  • I completely underestimated this car's potential. Great little roadster for a really affordable price. These things will eventually be future classic roadsters!

    When I bought mine the previous owner generously left a porsche baseball cap in the storage hub. I wondered why. After a few hours driving around with the roof down on a sunny day I figured it out :)

      I wish I had a cap that day. My head looked like a beetroot after driving with the top down.

    Welcome to the darkside. I got my 2003 Boxster S in March of 2019, Exactly 1 year and 4 days prior to this video going live. It is a great car.

    Jesus dude turn off the generic music during the drive. Nobody wants to hear music in a car review.

    Just be aware of the IMS bearing issue otherwise your reasonably priced 986 could end up being either practically worthless or much more expensive.

      Have you had an IMS problem?

    • @stephenfoster6940
      @stephenfoster6940 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg Park Not personally, but the issue is well documented. I think that fewer than 10% experienced the problem and it wasn't addressed until the 987.2 Boxster. The 996 911 also had this issue.

      Jumping on the IMS bandwagon. The issue is not an issue given the single race bearings which have the issue should be changed along with the clutch. The older double race bearings are a false economy. The double race bearings stretch the timing chains requiring an engine out strip down replacement. The single race bearings are much less involved, just swap with a clutch change.
      This is the reason Porsche didn’t just revert back to the more sturdy double race bearings.
      Responsibilities: Service regularly, drive daily all year round, do not store for extended periods and warm up fully before going over 3000 rpm and you’ll be fine.
      Look out for: low and ultra low mileage cars (avoid completely), service history especially extended gaps 4+ years, match receipts and invoices to servicing intervals to justify history, look for the quality of parts used, Check service stamps against receipts and invoices (you never know if an owner knows someone who can just stamp the book).
      Remember a 20 year old car is exactly that, it is a collection of 20 year old parts with some of them replaced and a low or ultra low mileage car will not have had the chance to break however the amount of standing time gives it the ideal situation for engine parts to fail, especially that IMS bearing sitting half submerged in acidic oil, it’s seals being slowly eaten away meaning that when it is driven even for a few months you’re likely wondering how you could be so unlucky. Basically the previous owner has all but guaranteed you a very hefty repair bill.
      IMS bearing failure statistics, IMS bearings were made by several manufacturers and used in all non turbo and GT3 996 and 986 vehicles, the single race bearings were used from 2003. There was a reported failure rate of around 10%, of these Porsche repaired around 8%. Of the remaining 2% approximately 80% have been changed, possibly multiple times by various cautious owners. The remainder is the current chance of having a vehicle with an issue is 20% of 2% or 0.004. The chances of failure are of course increased if you fail to follow the procedures I mention above.
      Incidentally the failure of double race bearings is generally due to stretched timing chains snapping rather than bearing failure, the results of both timing chain failure and IMS bearing failure are to all intents identical, the double race failures being retro explained as IMS failures after the spate of single race failures, with virtually identical results and a known IMS issue this is an understandably mistaken diagnosis.

      There are affordable fixes for this issue. 99 and earlier cars were not as much affected as they have a dual row bearing. I own 2 99’s and have never had an issue
