophobia , wars, economic disparities, racism & pandemics could this happen…@ one time no…now…maybe?!. I wouldn’t be surprised…sadly…would you…?.

It is not East St. Louis, Missouri. It is East St. Louis, Illinois, directly east of St. Louis, Missouri on the other side of the Mississippi River. However, several scenes were shot in downtown St. Louis, Missouri itself. Some of the exterior downtown shots with tall buildings, and the fight scene in the boxing arena was filmed inside of Union Railroad Station before St. Louis renovated the entire property and turned it into a shopping / entertainment center. The bridge that stood in for the Brooklyn Bridge was the Chain of Rocks bridge that spanned the Mississippi River. .

The truth is Snake does not actually do much in this film. I love it, but he's actually pretty ineffective for 2/3rds of the movie. Lots of very good info in this video.
Lemme see if I got this right: Those movies stole the Statue of Liberty thing from Escape from New York? Uh… NO. I’m thinking about the end of Planet of the Apes in 1968. 🤷🏽♂️
I Love the Character of Snake Plisken. A remake isnt needed, but often times, the Remake brings attention back to the original. If it were to be done, they should try to do an unconnected shared universe. Where thing just happen to exist in the same place. Do a remake of Escape from New York, The Warriors, The Running Man. Escape from L.A., Demolition Man. With each movie just loosely referencing each other. It's a fascinating world what was not explored enough
It's easy to be cynical with movie toughguys and to not take them serious or straight up goof on them and ruin the movie (for me anyway). Carpenter made the right decision though. I didn't dislike Snake right away and came to think the guy was cool over the years.

I think The Thing came after this film. My family went to see a drive in double feature of Thing and Escape. What an exhilarating night.

Instead of remaking "Escape from New York," let's have a remake of "Used Cars" but with Kurt Russell playing Snake Plissken instead of Rudy Russo.
