I was there, everybody was waiting for him to close the festival, there had been delays through the day & Steve came on late, he played past the curfew that Michael Eavis had agreed with the local population as part of getting approval for the licence to run the festival, this led to Steve's set being cut short at about 12:30am (music was supposed to stop at 12 midnight) there ensued an argument with Steve throwing his guitar down & saying he would never play at Glastonbury Festival (called Glastonbury Fayre back then) ever again. In later years Steve was almost a fixture appearing as System7 with his partner Miquette Giraudy & later The Steve Hillage Band on various stages, mostly the dance tent stage & The Glade Stage. He toured recently with band members also known as Gong. (on my channel playing in Bristol)

I was there and that incident has slipped from my memory banks! I do remember Steve playing alongside Peter Gabriel, Alex Harvey, Nona Hendryx, Tom Robinson, Phil Collins and others in a kind of super jam.
Also if I remember correctly Tim Blake Crystal Machine closed the festival.

True. Late running at Glastonbury was very common around that time. The same thing happened to Hawkwind in 1981, the police turned up to close them down around 12.30am.

@@stephenhaswell5823 Yeah, I was there as well. There's a great recording (sounds like it's off the soundboard) of Hawkwind Glastonbury 1981 on TH-cam. I guess you've heard it if not give it a listen. I love It. In the early days of festivals, Bath 1970,Isle Of Wight 1970,Weeley 1971 just to mention the ones I was at,the bands played through the night to fit them all in, I can't remember if Bickershaw 1972 did, that memory was wiped out by 'black mic' although I do remember the rain, cold & mud & the sun appearing late in the day as Grateful Dead played.

The story is told in great detail in the excellent book included with the SFTS box set, including Steve's charming recollection of waking the next morning and exclaiming to Miquette "I've poisoned the leyline!"

Book-A-Pak! And the CDs often fall out. Just seem so cheaply made and tacky. But that's where we are today. I saw John Martyn's Sunday's Child image in there (or it looked very similar. Agree with you on his cover of Hurdy Gurdy Man. He made it his own. Glad you mentioned the recording being decent. I enjoyed your review (especially the: "Oh me oh my there's a light in the sky" impersonation). 🙂 I will subscribe and wander through your reviews. Thanks ♥

Yeah man....I remember buying Green back when I was in college. Whew, what an LP to play while under the, ahem, influence. I also love Motivation Radio, another fantastic LP.

I agree. Andy Andersdon (RIP) was such a fantastic drummer. Remember seeing him in Derby playing with Hawkwind 1983. He had a metal shelled drums and was thumping them that hard you could hardly hear the rest of the band (laughs!). Great gig, I don't know why he didn't stay longer with the Hawks?

There is more on that CD (1 extra track) than the boot version that I have, but may be that songs blend into each other without being named.

Friendly, laid back pronunciation comment: "Giraudy" is "ji-raud-ee".

Hi Pete. Hat's off to you, the first non-British person I've ever heard pronouce Glastonbury properly! It ends with a short "Brie" as you said it (like the French cheese). Last time I saw Steve & Miquette as Mirror System, a Sunday afternoon gig, they opened with "Light in the Sky". Most unexpected that they would do a vocal song. Steve, in playful mood, even got the audience to sing along copying Miquette's French accent. I'm very new to Sea of Traquillity so I wanted to ask if you've done any videos on the 13th Floor Elevators and if so are they still available? Enjoyed the review, thanks!

Not a huge Hillage fan but I do have 11 or so albums (including 4 live), not this one though. It's posted to Bandcamp though so took a listen. TBH his vocals were never great & that especially holds in his live performances. I also always felt that he was a little too much in love with using delays in his solos to "fatten" his sound & add spacey-ness. He's a good enough player that he can (should) use it less & instead give us more of the great solos that he's totally capable of playing. Given that, for me his singing ruins the first two tracks & "Crystal City", plus I already have a better/longer live version of "Electrick Gypsies". "Unidentified (Flying Being)" is not bad, pretty funky. I already have a live "Radio" from his BBC album & "The Glorious Om Riff" from Düsseldorf. "Octave Doctors" may be my fave track here. "1988 Aktivator" is too punk & "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is just a weird inclusion. So overall not a bad live record, actually pretty good, but honestly nothing here that I can't live without/don't already have. My pick for a better live album: Düsseldorf. Live At The Gong Family Unconvention (also has stuff on it from '79) also contains some interesting tracks
