Oliver Reed discusses Shelley Winters and equality - with spectacular ending!

  • Here's an interview with an obviously 'refreshed' Ollie. This time he discusses his infamous chat-show showdown with Shelley Winters and shares his thoughts on gender equality and growing old.
    Naturally, being an Oliver Reed interview, this ends in utter chaos, and you can clearly hear interviewer Roger Bowns suppressing giggles...

    He often played scary characters and like all hard drinking men could make a mess out of his personal life, yet he was direct, he was refreshingly candid, he was generally gracious to the crews he worked with and deeply committed to his craft. His last role, in "Gladiator", was a fitting farewell to a fine actor.

Really enjoyed his on screen presence in all his movies, but his off screen persona was off the charts. +ladydi4runner I'm also a HUUUGE Ollie fan and I agree with what you stated, but during a 1992 interview ("Wild Thing") Ollie was asked if he was looking for new acting roles, and he gave a long pause, then in a very melancholy way he said "The British film industry is dead, like many of my friends.' You could see his lip quivering a bit, and a tear developed. He was 54 at the time, so I'd imagine he was a bit lonely and reflective, and it was a bit sad to see. But, Ollie was the epitome of a true original who was as introspective and intelligent as he was unpredictable and full of life.

      @@cheshirekat528 You're thinking of a different person, this guy drank to his death and tarnished his potential till the end. • @cheshirekat528
      @cheshirekat528 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ltisenotem I appreciate your comment and opinion, but I do know who I was talking about. I am very familiar and a big fan of Oliver Reed. I simply meant that he was first and foremost a performer. He died in a pub after drinking to much and arm wrestling sailors who were most likely quite a bit younger than him,he was living up to his reputation. In the end he spent his last day alive drinking and entertaining the other people in the pub, giving them a good show. While he may not have been happy about feeling like he had to behave this way, he still did, because it was his job to drink and act the fool.
      The happiness I was referring to was that he spent his last years with his wife and from what I have read and heard in interviews she knew who he was and accepted and loved him despite his demons. She was with him in the pub, so he at least died with someone who loved him for who he was, for better or worse.

    • @ltisenotem
      @ltisenotem ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cheshirekat528 I think we have severely different perspectives on the same situation. I've seen drunks entertain people to their death, it's a miserable existance. I think you've confused the joy he brought others while being plastered as some kind of joy he nurtured within, but that's simply never the case with an alcoholic.
      .
      I think people often glamorize others being drunk/drugged and playing the fool for their entertainment, gladly it's not as constantly like that anymore but still enough. It's beliefs like yours that it's anyones "job" to get drunk and be a fool for entertainment that enables trainwrecks like this. Clapping and laughing and encouraging them in their unhealthy stupor

    • @cheshirekat528
      @cheshirekat528 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ltisenotem I guess I didn’t word my thoughts clearly. I do not have the belief that someone getting drunk and acting like a fool should be considered a form of entertainment. I was speaking to his mind set, he felt that it was his job to behave that way or at least that is what he has said in interviews.
      I was not and do not glamorize anyone causing themselves harm to get a laugh.
      I myself have seen my fair share of what drug and alcohol abuse can do to someone and the people they love, and there is nothing glamorous about it. No, I don’t think his behavior in public was something that brought him joy in his personal life.
      As I said, the happiness/joy came from being with people who loved him and accepted him for him and didn’t need him to drunk to appreciate him. Yes he was an alcoholic and had some internal conflicts, but he was also able to find some form of contentment and happiness while being the drunken fool that he felt the outside world expected him to be.

On one occasion he was staggering out of a chinese restaurant and he fell against the table I was sharing with some work colleagues and his elbow went straight into a bowl of food (chow mein I think) spilling it all over the table. He was really apologetic and offered to pay the bill for the whole party. We declined and had a laugh with him and he promised to buy as all a drink should we meet again as he staggered off with a flamboyant fair well. I encountered him again a week later in a pub (The Jamaica Inn in Guernsey, which was his local), but unfortunately he didn't remember me. I always had, and will always have, a great respect for Oliver Reed. He was a forceful, genuine actor and, perhaps, one of the greatest entertainers of 'himself' and anyone smart enough to get what he was on about. It was all a laugh to Oliver. He sort of shared the opinion of acting that Robert Mitchum did; not to be taken too seriously in the scale of professions out there; but full of opportunities for those who could do it well.
    Oliver loved a drink and did that well too. The only time I've been disgusted by Michael Parkinson was when he, infamously, lectured Oliver, on-air, about his drinking. What a rude, liberty. Parkinson took it as a slur on his precious show rather than just run with it and let it become a topic that Oliver wanted to talk about or not, seriously or not, and then move on. If Oliver had tried to hide the fact he was drunk then he would have made the huge mistake, instead of Parkinson.
    Oliver Reed's very name means hedonism, enjoyment and fun to me. Dean Martin made millions from his schtick of being a heavy drinker, which he wasn't. Oliver was a heavy drinker and, so what, he excelled at acting, was a decent gentleman, most of the time and was true to himself in public and private life. Yet, this charming man was vilified and put down by stuffy British TV hosts and tabloid writers for most of his professional, and all too short, life.
    On the other hand, Shelley Winters was always a poor actor, an irritating interviewee and was notoriously difficult to work with on-set. If ever an 'actress' needed a good stiff drink before opening her mouth, it was the late Shelley Winters. Although Oliver would never say so, publicly, the difference between them resembled Einstein trying to talk to a chimpanzee. VALE Oliver Reed, you were with us for a mere, but memorable 'moment'. Cheers, BH

      Monumental self-righteousness nearly always includes a good slice of vanity; two character flaws one would not expect from a truly decent, humble representative of any faith.

      Scott Morrison That's certainly reasonable, but have you watched a lot of Reed's interviews? He's often like shockingly sloppy drunk, but it's clear at the end of the day that he's just a difficult pain in the ass even when sober. I don't know what qualifies "troll" but like I said I think he's very aware they're offended and even laughing at him, he just doesn't give a s as he's too busy mocking them.

    • @ClickKlack43
      @ClickKlack43 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Scott Morrison You're definitely right in the sense that it's not fully realized or premeditated performance art, but would you classify Andy Kaufman as a troll? I might say Reed or especially Kaufman had "proto-troll" like characteristics, but I guess the idea of targeted trolling is kind of new.

    • @ClickKlack43
      @ClickKlack43 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Scott Morrison I agree. It's become more refined over the years but there were always people doing it intuitively. And, maybe I wouldn't put Kaufman and Reed in quite the same class of performer, but they both have that aspect of social disruption, sabotage. Kaufman in a more self-aware artistic way, Reed in a more of an abrasive character way. I mean, think about it, Reed is practically a real life embodiment of Tony Klifton. Hahaha!

Unfortunately for them Oliver came out with a 12 gauge shotgun and started shooting at them, whether he actually aimed at them is uncertain, but they literally shit themselves and the pilot landed as quickly as possible to avoid being blown out of the sky! The slip off the chair looked totally intentional to me...this is the guy who could drink 30 beers and balance on one hand on top of the bar.
