You need to torque the filter cap. 18 ft lbs., same as the drain plug. Starting point and new o-ring can change the end position. Your blue dot may not line up when properly torqued. Also, Mann filters make the BMW filter. They just put a BMW stamp on the end. As far as oil, I prefer Liqui-Moly Special Tech 5-W30. I live in the south, so you would want to use a weight oil for the colder weather in your area. As long as your oil meets the LL-01 standard BMW recommends, you should be good.
You should loose the filter, do not remove it, before draining the oil. This will make the draining much faster, as there is no vacuum created by the oil leaving the engine.
Another good thing to always do is to prime the oil filter. I pour about a quarter of a quart into the oil filter before I install it. Might seem small, but it doesn't add any mess, and it prevents the engine from any extra wear saturating the filter might cause.

The mechanic I use needed to change the oil in my 325i. He used Liquid Moly 5-30. I used Mobil 1 0-40 euro blend but, not anymore. The car got about a 100 extra miles per tank with the thinner oil. My next change I'm using a good synthetic 5-30. Color me convinced.
Liqui Moly 2332 Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 is excellent. It meets BMW approval and Merc approval. First hand I can attest that in my 07 Merc AMG 63 when I used Mobil 1 Formula M 5W40 I would have clatter on start up and ticking from the lifters if the car sat over 3 days. With Liqui Moly Leichtlauf 5W40 clatter on start up is gone and it stays in the lifters over a week...rarely do I have ticking. Good stuff and good in both my E90 and F30 BMWs.
I caught the dip stick joke instantly! LOL. I use Liqui Moli SAE 5W-40 full synthetic. I noticed that my E90 330i oil level would drop slightly every 10,000 or 15,000 km which I understand is normal. A bottle of Liqui Moli motor oil saver changed that entirely. Thanks for another great video.
I worked for Pennzoil for over 15 years, first as Regional Technical Service Manager based in Oil City, PA, then at the Regional Headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. I was promoted to National Technical Manager at the Houston, TX HQ. I then went on to be the Product Manager for Pennzoil’s heavy duty (diesel) engine oils. Bottom line - I can tell you with absolute certainty that Pennzoil is the best oil, backed up dynamometer testing as well as field testing. I know because I know the data.
I use full synthetic Walmart brand motor oil. Between my wife and kids, I have 6 cars at home and I've been using Walmart oil for years without any issues. A 5 quart bottle runs about $17. It meets the same API oil standards as all the major oil brands, just read the label on the bottle. I've tried all the major brands before, Mobil 1, Castrol, Valvolive etc. Never thought any of them were better.
For my N55 engine: for winter BMW oil which is Shell Helix or Pennzoil Euro Platinum 0w30, 0w40. All these 3 oils are the same oil produced by Shell under different brands name. If you do a lot of city driving sitting at the traffic lights or crawling bumper to bumper for length of time, is better to use the 40 viscosity grade. Then for summer Pennzoil Euro Platinum (again a Shell rebranded oil). They got all the best approvals from BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi and Ferrari. Or Liqui Moly 0w40 and 5w40.
I just go with the 5w30 oem BMW bottles, but mine is an N54 instead of an N52 like yours. I always go with the BMW branded bottles, so I'm always sure it's manufacturer approved and when it comes to price, it really is not more expensive than the other good brands like castrol, mobil, liqui moly, etc....so it doesn't hurt either the car and the wallet.
I been using castrol edge 0w-40. I've been considering to switch to liqui moly but don't know if I should keep using 0w-40 or change it 5w-30. I read somewhere that's what some swapped too
just stick to 0w40 all year long, changing the type of oil every 2 oil changes main have negative affects to the engine since it never gets use to a specific weight if you keep changing it, no to mention seals dont like that either.
One tip is to pour the first quart or so of oil into the filter housing before putting the filter in. This prevents any possibility of the low oil warning coming on when you start it up.
Used the mobile 1 high mileage for e90 only because autzone deal. Comes with funnel and plastic oil pan to drain the oil into for $5 more. Will try the Castrol one you used possibly next time.
Always 0w40 mobil1 regardless of season as it thickens or thins according to temp. I tried Castrol before a couple of times, it makes the valve lifters clicking on idle speed and also level goes down between changes but with mobil1 never
Shell has been chosen by BMW as their only recommended global supplier for aftermarket engine oils. Their previous supplier was Castrol. I've been told by a BMW mechanic that Pennzoil is the maker of Shell oils.
I use Castrol 0w40 since it returns great used oil analysis results and is BMW long life LL-01 certified. If I couldn't find that for some reason I'd use Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0w40, also an excellent oil. Always use the MANN filter also.
I'm a dealer mechanic in a northern state. Any engine newer than 2015 we use 5w30, any 4 cylinder after 2015 or b series uses 5w20. 5w30 is still used for n55 and n63s.
I want to ask you about electricity, glass, windows not working on the remote control, what is the malfunction and what should I do? I do not trust the stakeholders, but I trust you and do everything you say. I hope to answer my question
As to that oil leak you had....I bet you a dollar that you had the O-ring in the wrong spot on the oil filter housing....if it`s all the way up top, you will get a leak. It has to be down in that second groove in the housing to seal properly (look @ 3:20 on your video). I use Mann filters too, also the same Castrol synthetic, changed every 7500 miles.
You are right I used a K&N filter, had to open filter for other maintanance only after few hundred miles. I noticed the slits in the filter were forced open.
5w-40 Castrol Edge in my 540. HUGE difference between Castrol Magnatec and Edge. Edge lasted much longer and the engine barely burns any oil when using Edge (Magnatec burned, a lot)
I also lub up the filter with oil after I've reinstalled the drain plug. then proceed to fill the engine back up with oil. Makes it so on a cold start the oil filter housing already has frsh new oil

You can just pour the oil with a funnel when done into the 6quart oil bottle sold at the autoshop +1more quart that is needed to make sure you're good on a 2006 325i 6cyl (e90). No need to take your container with you. Just drop it off and go 👍
I've been using Pennzoil since I had my 328i an still using Pennzoil on my 335xi! Seems to run great with it! I also had to replay the part about checking the oil level with the dip stick like 10x's 😂😂 Great video too! Love them! 😃
Hi Justin, its hard to get Castrol now because BMW is recommending Penzoll oil now, i am going to use Liqui Moli which is a oil made in Germany and is a High quality oil based on some of the reviews i have read.
Use BMW LL01 spec oil. Mobil One or Penzoil Platinum brand oil. I Chang the oil every 7,000 miles. The N54 has vanos sensors, when they get dirty the car goes into limp mode. To avoid limp mode increase the oil change interval.
The best way of knowing how well the oil is working in the engine is to do oil analysis at every oil change. The report tells you metal contaminants, fuel dilution, life of the oil in terms of base number, and other oxidation reference values. If the base number is too high, you are changing the oil too soon. If it is too low, you are using the oil for too long. You find the sweet spot of oil change as the engine starts to get older in mileage. For example: I know my Acura MDX 3.7L engine took about 70K miles to fully break-in. My 528i 2.0L engine took about 55K miles to fully break in. Another great piece of information is the MDX optimal oil change interval is not set at 10K miles. In the BMW, I am still working out that information. With the information I have on hand at 62K miles, looks like the optimal interval is going to be around 8K miles.
one suggestion when you pour oil from bottle keep opening on upside that let oil come out easily without spilling. so you hold bottle exactly opposite way opening on upside and handle and otherbody down side
Penrite 5w40 on an ej255. Suits our Australian weather and OEM filter and crush washer. I use a oil pan with the measurement and I know how much is drained each time. I never felt I had to tighten the filter with the cup and wrench. Hand tighten should be sufficient
I am using Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W-30. I read a link where BMW changed their recommended oil manufacturer to Pennzoil a while back, and as I am a new BMW owner (2010 BMW 328i sport pkg) I thought I might go along with their recommendation. Here is the link I am referring to www.bmwblog.com/2015/05/12/pennzoil-is-now-the-recommended-oil-for-bmw-engines/. BTW, I laughed out loud when you checked your dipstick. Love your videos man.
I did not notice the model of your car, but I drive an M5 and M6 -- both V10s -- with a slightly different procedure. The oil filter rides on the passenger side near the oil cooler. I use Ravenol 10W60, a G.group V oil.
I like to use Mobil 1 ESP 0W40 in my BMW 120d. Read a lot of good stuff on it and also it's always one of the best oils in objective oil analysis. But since Mobil 1 doesn't offer a 5W40 LL04 that I personally like based on laboratory tests I might switch to the Motul x-clean 5W40 soon. My dad likes Castrol better, so I always put Castrol Oil in my dad's E90 and it also runs just fine.
3:40 really, really important: give the seals a touch of oil, otherwise they wont seal properly, also this way you wont damage the seals while reinstalling .
When filling oil you add what 5 quarts then just start the car to check the level? Asking as you don't want to start it with too much or too little oil.
I recommend you bizol green 5w40 or motul 8100 x-cess both motor oils are so good one Made in France and the other Made in Germany and meets the LL-01 specification for BMW I used both on my 2010 X3 and I have no problems 👍🏽
This is perfect timing. I'm doing mine tomorrow for the first time at home and I've already watched the other videos and this is gonna help so much. Keep it up ! Great video man!!
I like castrol oil because my father has a VW Passat and that has 600 000km. He has always used castrol oil and it’s running like a dream. That engine has never been rebuilt or sth like that.
Hey bro good video.. I have a 2003 BMW e46 330ci with approximately 223,000 miles on it and i use Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5w30 along with Lucas Full Synthetic oil stabilizer. I switched from Vavoline and since I switched it doesn't use any oil in between oil changes. Before it used a quarter in between. I go 5,000 miles on oil changes... I enjoy your videos keep them coming
Liqui Molly 5W-40. It was on the list from their website that matches the N52b25, i chose the -40 instead of the -30 because of the higher temp tolerance. Why Liqui Molly? Because it's one of the best oils on the market.
And definitely don’t take to a “quick change” oil place! Step son did that and well basically they “lost” that center part on the oil filter cap. They put it all back together and didn’t tell him. After two weeks of hearing a nasty loud whining like noise, I finally suggested that we re-do the oil change ourselves. Found that the cap had been damaged, ordered a genuine OEM part and replaced the filter they had used with a Mann and put Castrol Edge 0W40 in it. Runs great now!
Martyn H i took mine to jiffy lube & they forgot to put oil back in it. I drove a few blocks before the engine shut down. They tried to deny it but finally ended up replacing the engine, car was never the same tho
The reason Mann filters fit so well is that they are one of the main suppliers for BMW. A BMW filter is a Mann filter with a different name on the ring around the end.
From the dealer perspective the N54 motor (assuming certainly not for sure) takes 6.5 litres of 5W-30 oil. If 2012 for further it takes 0W-30 in the same volume.
For my 1994 e32 740i M60 (232,000 miles), I use Pento motor oil kit which includes Mann filter and accessories. All parts, as well as engine oil, are purchased from FCP Euro under their free replacement program. Buy your first part or oil kit and receive a refund for the same replacement thereafter. Enjoy the ride.
A Mahle oil filter is every bit as good as Mann. Correct installation and cleanliness are more critical to the final result than choosing between quality brands.
Great video like always, btw I use Mobil 1 05-30, never had any problems and the engine runs really smooth. Also I the same brand of oil filter Mann ! Keep up the good work !

Thanks man i been seen your vids since i got a 09 bmw 328i xdrive you help alot
one suggestion when you pour oil from bottle keep opening on upside that let oil come out easily without spilling. so you hold bottle exactly opposite way opening on upside and handle and otherbody down side
I love it, when new oil is poured into the engine. I personally like Liqui-Moly or Motul oil.
Penrite 5w40 on an ej255. Suits our Australian weather and OEM filter and crush washer. I use a oil pan with the measurement and I know how much is drained each time. I never felt I had to tighten the filter with the cup and wrench. Hand tighten should be sufficient
I use on my BMW mobil 1 5w40 oil and I noticed the difference well when I turn the engine on when it's cold, oil a bit expensive but if it's worth it!
I only use amsoil full synthetic in all my vehicles, and a K&N oil filter. I see so many people buy good oil then cheap out on the filter.
I just got my first 06 bmw 325i. And you been a big help. Keep up the videos bmws are life.
3:40 really, really important: give the seals a touch of oil, otherwise they wont seal properly, also this way you wont damage the seals while reinstalling .
Thanks man. I own 3 BMWs. Never new filter wrenches existed. One is on the way now!
I learned something important that I did not previously know from this video. Thank You😁
I use Motul 8100 X-cess 5w-40 in my 335xi. Will switch to Red Line 5w-30 in the future, it's ester-based oil.
Something about fresh oil
Always tastes so good!
Yes theres just something about new oil lol... I'm always watching oil videos
Mmmmm oil....
When filling oil you add what 5 quarts then just start the car to check the level? Asking as you don't want to start it with too much or too little oil.
I just saw someone mentioning that you can bleed oil after oils change to avoid the ticking sound. How true is that?
I recommend you bizol green 5w40 or motul 8100 x-cess both motor oils are so good one Made in France and the other Made in Germany and meets the LL-01 specification for BMW I used both on my 2010 X3 and I have no problems 👍🏽
This is perfect timing. I'm doing mine tomorrow for the first time at home and I've already watched the other videos and this is gonna help so much. Keep it up ! Great video man!!
Glad I could help!
You have been doing oil changes on your car for years, you know what your doing keep it up 👍 and choice of oil your using seems to be working great
It gets easier every time!
MOBILE 1 💪🏼
I like castrol oil because my father has a VW Passat and that has 600 000km. He has always used castrol oil and it’s running like a dream. That engine has never been rebuilt or sth like that.
I use in my N62 Valvoline, Castroll or Pennzoil depends which one is on sale typically 0W30
Castrol 5w-40 synthetic for me. Is there a reason you don't use ramps?
What about resetting the intervals on the BC? Whould be really helpfull if you made a video about that. Nice work keep it up👍🏻👍🏻
you have 2 types of oil!! 5w40 on small bottle and 0w40 on big bottle! which is it you use??
Best tip is to do it yourself and not the dealership 😂
True!
Martyn H that also for sure! I don’t trust any of those shops!
GTACentral best ur mechanic buddy who get hookup on at cost oils 💯🏃♂️
Martyn H i took mine to jiffy lube & they forgot to put oil back in it. I drove a few blocks before the engine shut down. They tried to deny it but finally ended up replacing the engine, car was never the same tho
How do you know if the oil needs to be changed? It only shows oil level.
The reason Mann filters fit so well is that they are one of the main suppliers for BMW. A BMW filter is a Mann filter with a different name on the ring around the end.
My 2007 bmw X3 has 180k miles, what motor oil should I use? I use Mobil 1 extended preformance high milage. Is that ok?
I ran Mobil one ow40 for my 335 and Castrol 10w60 for my e90 m3
Good choice in motoroil. One of the best oil brands in the in the world
From the dealer perspective the N54 motor (assuming certainly not for sure) takes 6.5 litres of 5W-30 oil. If 2012 for further it takes 0W-30 in the same volume.
Ripping people off
I just had one oil change done since I bought my car. I got Pentosin High Performance 5w40 I believe, and Mann filter from FCP Euro.
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum - only oil made from natural gas, not crude oil. Cleans much better and is more resistant to breakdown at extreme temps.
Thanks for the video. Especially appreciate the acknowledgment of health effects with oil exposure. 🙏
Why to use 0w40 and not as bmw recommendation is 5w30? How often ur n52 engine burns oil? Thanks
Thank you for the important information. I have such a car and I am following you with all the steps that you take
What is the tool you use to jack up the car?
For my 1994 e32 740i M60 (232,000 miles), I use Pento motor oil kit which includes Mann filter and accessories. All parts, as well as engine oil, are purchased from FCP Euro under their free replacement program. Buy your first part or oil kit and receive a refund for the same replacement thereafter.
Enjoy the ride.
Liqui moly only !! Can’t cheap out on the oil that’s why
Which oil can i use for a 2010 535i xdrive? Thank you
Hi, I have a 2009 BMW 525d. 220.000 km. it’s better Liqui Moly 5w40 or 5w30? I would like the best oil. I live in Greece
I always use castrol edge, it's what bmw recommends for my e60 and the prices are so similar that I don't see a reason to "cheap out".
Liqui Molly 5+ years using. Napa gives 20% off with AAA card. It is a German oil, So i told myself why not use it? Overall I think it's really great oil coming from prior Castro user.
