Ahh, the mighty Kodiak has been a personal favorite ever since it first came out when I was playing the solo MW games in the early 90s. 4x Gauss rifles used properly, and if your teammates are helping to kinda cover you in your static sniping position looks like it can do plenty of huge damage! ;-D
This mech being my personal favourite i feel that i must add that having the 2 gauss specific modules makes on hell of a difference, as well as having the kodiak elited for the fast fire skill
dude.. you roasted em... man I thought I was good in my timberwolf... man Ima go buy a Kodiak, thats why I was watching this, considering buying it.. damn man you sold me on it
I played this build on Mechwarrior 4? back in the day. The last boss walked out radio in "I am Khan so and so." I said uh huh and quad gaussed his CT, boom dead. I think the quickest boss fight I had in any game.
Hi Baradul! Love your vids. I've been learning so much from them. I just started playing this game for a month and I've been enjoying my Hellbringer Prime. I bought this mech (Kodiak 3) today. Can you revisit this build and show your skill Tree? (Pretty please?) Keep going with all these good content! Thank you!
Instead of taking the advance zoom, you should consider taking the mod that prevents your teammates from stopping on the ramp. :D But in all seriousness thank you for addressing the issue of having an assault mech fitted as a sniper. It hurts my soul when most my team is dead and there is an assault mech in the second line without a scratch on him.
As usual it looks like you know what you are doing but I would like to make some brief points: The high ballistic mounts on this mech mean that ridge-humping is one of the best tactics to employ, and almost nobody shoots at the legs of a Kodiak (or most any big assault mech). Because of this I often run only 45 points of armor on the legs of my assaults with high mounts, and practically never get legged. Additionally, I run only 8 points of armor or so on my head. I can count on both hands the times I have been cockpitted and I have been playing since open beta. Drop that armor for a slightly bigger engine, and your extra mobility will be far more useful for keeping you alive than armor that usually doesn't actually help you at all. I would also move one ton of ammo out of one arm to the other, giving you a dead/shield arm to work with. Just my two cents worth of experience. :)
just to add for those not knowing, omni ( you can change hard points) mechs in MWO cant change engines, IIC and specially mechs like the kodi, are able. The nightgyr will most likely be able to change out engine also.
Guass ammo doesn't explode. The gauss rifle itself is what is vulnerable to crits. I am not sure if the CASE protects the gun, I thought it just protected the ammo in the component
Case does not protect the ammo or the gun or even the component that it is used in. Instead, it prevents damage from ammo or gauss explosions from transferring to the next component. When ammo is destroyed it deals damage to the structure that the contained ammo equal to the potential damage of the ammo that exploded. 50% of the excess damage is then dealt to the adjacent component closest to the CT unless case is installed with the ammo. Also, while guass ammo doesn't explode or deal damage when it is destroyed, it can take damage and be destroyed like all other types of ammo.
Correction CASE protects the rest of the mech not the location it is stored in. If one gun explodes it will deal damage to the internals of that torso and has the chance to crit something inside the torso as well including the other gun. If the torso is destroyed by the gun explosion then the damage will NOT transfer to the CT as it would in an inner sphere mech with no CASE.
Pretty nasty. Last night I was up against at least one, if not two of those. The one took out two of my friends in short order, right at the beginning of the match.
Hey Awesome video! I was wondering if there are any Mechs in the Shop that can make a 4x Gauss rifle build that would be effective. I'm a little new to the game so I don't have any clan mechs or anything like that. But if there is a Mech in the shop that could work with 4x Gauss that would be great. Thanks!!!!
Uh, oldies but goldies. I wonder if this build is still viable within the current meta. It seems kind of trollish, but I do have a KDK-3 equipped with soem UAC's of various calibre. Hm. Let's go find out.
that is not actually true. I have tested both with lock and without and I have to move my mouse the same distance to get the torso to the same spot. The main diff is without lock it is slower to turn the torso.
Since you brought up the problem of proper target prioritization, I was wondering if you've encountered my biggest pet peeve: people who flat out REFUSE to lock on to enemies. I understand that in a public drop you can't always count on effective teamwork, but isn't locking on the single easiest thing that you can do to help the team? why do people refuse to do it? Is it just because I'm slogging through the lower tiers (just barely cracked tier 3 recently)? Just to clarify, I don't mean when people don't lock on in the heat of battle because you're too focused on twisting and returning fire, I mean people who get hostile when I use the time waiting for the match to start to remind newer players that locking on can be really beneficial to the team since it reveals enemy locations to friendly radar. Is it me? Is there some unspoken code that I don't know about? Do you encounter this in the upper tiers? P.S.: Absolutely love your tutorials and builds of the week, keep up the great work!
They probably assumed that your tip on using locks meant that you were a useless lrm boat begging for targets. It happens often enough that they can't be faulted too much for making that mistake.
I always lock simply because it makes my team aware of where an enemy is and to search for damaged sections of a mech that are easily destroyed to reduce their firepower or kill them quickly. Even for purely selfish reasons, locking is advantageous. You should remind them that fact exists regardless of how they feel about missile boats.
LRM boaters tend to think that light mechs should tank damage all day just to keep locks for the LRM boats. That's what gets light mechs killed. OF COURSE locking targets is crucial, but if you want locks for your LRM boat, you better have some TAG with you and are willing to do it yourself, too.
lol saying lrm boats are useless is pretty dumb...as a brawler focused player I like to have some lrm boats with me, they soften the enemy up while I protect them from oxides. when they are done with the missle rain, I go on a killing spree. every gun in this game has its purpose, even machine guns and flamers. you just need to have the skill to play it right.
You mention not going to a XL and choosing a standard engine for this build. Is it now possible to switch engines on clan mechs now ? I thought that wasn't possible in MWO to switch stuff that's in the build like the engine or JJ's etc. Also @ 4:30 " yeah i grouped my weapons into left and right so i can fire the appropriate weapon when i`m peeking "
The Kodiak is a clan Battlemech, as is the case with the IIC mechs. It's only the Omnimechs which have locked equipment, since they're allowed to swap around their hardpoints.
within the context of MechWarrior it is. it's like if someone said make a light mech with a heavy blaster cannon. pretty clear they mean a large pulse laser.
DarkDeathTrooper in MechWarrior Online there is a Gauss cannon but no railgun. think railgun was just something added for MW4 . it's not a traditional weapon in the BattleTech universe
It's as close as MWO allows; Gauss rifles are actually *coilguns*, which operate on a similar principle. Railguns exist as Warship weapons (and in Mechwarrior 4, in impractical 28-ton versions that can be mounted to the Stone Rhino and Marauder II.)
The amount of team damage the Kodiak receives is really bad, just like in your 2 games I too tend to receive 500 to 800 damage a game. I hardly ever take team damage in other mechs even large assaults like the Atlas or King Crab.
Try a video with Quad gauss ppc:mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=408&l=0584c98260e283069b870cff87933d8f6235fb00 Still not sure if any other mech can boat this.
I loved the video, but unfortunately it shows the somewhat problematic nature of MWO's doubling of armour. If it really were battletech, hitting two gauss shots in the same spot on a light would kill no matter where you hit but in MWO it doesn't even destroy a component unless it is already damaged. I wouldn't mind so much because it stretches out the game and kind of makes it more interesting, but when it comes to ammo 'mechs, you are pretty screwed because you don't get twice as much ammo per ton.
Jules du Mont i got a TBR-C with a 90 point alpha it has 2 erll 4 ersml and 4 srm 6's and i love it...one alpha to the rear of an atlas and it kills them everytime
Jules. I tried that build but it didn't function very well for me. The 4 CERLL generate an insane amount of heat + you get penalty heat with 4 large lasers. Also, if you mount them on the arms, it would require to be totally exposed before shooting. Isn't that dangerous? Can you please give me some tips on the way you run your build? I'm still a noob (30h+ played) and after several attempts I found this build which is quite decent: - 2x ERPPC on torso - 2x streak SRM on torso. This allows me to snipe while being pretty well covered. There is no weapons on the arms (only heatsinks) so I can use them solely for shielding. It is very efficient heatwise. It allows me to stay cool during sniping. And during brawls, I can still manage to fire 2 streak SRMS and the ERPPC almost with no interruption without suffering a shutdown. The only issue with this build is with ECM non-targetable light mechs that turn out s-SRM to be useless :(
Used to run 7 med laser sunshine build with timby til the heavy weight nerfs came in for community war or whatever they call it now, now its 3 or 4 ebon jag sunshine build. sunshine > LL :p
The young voice of the young Baradul
Hey, I just saw your video! That was great! Thanks for taking my comment!!
Really enjoy the vids, keep 'em coming!
Hey man I played against you the other day. Love your videos so much keep them coming x
Ahh, the mighty Kodiak has been a personal favorite ever since it first came out when I was playing the solo MW games in the early 90s. 4x Gauss rifles used properly, and if your teammates are helping to kinda cover you in your static sniping position looks like it can do plenty of huge damage! ;-D
Great video yet again. And you're marksmanship with the Gauss Rifle is awe-inspiring for a newbie like me. I can't even land half my Gauss shots. :(
Gauss is my best ballistic accuracy-wise and that was even before I fixed my framerate and mouse sensitivity issues. Have you tuned your setup?
the trick is accustoming yourself to leading your targets and getting used to the charge up time of the gauss
This mech being my personal favourite i feel that i must add that having the 2 gauss specific modules makes on hell of a difference, as well as having the kodiak elited for the fast fire skill
dude.. you roasted em... man I thought I was good in my timberwolf... man Ima go buy a Kodiak, thats why I was watching this, considering buying it.. damn man you sold me on it
Well now I know who took my left SideTorso off, lol
classic !! the good ol days of mwo
"You don't have to be the most damage dealer" He said with almost 100 more damage than the next guy in the SERVER, lol. GG man.
I played this build on Mechwarrior 4? back in the day. The last boss walked out radio in "I am Khan so and so." I said uh huh and quad gaussed his CT, boom dead. I think the quickest boss fight I had in any game.
CT.
Nicely done. This kind of build all but requires a light support mech to keep the backstabbers at bay...
love quad gauss, I think I built a 4x gauss dire one time, can't remember
holy crap I recognize some of the names in the first fight

Thank You to MoltenMetal very well done and good build sir.

Gauss ammo does not explode, all other points are valid :)
but it can get destroyed. that was his point. shielding with one arm, when it falls off #neverforget but you still have the ammo in the other arm...
I actually really liked this build
Great Video! Thank You!
just to add for those not knowing, omni ( you can change hard points) mechs in MWO cant change engines, IIC and specially mechs like the kodi, are able. The nightgyr will most likely be able to change out engine also.
ahhh the good old days, is it my imagination or were the graphics better back then?
perry92964
...and when all four could be fried at once! Well, those were the better times!
Guass ammo doesn't explode. The gauss rifle itself is what is vulnerable to crits. I am not sure if the CASE protects the gun, I thought it just protected the ammo in the component
Yeah, it works with Gauss Rifles:
mwo.gamepedia.com/Gauss_Rifle
Case does not protect the ammo or the gun or even the component that it is used in. Instead, it prevents damage from ammo or gauss explosions from transferring to the next component. When ammo is destroyed it deals damage to the structure that the contained ammo equal to the potential damage of the ammo that exploded. 50% of the excess damage is then dealt to the adjacent component closest to the CT unless case is installed with the ammo. Also, while guass ammo doesn't explode or deal damage when it is destroyed, it can take damage and be destroyed like all other types of ammo.
the gun itself is both fragile and explosive; CASE will prevent an exploding gauss rifle from destroying the other one in the ST
i stand corrected thank you
Correction CASE protects the rest of the mech not the location it is stored in. If one gun explodes it will deal damage to the internals of that torso and has the chance to crit something inside the torso as well including the other gun. Where is the XL Engine in the Left and Right Torso?
could you do a tutorial for the actual meta 4 c gauss kodiak?
Hey Awesome video! I was wondering if there are any Mechs in the Shop that can make a 4x Gauss rifle build that would be effective. I'm a little new to the game so I don't have any clan mechs or anything like that. But if there is a Mech in the shop that could work with 4x Gauss that would be great. Thanks!!!!
I've been meaning to try MW:O since it came out in Beta...never got around to trying it
Uh, oldies but goldies. I wonder if this build is still viable within the current meta. It seems kind of trollish, but I do have a KDK-3 equipped with soem UAC's of various calibre. Hm. Let's go find out.
Have they nerfed the more than 2 gauss ?
You said in your outroll that you don't have to do top damage, but you did top damage.
Why not turn on arm lock while you only have torso mounted weapons?
Free arms reduce the amount of mouse movement you need to torso twist
that is not actually true. I have tested both with lock and without and I have to move my mouse the same distance to get the torso to the same spot. The main diff is without lock it is slower to turn the torso.
Fair play if you've done the tests, I wouldn't have the patience. All i know is that free arms feels quicker
do the axe mech or something if its on there i dont have it
I'd like to see 2 ultra 20, 2 ultra 10, 4 small pulse kodi
So, what are the odds I'll see you online if you're a Tier 1 pilot and I'm stuck at Tier 5?
Use arm lock for torso only builds?
James Thomas lol Ik I'm not sure why he doesn't have them locked the extra floaty circle would be distracting I'd think
How do I add modules to my mech?
Modules are an old mechanic that doesn't exist anymore.
@@Baradul Ah thats a shame cheers dude

I call that the grizzly Bear build
Sounds like baradul sounds younger?
check the post date.
Is this still doable?
👍👍👍
geiler build aber, mach doch alpha die ham ja eh nur 8 hitze (inkl heatspike)
Seems fun. /)
erm the spider shots the Jägermech because he has no other target, as soon as the Archer comes in, he switches targets... just saying
SPACE MARINES

The Kodiak is like the newer IIC line, where it doesn't have omnipods but can switch out it's engine size
Thanks ! That's interesting.
It was not intentionally. I was so focused on my target that I just did not see his arm.
The Kodiak is a clan Battlemech, as is the case with the IIC mechs. It's only the Omnimechs which have locked equipment, since they're allowed to swap around their hardpoints.
the Kodiak isn't an omni mech
oh my
This is embarrassing to admit but before I saw your videos I never even noticed that targeting an enemy shows what weapons they have.
Gauss ammo does not explode.
but the Gauss Rifle itself does, and easily, which is what he points out during the video
han gauss first
I made 1023 damage with a twin LBX10 Roughneck today... beat that, quad gauss! Haha 😄
Nothing beats The Bear! Especially, if he's dakka.

Oh, so you could put four of those things on a Kodiak, but not one on an Urbanmech? Laaaame.
pgi should remove these stupid boating limits, let some freedom into the builds
or maybe just have limits for components so if the simultaneous heat for 1 component exceeds a certain amount an increased amount of heat is built up.
gauss ammo doesnt explode!
оn top at the platform.. and noone enemy with LRMS...
Could have won the game by asking the team to drop with you

dualgauss in den rücken ballern und nichmal sorry schreiben..
Will try, this configuration is troll for me ahahahah.
Fuck me, this build ruins lives. Came up against it, am now super salty...
c.a.s.e. doesnt matter for gause...ltp

I ditched my Kodiak because it is useless against experienced players due to its hilarious size as a target. My TBR-A with 4CERLL beats it every day.
