That boy in the end gave me tears. His sentiments of being indian as well as chinese makes me feel that adults lose their sense of belongingness no matter what race.
Damn this is a touching story. As an Indian i feel guilty for the people how the government treated them. We are NE Indian and feel the same as Chinese here in the other states as well. Thank you for providing the fact.

I’m Singaporean and I never knew there’s a Chinese community in India! I find it very fascinating seeing ethnically Chinese individuals speaking English with a Tamil accent. It’s really sad that the heritage is disappearing by the day, but I can also understand why people are leaving for a better future. Thank you for the insights!
Well when I was in JB just returned from Singapore for work and I’ve met this one indian lady from Indonesia and yeah she’s a legit Indonesian citizen. I had no idea about their diaspora that spread elsewhere other than Malaysia and Singapore and perhaps Brunei.

As an Indian: Thank you for contributing to the story of India. I understand that everyone strives for a better life, whether in their home country or abroad. I wish you the best, and I also wish for you to know that if you still want to call India one of your home countries then you are more than welcome to do so. Personally, I will always consider you as much Indian as myself. Outside of politics (which I don’t want to talk about), Indians and Chinese get along wherever they live. I have cousins who are married to Chinese women living in America, Canada and Australia. I also know that Indians have been living peacefully in Hong Kong for many generations and are very happy with their Chinese (Cantonese) neighbours. Personally, I studied in Australia and 2 of my closest friends were from China. They were among the best people I have met abroad: always wanting to pay for our dinners and drinks, and being the best hosts whenever I went for dinner with them, and also some of the most genuine and fun guys to get drunk with. Again, without getting into politics, I hope the people of India and China can continue to get along. We share many things in common despite our differences.
No, China and India never get along well you don't need to wish. The same goes for Vietnam and Philippine for the same reason that is China just wants everything belongs to them! Very greedy country. That attitude certailny causes suspicion amonsgt non-chinese communities in those countries. Chinese still worships their former homeland resisting assimilation, setting up their Chinese schools etc after 300 years just pack up and go back to China, no need to worry about everything thatcis not chinese. Your homeland should wellcome you as the sons and daughters have lost, shouldn't they as China is now very rich , 2nd after US, and powerful!
Better life usually means more money, where ever they get significantly more money people want to go there, USA and some western countries knew this, so they attract workers, thats all there to it.

My suspicion is most that left China are the educated and community minded that's why they are willing to build school and continue to donate to all community events. My grandparents left China but I think they always wanted to go back when it "reopens" but it took so many decades and the kids ended up settled already. My granddad was uni educated in HK and his dad was a Judge with generations of wealth and education. My mum's side are also educated and in business. They all are one of the founders in Chinese schools and Chinese social projects in Malaysia. The community funding continues in my dad's generation and I am now also donating money to local causes. My family was believed in helping others, building a good community and we have a good family name / reputation in our town. We were not the super rich but willingly contributed a big portion of our income. But recently I met some Chinese who are not educated or even thinking education is important, just like to party and live day by day then borrow money from anyone they can.... that is a different kind of Chinese that I've never met in my life. 🤦♂️ I have always been a proud Chinese... didn't know stupid Chinese existed.

Friend sent me this video. Interesting to see this. I’m a Canadian born Hakka Chinese. My parents were born in kolkata. Like the interviewees described my grand father owned a restaurant and leather tannery. He was taken to a concentration camp during the sino Indian boarder war where he died. That’s when my dad’s side left. Definitely sad to see some of these ppl feeling trapped.
Oh my goodness! That's crazy. My parents migrated to Australia and my grandparents where in Malaysia before. I didn't know Indians took Chinese there for what? For being Chinese? These barbarians always say China have no human rights? That's why to me, they all say "most Chinese left" but didn't want to say much. Must be something very terrible that they can't even say? Everyone knows Malaysian government don't treat Chinese well as we are discriminate. But people are not afraid to say that.... Anyway to be honest, India is a ST country, I'm glad your family left. I've know many Indians, most I know are what my grandparents use to call them "snakes", very deceiving and always slithering around. Be careful they are always plotting. For example, when Indians moved their business a few doors away, my parents joked that their business will somehow catch fire and claim insurance. I always thought it was a joke. But, after 3 yrs, it happened! And they claimed huge insurance. The fire spread to our business and half burned our stock and even lots of family photos, clothing etc, all gone. Also many other incidences... makes me think they really are what my grandparents says they are.
Oh no. sorry to hear that! My mom was born in Calcutta too! Grandparents used to work there. May be my mom knows your parents :) ! My grandma used to teach at local Chinese School. See my post on the top sharing their story. My grandpa's best friend was the principal of the Chinese school, he was taken by the police in the middle of the night and sent to China/India boarder remote area and left to die, was later saved.. He died few years later at Chinese labor camp during Cultural revolution. crazy time.
@@nancyn1106 , wow indeed crazy time. You're Chinese, Indians want you to died, you're Chinese also taken by new government 😓. Both sides of My grandparents were in Malaysia I think since around 1930s, 40s, no issues. No one taking them to any camps. Both side family I believe wealthy in China. My dad's side, my great grandad was a Judge and family has lots of land. Mum's side her grandma has those lotus feet never said they're rich but judging by their mind set and skills having built up lots of businesses and estates in Malaysian makes me think that is what they've always done back in China. But they all went to Malaysia with very little. Built businesses like grocery shops and rubber plantation, houses etc from ground up. Dad's side I thought it's all just all talk they were rich saying granddad went to uni in HK and that's why he spoke English. But turned out the China government asked my dads siblings who ever want some family land can have a small parcel back. Some uncles went back to China was given some land back but not all the family land. Just some. They all know which areas used to be ours as my grandad took everyone back to see his hometown. We're all settled in Australia now.
@@steph4922 Thank you for sharing! It's amazing how our older generations faced so many challenges, unfair treatments and struggles at these difficult times yet able to come out strong, build successful businesses and set up better lives for the next generation. I can't imagine immigrating to a new country with no money and probably not even speaking the language, while having a whole family to support. It's amazing that your grandparents did so well. We need to tell these brave family stories to the next generation, so they will be inspired when they face difficult times. Our lives today are way too comfortable and we are becoming less resilient. My grandma used tell her WWII and Culture Revolution stories, and said to me that no matter how hard life it is, it will pass. Just stay alive, you can live with more and live with little. She also told me to travel a lot and put my needs first. She sure saw the world, her last international trip was at age 93.
Chinese are the greatest businessmen irrespective where they are. Wherever they are, they brought prosperity to the country. Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippine, Cambodia, Loas still need the Chinese to run its economy. Why India did not grow as fast because the Indian Government ill treated the Chinese and many left India. Otherwise India will have many middle class, similar to other Asian Countries. It is a pity that India miss the opportunity otherwise India would develop at a more faster pace.
why our chinese over sea so chicken , we have been chasing killing by local people even we born on the same land why not stand together to fight back and ask for help around chinese community to buy weapons to self defence instead running away and finally got killed , i hope 1 day our chinese can stand for ourself and fight back from racist

I live in Calcutta / Kolkata and I am almost 60 years old. Chinese community in Kolkata lived in 1 single address - 47, South Tangra Road. It was and still now a Chinese Fort with 6 entrances or gates only and they used to get opened and closed by the community everyday where non-Chinese were forbidden to enter except the labourers who used to work in the tanneries. The tannery process practiced by the Chinese was extremely toxic as a result Govt. made Kolkata Leather Complex some 20 years back under Court order due to tremendous pollution level. The pollution was so high that no one used to buy 2nd hand cars owned by the Chinese since the whole cars used to get corroded in no time. It was so high that the labels on Coca Cola Bottles used to get blackened out with three days sitting on the rack. But the Chinese having very large factories and making tremendous money from Leather product exports never wanted to invest from their earnings to take up a much better and modern facility in the leather complex and hence migrated. The food joints had always been there, they used to be know as Chinese Eateries with excellent taste and fresh food used to be cooked and served in the same place. These places started to become popular when they started to sell Liquor but without any liquor license. Hence the liquor was sold cheap and anyone can also take bottle of his choice and have it there by paying a bottle fee. But all these changed since the Govt. was loosing Excise duty and asked them to take proper Liquor license. That also they felt that the Govt. was against them. There was mismatch with the Chinese sought after lifestyle for big money, flashy cars, costly watches, etc. etc. but their surrounding population was different and only labours used to get very less salaries for doing a hazardous job and they used to get sick after prolonged use of chemicals constantly. Calcuttan's were always very friendly to them and they enjoyed their food and still now they do. I had many school and college batch mates from the community who have otherwise done extremely well since they integrated into Indian community. Problem was with the people who wanted to remain Chinese only. With only education in Chinese schools never learnt the local language and made a Fortress for themselves and remained cocooned in it. Mr. Jimmy the blogger here never ventured out the other part of Kolkata. The Bowbazar and Central Calcutta Chinese population who were in Carpentry and wood works, there were famous Chinese Dentists. The Sunday Morning Chinese Breakfast on Phears Lane, Lalbazar is so famous a lot of people from other parts of India come to visit it. The Chinese school - Ling Liang High School opened in 1949 is still now running well with a lot of students (www.linglianghighschool.com/). Chinese came to India and specifically West Bengal in 1800's as Salt Factory Workers and many stayed back. Mr. Jimmy Your research was very poor or I must say you wanted to say what you said for reasons best known to you.
Exactly Chinese community came here Just to earn money 🤑 I don't know why these people remained very isolated in the city like Kolkata may be they think of them as a superior creature or something. 🤣 Intentionally the didn't tried to indianise themselves and still they are complaining.

Generalization is a very bad thing, my friend. Just because you heard some Chinese people being discriminated in India doesn't mean every Chinese is being discriminated against in India. And please, just please stop being on a moral high ground as if there are no vices of ill-treatment against other races in China. There have been a lot of footage of African community being discriminated against in Guangzhou in China. Also Chinese call us Indians using a very vile, racist word called 阿三. That doesn't mean everyone is a bad apple. So that is why please don't generalize people especially considering yourself from a moral high ground.
@@ArghyadeepPal I never heard of the word 阿三. There is no such word or saying in Chinese and I just confirmed with a few Chinese people. I'm not sure what kind of propaganda media you read that from. Also the Africans being mistreated videos were completely taken out of context or cherry picked. Many of those videos of Chinese mistreating Africans in China were actually debunked including by French fact check website that despite it being anti-China bias outlet. For example, a video that happened years ago in Malaysia where a Black person robbing a store were beaten up by Malaysians were propagated on Western media as an African student getting beaten up by a group of Chinese. Another video showed Chinese restaurant owners fighting against black diners, which was actually under self defense and happened in New York, not in China. This young Chinese boy (son of the owner at this Chinese restaurant) gave a very intelligent politically correct answer when he was asked if he was Chinese or Indian. Smart boy!
The answer that the boy gave at the end is actually very similar to the pledge that indian school students learn everyday, Most people including many indians dont know indian is not an ethnicity it is a nationality anyone with indian citizenship is indian reagrdless of ethinicity we are all equal infront of the law but unfornutely past governments have been unfair to many communities including this one . Sad to see this community decline.

The same is true of Christians in India. They are trying to flee India especially after Modi and the BJP RSS.. They don't feel safe in India anymore! The Parsis have left, the Jews have left. Oh, so sorry to hear. Yes I agree I don't know why Chinese are always so hard working, so successful and so many countries are bad to us. I'm aussie Chinese, more and more Chinese come here. The good thing is the government are not directly against us. If someone tries to directly discriminate our kids, they will surely hear from me. I will not let anyone be rude to my kid, white or brown. I'm a well educated rich Chinese (my grandad went to Malaysia and my dads siblings studied in UK and Canada. Most families settled in Aus), my kids are just as good as any other Aussies. We need to stand up. No more running away from country to country.
As a Filipino-Chinese-Japanese-East Indian-Spanish-Canadian I would recommend for Chinese Indians to Immigrate Malaysia , Singapore , The Philippines ( Where I was born ) , Canada ( Where I live ) , USA since there are many diverse ethnicities. in those countries
Actually India is not a bad place. My friends enjoy their tours there. I imagine the elderly ppl finding it a great place to retire. My grandpa came from China too. Now we are settled happily in Singapore. To me, home is where the heart is. ❤️
i'm pretty sure they would much rather be with their kids in canada or wherever they've immigrated to, but the reality is they're old and they will only be an extra mouth to feed. whereas if they stay behind in India their kids can send a little bit of CAD home and it'd be considered enough for a months worth of expenses in india.
I beg to differ. With a hostile government, it is difficult to stay. The place is becoming decadent and the local council make no effort to repair them. You don’t see any future. There is minimal development. Unlike you the lucky one, to find a job here is very tough.

In Canada, it’s not easy to prosper as well. Cost of living is high. Many Hakka Chinese open restaurants to promote the Hakka food, but that is a difficult business too.
Good video and well edited. Thanks for sharing with all of us former or current Hakka Chinese who used to live in Calcutta. As a former Chinese who lived here 50 years ago ( and all guests in the video were my Peimay schools mates too) I would say who stayed back are also the lucky ones too they enjoy easy life in India as opposed to most of us that left India, we have a hard time to adjust the new country and blend in with the local population just like our previous ancestors who settled down here 100 years ago. Basically one has to work hard and will be rewarded, its my advice,no hard feeling. I am so amazed you have a solid guts like a rhino to visit India. When I was in Calcutta, I tried to my best to get first hand information from those who still live there, but, perhaps due to the "circumstances", I was only able to obtain "some" information, nothing much though. Your assustance would be greatly appreciated. For your info, I travelled to Singkawang, Indonesia (great Overseas Hakka city), Sabah (where even the natives speak Hakka language) and Sarawak (closely knitted) , Malaysia, Thailand (some settlements with majority Hakka decentants), Burma (Myanmar) where there are still a great number of Hakka decentants living there, Tahiti and obviously, Mauritius, Reunion and Madagascar. Appreciate your assistance in this matter, if you could and with continuing best wishes, all the best.

China, Pakistan and Bangladesh are absolute friends and absolute brothers and always come forward in each other's danger.

And last but not least the little boy at the end of video is the great grandson of Mr. Chen who was a great supporter of KMT Taiwanese government, also a well respected local Chinese citizen, thank you.
Why don't the Chinese go home to Taiwan or mainland China or Hong Kong or Macau but instead to go godforsaken places like Canada or Australia?
I am reseaching on the history of the overseas Hakka people and had been to your place of birth, Calcutta, twice. I would very much appreciate it if your goodselves could advise me as to the credibility of the book "the deoli wallahs" (the true story of the 1962 Chinese-Indian internment) written by Joy Ma and Dilip D'Souza, publiced in February 2020.
For Gods sake stop stereotyping India, Calcutta is the poorest part of India apart from Delhi, Varanasi
Overall India as a country is very diverse with a lot of nice places, if the Chinese setlled in Southern India instead of Calcutta their lives would have been far better
India is an asian powerhouse economy where poverty is rapidly decreasing and is at 18% in 2022 according to United Nations data
India is a G20 member good bye!said India does not have indoor plumbing? Stop dreaming and living in a paradise, as a Jewish Persian I would it was you barbaric brits who destroyed India along with Muslims, ancient India was admired by Greeks
I am a Zoroastrian Parsi living in India whose ancestors had migrated to India 1500 years back for taking shelter when the Muslims invaded Persian Empire and defeated the Sasannians who were the last of our great ancestors that had made Persia as one of the most prosperous empires and ancient civilizations. We Parsis have always been grateful to India for the kindness they showed us and we cannot tolerate anyone blindly insulting our country because we Parsis have also become Indians. Not only us but even Persian nationalists in Iran who hate the barbaric Islamic regime have admiration for India because we and Indians both belong to ancient civilizations. While it is true that India has many problems but that does not mean whatever you say is true. Infact your ideas about India are not only rubbish and filled with fantastic but you are a racist. Yes you are completely a cruel racist who is displaying absolute racism towards India. Listen, people like you are no more different than those white supremacist groups or the far right zionists infact you are 100000 times worse than them. You are basically blindly brainwashed by Chinese communist propaganda and therefore you cannot accept the fact that India is progressing, you believe in fake conspiracy theories and the fact that Russia is a great superpower where in reality the villages in the interior parts of Russia have huge problems with indoor plumbing, defecation outdoors is far common
I am Tibetan.
@@wyliamulayye7534There were Hakka communities in the Caribbean, also. I was born & raised in Jamaica, but now live in the US. Most of the Jamaican Hakkas moved to Toronto or to Florida.
Such a wise boy! His closing speech is wow. We are all humans and brothers and sisters regardless of where we are from, what colour our skin is.
Back in the early 80's we lived in Calcutta and frequented Tangra alot. Very sad to see, my parents had a few Chinese friends and we spent alot ot time with them. Lots of reasons to leave, economics, racism, lack of opportunity. good video.
14:13 I am Singaporean Chinese. I encourage this young man to come to Singapore to live and work. It is very easy for Indian nationals to get work permit in Singapore due to the CECA Agreement with India. We have a population of 75% Chinese and 10% Indian. You will adapt easily in Singapore. English is the lingua franca here. And Tamil (southern India language) is an official language. Ancestors of Chinese in Singapore came from Southern Chinese provinces. So we have Hakka Chinese too, from Fujian and Guangdong provinces. They settled here 100 years ago. Also the little boy at the tail end of the video, come Singapore to study. 😊 i went to New Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Mumbai in 2011, free and easy. I was never harmed. It was fun. Egg Biryani and jai, the tea, was delicious. Love India, and will be back next time, to the South.
What attitude Singapore treats towards mainland Chinese? I am Chinese from mainland China. Southern anhui province. Kinda curious about it.
@@saisirvous7363 We treat mainland Chinese with respect. And we talk, play and eat with them everyday. We get along well.
You should also visit the Northeast next time you come to India.

好喜歡弟弟最後講的那些話。 很感動
Hi ! I'm from Northeast India and i have met many Chinese Friends also when I was in North India while doing my graduation. They are really nice and we have many things in common yes it's true. I have many friends from all around the world. WE HAVE One thing in common HUMANITY. We want to stay peacefully No matter in which country which state which place we are.
2014年我到過這加爾各答的China Town。還在那裏和一位客家老鄉一起吃雲吞麵。是中國人的印度徒弟開的。

As a person who grew up in that locality, I feel happy that there has finally been some coverage provided on the situation of the Chinese living there. Although I would disagree with some of the views expressed in the video, it is a fact that majority of the people there think like that.
i'm a Chinese-Indonesian and thank you for actually sharing this.. i can't believe how relatable the situation is with us to some extend

I think now there are 2 family lest that too I m not sure all my Chinese friends were fluent in nepali but Chinese guys from tengra Calcutta were good in hindi.
