Except that Ali’s first fight with Joe was a once in a lifetime fluke with Ali underestimating Joe (this happens a lot when you legitimately feel like NOBODY can whoop you) and Joe literally fought his absolute BEST fight that night. My theory anyway with the rest of the trilogy as evidence(plus Ali and a lot others thought he won but that knockdown had CRAZY effect worldwide lol). Let’s also not forget Ali was forced to throw 3yrs of his fighting prime away due to bullshit prior to their fight.

Fun fact George Foreman in those 8 rounds against Ali landed more punches on Ali than Wilder did in all 3 Fury fights combined (30 rounds). Foreman 194 punches landed, Wilder 177. He landed more punches than Usyk did in either AJ fights as well. By the way this is not saying Ali is bad, this shows how amazing Ali was to not go down once. It also shows how much more they threw and the accuracy of these greats, Foreman was not even known for his stamina or punch rate at all back then.
A lot of that has to do with Foreman knowing how to jab and body punch really well. But Ali's endurance was insane, I can't think of many heavyweights that could take those body shots. And enough head shots landed to give Foreman a victory over pretty much any other heavyweight at the time. So the crazy thing is that Foreman's plan worked, he executed it well, and it would have gotten him a victory over pretty much anyone else. At the same time, Ali had way less room for error than he usually did. A few more head shots in the early rounds and I think he would have been down.
@@TheModernMartialArtist yep, that's a perfect analysis as always and as you say many people think of Foreman as just a really hard puncher, but he was much more than that.

He says in his book he couldn't. George did too good a job cutting him off. According to Ali, he was literally unable to dance. I think most would have given up at that point if their entire style had been rendered useless over a few rounds!
@@youtoo2233 if he could why didn't he, that sounds like a much more sensible idea than getting punched 194 times by one of, if not the hardest punchers of all time. If it was easier for Ali to do a James Braddock style win, he would have espcially as Foreman had much worse stamina than Max Bear, making stick and move even more attractive proposition. But Ali didn't, because he couldn't against Foreman especially at this point in his career.
This is my Favorite Boxing Fight of All Time. The Hype, the buildup, the Fighters, the Showmanship, the stage, David and Goliath, and the unexpected and iconic outcome. Ali’s comeback arc is the greatest story in sports history. It peaked with his victory over Foreman. If his career had ended after that fight, it would’ve been truly storybook.

19:12 one other thing to mention is how unbelievably accurate Ali is here, every single punch lands exactly where he wants even though foreman is stumbling forward and to the groud, Ali's reaction time is so great he does not throw that last punch as he knows Foreman is going to the ground.
I don't think every punch he threw here hit foreman but when it did miss foreman he just used the missed punch to set up another, it was a thing of graceful brutality
Ali really controlled this fight. His speed was too much for Foreman, and if it had gone to the scorecards Ali would have won as most of Foreman's punches missed or did little damage. By the third round Foreman was just swinging wildly, where Ali was methodically targeting (and hitting) Foreman.

Yes : beautiful improvisation under the circumstances, showing yet again, HOW Ali NEVER stopped thinking as fighter .
Truth is very few knew the strength of Ali, much stronger than people realized which is why you see him manhandling George quite a bit
he wasn't that strong he was just incredibly accurate and good at breaking rhythm, so those laser-pointed punches would land when his opponents least expected it, which made them always devastating
if ali had been a natural powerhouse like foreman then he'd have at the very least one body in his record

I really needed to because it deserved it. It was crazy going through both of their books because they both give round by round accounts and often brought up the same moments. But they saw things completely differently, until the end of course.

To the world, it was a boxing match. But these two warriors were employing wrestling/judo and Muay Thai techniques. It was truly a Mixed Martial Arts fight at the heart of it. What an era.

@@TheModernMartialArtist The fight was originally scheduled for September 24th, but Foreman got cut in training. That extra month being in Africa helped Ali. He had time to win the country over.

I mean, he didn’t survive those shots… Ali died early of Parkinson’s and was a shell of his former self by the time he hit the age of 45. And every medical doctor on the face of the planet believes, but cannot prove, that he got that from boxing…
But he died a king.
Ali had one of the greatest chins in heavyweight history and he was impossible to hit in combination. To see Foreman hit him with combinations is incredible. But he took it. Archie Moore said years afterward that he saw Ali was an escape artist of the highest quality.

Ali was the greatest, as Tyson said, he would do whatever it took to win. He had all the skills, was incredibly fast and had an amazing boxing brain, but it was his willpower that that took him to another level. Any other boxer would buckle in this fight, with the heavy punches Foreman threw, but Ali was willing to go the 15 rounds.
Yeah Ali was prepared to die in that ring! He paid a heavy price to acheive greatness in the second half of his career....Amazing comeback story. It was like David & Goliath!

These Foreman -worshipping clowns .Foreman was a headcase , channelling his hero, Sonny Liston, so-Big bad George was easily conned into punching himself out and then , exhausted, and with zero boxing skills , he was easily KOed…Foreman didn’t land anything of consequence the entire fight while Ali hit him with straight right leads . Foreman was a great puncher with a great left jab- but he had psychological problems and no defense or stamina, as light-punching Jimmy Young showed. @@stavros693000
Foreman never went 15 rounds but once
Ali's speed and accuracy was just on another level! It was on display again for all to see in this fight and even though he spoke to Foreman, took his best shots and talked more, the punches still did proper damage. Foreman looked tired by round 4, his face was starting to swell while Ali was landing more and more clean shots while forman was hitting body or air. He took Foreman to deep waters and drowned him🙈. I know Ali is the self proclaimed greatest but when he was focused on proving a point and did the necessary training, he was just about invincible. He stopped the monster who everyone thought would kill him. It has to count for something! One also has to considering that he wanted to fight anyone and everyone, sometimes multiple times if needed. Legend!

George Foreman was 40-0 with 37ko nobody gave Ali a snowballs chance in gell, but Ali predicted what all he could and couldn't do, he was confident. He said George was slow, plodded around the ring like a mummy, telegraphed his punches, Ali dissected George like a surgeon.

Foreman was too overconfident and barely trained due to injury. He even prayed to not get Ali killed. Imagine how much could Foreman train with that attitude, He simply had no plan. He lost because he was exhausted fastly. He had Ali at the 7th round I guess but couldn't finish since he himself was tired.
Funny fact. With longer arm reach, Ali was 6'3" 216 lb and Foreman was 6'3" 220 lb. But Ali was considered as the dancing butterfly and Foreman as "Big" 😉

Don't know their true dimensions, but it is obvious there was not much of a size difference. Same with Ali vs. Liston. Ali was a big heavyweight for his time.

This is what the British announcer said about Ali "the Dancing Master with the Lightening Quick Hands" what people need to do is listen to the play by play announcers as their calling the fight instead of hooping and hollering in the background.
I've been watching boxing for a long time and I've seen thousands of different boxers but nobody made boxing look as beautiful and graceful as Ali. If i could only watch one person's fights for the rest of my life theres no question it would his.

Ali is my idol as a revolutionary who put his time and money where his mouth was and denied the US the sadistic pleasure of killing him at war in Vietnam. God tier bravery and character.
The cool thing is that Ali would have spent his time touring army bases and other safe jobs like that. He refused to go on behalf of the people they were sending to the front line, taking a stand for them.

I always see Ali fanboys say that (don’t get me wrong, I love Ali too, but not as a humanitarian. I love him as a boxer and a champion), but I’m yet to have anyone actually point me to an example of him actually doing that. Usually people always say “Oh he helped build a hospital in Ziere!” But that’s not true. He never gave a dime to that hospital, he only visited it.

Whether that's conditioning, heat, or excessive force expelled trying to KO is hard to say; probably all factors.
Interesting to learn that it was a tactic Ali used in sparring to test his opponents. You definitely needs tons of experience to use a strategy this risky against one of the most powerful men of all time!

He was drugged. Ali had to win because if he lost there would have been a riot and massacre of epic proportions. This was in a murderous African country that hated George and loved Ali. I remember this fight well. I was (and am) an Ali fan, but I could not ignore the power of foreman. Every punch, if connecting clean, could do severe damage. He was truly a beast in the ring, completely unafraid and fighting with gladiator abandon.
No one was more shocked than I when Ali got hit, again and again, yet somehow remained on his feet. It is a testament to his will and resolve, and a great chin as well.
After he weathered the 3rd and 4th round, I knew how it was going to go, and began to feel bad for George. He had been outfought, and outsmarted, and was going to pay the ultimate price for it.
Surely one of boxing’s greatest contests, by two of its icons…
Ali didn’t get hit… that’s how he made it …He was prepared for the body shots and nothing landed to the head . This wasnt a great contest and Foreman wasn’t even a good boxer, though he had great punching power.
It’s crazy how a younger Ali knocked out Archie Moore one of Foreman’s trainers and defeated Foreman with Moore in the corner watching

This is the best in depth analysis of this iconic fight ever ; unlike several others - it highlights how many good hits Forman actually landed onto Ali ; Watching the complete fight a good few times , it was difficult to see many of Gorges punches land at all !

Tyson/Douglas was a bigger upset than Ali/Foreman
Ali fought a really smart fight against Foreman. He let Foreman tire himself out in every round, and Ali managed to steal 5 of the 7 rounds (as I scored it) in the last 30-45 seconds of those rounds. He'd come to life late and land more good punches in the last 30 seconds of the round than Foreman had for the first two and a half minutes. Ali's speed was too much for Foreman. Most of Foreman's punches either missed or did little damage. Just like Frazier and Norton gave Ali fits in their stylistic matchups, Ali was all wrong for Foreman. It was a great fight, but Ali owned it.

I would absolutely LOVE some videos on Foreman's techniques and how he fought. Everyone talks about second career foreman, but never first career when it comes to how he fights. I don't really care for cross guard foreman that much, but long guard foreman was INCREDIBLE! please talk about it!

They robbed Ali's potential prime between 67 - 69.
Ali would have been frighteningly good - great - during that period. If you look at his last few fights before the ban he was really becoming an absolute monster. So fast, but with enough power to put his opponents down on the canvas. The fact that he came back after so much time off and won the title back is amazing. The Ali that took the title from Foreman was great, but nowhere near as great as he would have been in 1968 and 1969. And if he didn't have that time off he would have been sharper in the early and mid 70's - think about that!

I think it was Ali's size which almost matched Foreman but was 4 pounds less with similar heights and reach that made him in this fight. He could tie up Foreman unlike Norton or Frazier. That is what he did in desperate and non desperate times. Over time the guy with the bigger muscles had to pay for carrying that extra weight. Foreman lifts weights in training, usually a no-no especially in them days. I think Foreman was out on his feet in rounds 5,6,7, and 8.
Norton was actually slightly taller than Ali and physically stronger but he didn’t have the chin or style for Foreman.
I remember watching this fight. Ali was my idol and he looked like he was losing and (to my childhood untrained eye) not even trying.
Little I knew Ali was experiencing early stages of Parkinson's, not being able to evade punches with the agility of early years, he invented the "rope a dope" to use the ropes like in 8:21 where if he had been standing and had to resist the impact, he could have been knocked out, but he just left his body go as back as possible in the slightly lose ropes, letting the ropes absorb part of the impact. Something similar in 8:39 and 11:48 Ali was making Foreman feel tired and instead of the attempts of devastating power Foreman was trying, Ali was slowly mining him down. By the time Ali knocked Foreman down, Foreman was too tired and lacked the stamina to stand up on time. Foreman had the strength to stand up and fight again, but it took him too long.
In the words of Ali himself, every champion wrote his page in the book of boxing, but Ali wrote complete chapters.

I remember thinking this fight was All getting beat up for 5-6 rounds, then flipping it and winning. Then I watched it and was surprised that Ali was always in the fight and winning exchanges.
Yeah, I'm not sure how that narrative got started but everybody who hasn't actually watched the fight thinks that's how it went. I thought the same before my first time watching it.

Basically like how Saudi Arabia throws a ton of money to host boxing bouts now, like Fury vs Ngannou.
@@drinfernodds Plus, Don King couldn't get the funding or the venue for the fight in the United States. Or anywhere else for that matter.
Ali’s approach reminds me of some Musashi quotes and duels. Musashi would show up late to duels as he knew it’d frustrate his opponents - Ali took every chance he got to frustrate Foreman via trash talk. Musashi also advised breaking up one’s rhythm and the rhythm of the opponent - another thing Ali did here. Ali also used his own stuff, like taking all those punishing shots on the ropes. Something he trained for, but no doubts that it was another F U to Foreman who was obviously a hard puncher.
It’s also surprising to see the inspiration from other martial arts…Foreman’s pawing from Judo, and those Karate style blocks from Ali. I know from my experience that some Karate blocks aren’t necessarily blocks per se: they are more like redirecting incoming blows.
I could keep gushing…but this was a pretty neat analysis video. Makes me want to see more style/fight analyses.
