How do you even learn improv like that?? You can just think of what will sound good in in half of a second, even if your using licks that you practice, it’s pretty impressive to do that for an entire solo on a moderately fast song

It takes years of practice and then years of performance and more practice, and lots of times, not satisfied that you played the way you really wanted, so more practice...at least for us mortals. On the other hand, I have met genius players (or born talents) who have it all together very young.
I’ve been playing the alto sax for 5 years, and I do jazz at my high school, and as an intermediate soloist getting the hang of many things still, I like to think that it all has to do with muscle memory. When I solo, I try not to think too hard, and I automatically play some licks or go up and down a certain chord scale. I just listen for the chord changes. 👌
I love how the second soloist went out with a Bird phrase...and the third came in with it. Nicely done.
