Constantly shopping for new bags or designer items allows viewers to live vicariously through these luxury influencers. The problem is that doing so creates great financial stress for the creator. It also sets the stage for creating addictive behaviors within oneself. Some people will not have the insights, internal strength or character to see this. We all need to remember not to show off our debt, but instead show off the size of your heart and your character instead. Great review and kudos to you for speaking the obvious and saying what needed to be said.
I have absolutely felt that pressure in the past. And tbh it still exists. I just know that ultimately buying for video views doesn’t work, and isn’t sustainable. The past 2 years I wasted a lot of money on dumb stuff (like that red Chanel bag th-cam.com/video/0j5oncL8viA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DbrX6VwBcO2CbbP6 ) bc I truly didn’t need anything else and was just shopping out of compulsion.
I always thought it was so hypocritical for people to speak negatively about people who were flashy and gaudy because they were trying to “look rich”. They would then turn around and post an “old money aesthetic” video. Why are you cosplaying as rich?
I have definitely bought designer bags because I envisioned the future me as better than who I am. I lacked confidence. I wanted to garner respect and love and felt that the only way was to look better than everyone else, then maybe people won't notice how small I am. Absolutely wrong reasons and unfortunately many have the same reason. I've absolutely gone in debt for it before. Now, I only buy what I like, designer or not because I see my worth and realize that no matter what I carry - I am worthy. If a stranger wanted to treat me badly because I'm not wearing a designer, I would literally put them in their place because nothing can shake my confidence now and I have NOTHING to prove to others because I have proven everything to MYSELF. The problem with a lot of luxury influencers is that they showcase a life that seems like the dream, they get respect and 'love' and it all feels tied into WHAT they have. So I LOVE this quitting happening now, because now - we can all finally be authentic and buy things because we LIKE it and work on our inner worth.
I had a little bit of that when I was younger and first getting in to luxury, but that myth was QUICKLY dispelled upon meeting some of the people at the top. They are no different or better than us. As a matter of fact- a lot of them are worse bc they have more latitude to be mediocre!! Often they face very limited consequences when they fail....All that is to say, that I learned in my early 20s that they are not to be aspired to. I just focused on what made me happy and what made me feel/look good on my own terms
Very good points! These influencers are so shallow. Selling their bags, just because it got to popular. Classism, like you said. They say things like that while driving fancy cars, living in mansions and wearing luxury jewelry (in that video!). For me, I love bags. Nobody I know is into luxury bags; they do not care. Most people don't care what bags you wear. And these influencers bought the bags for the wrong reasons and are now selling for the wrong reasons; so they did not learn anything. They keep only their Birkins and call it quite luxury :D I for my part, loovvee beat uo vintage bags, especially< Louis Vuitton. Most people think it is trashy, too many logos. But I love the cute flowers, I love the texture and the fun designs. I don't want all these boring quite luxury bags with delicate leather.
I think it’s fine to no longer like bags or logos- there was a time when I didn’t, and that could happen again. Maybe they still love their cars or jewelry now? Good for them 🤷🏽♀️
I buy bags for the touch, feel, and look. I love leather, so to me, it's about the craftsmanship, feel, and look of the bag. I just love bags lol. I buy contemporary and some luxury brand bags. Example: Bvlgari serpenti bags are not popular, but i LOVE the feel and craftsmanship of their bags. I'm not buying them because of the price, brand, or whether they are popular or not. Most ppl don't even recognize those bags out in real life unless they are into luxury. They are leather bags made with jewelry. They still plate the hardware with gold and palladium. I didn't buy 2 of them for recognition if that makes sense.
The Serpenti are beautiful! And I'm glad to hear that you found a relatively under-the-radar brand that suits your tastes. That to me is so much cooler than having the it/classic thing on everyone else's wishlist (plz do not read as shade, NOT SHADE!)
@KWSHOPS amen!!!! No i completely agree!!! I think the most popular bags i own are the reverse pochette metis (which is the most practical bag ever), Y sunset in croc embossed leather size medium, & a black chanel 19 which ironically, i don't carry as much. I just bought an APC grace box bag and was shocked how luxury it felt. We have some pretty amazing contemporary brands out there as well who provide luxury level craft-- without the insane price.
I know I am in the minority but some of the creators were being fake. I would watch some of them and just know that once the video is put out there, they were returning or selling whatever it was they just said was great. It's okay to say I bought this and didn't like it, but that didn't ever seem to be the case.
People online can be fake sometimes 🤷🏽♀️ but when I take in content from other TH-camrs, I just make sure to center my own needs and perspective and use there’s as a data point
So happy you shared your perspective. I share my purchases and bags as well and it’s very easy to get caught in the trap of shopping just to share. I promised myself that if I don’t love it… it stays in the store. Nothing wrong with admiring or sharing without buying.
I’ve noticed many finance channels doing this thing where they condemn people for having luxe. Comments like you stated “living above your means” or trying to empress others. What if I just like something?
just ick. Of course yes, some people are partaking for reasons I disagree with, but I felt like the finance channels took a bit too much pleasure in paint us all with so broad of a brush. Stop trying to count peoples pockets!!
Exactly and we are ALL influenced by someone or something. And we all like and support what we like. Gaming, financial literacy, gambling, fast cars, travel, budgeting, couponing, etc. it gets annoying when people condemn you for buying what you like but they spend their money on things that I wouldn’t… so what’s the point. Just live and let live.❤
You made some great points. I have been streamlining my collection. I carry the same handbag everyday. I switch out some of the slgs every week so I can use them all. It’s good to see you back. 🙂
I really like how intentional your purchases have been. I think you are right that some of this content does come across as collector/hobby by other creators. I like listening to your take on pieces. It is so helpful. 💖
Yes! Loved this video, both constructive and respectful! Some of the commentary around this topic has been so rude and catty. The hypocrisy of those who felt offended by others decisions "because they were telling others what to do" , then went on to the very thing they got angry about in the first place. TH-cam and social media in general encourage a culture of excess and in my opinion, I think a lot more content creators have issues regarding their shopping habits but either can't or don't want to see it. I'm not a fan of the phrase "do what makes you happy" because not everything that "makes you happy" is good for you. Anyway, that's just my perspective. We all have a right to choose, and at the end of the day, it's just stuff.
🙌🏽 omg I simply *could not* with the outrage. The US is weirdly puritanical about certain things. Like there is a pedestal that we’re supposed to aspire towards- but we’re not worthy of actually attaining it? …anyway, speculating on the financial sitch of strangers is wild to me. I simply CANT 🫣
I couldn't agree more! I haven't bought into the hype of luxury myself and I feel a twinge of empathy for people that have painted themselves into that niche in their branding. They're stuck, unless thay change their messaging. It's totally OK to mix high and low, to buy the look for less and still be having that 'it' moment. I do really feel sorry for Niki who suddenly claims that she wishes she never published content in line with YT algorithms because now she feels used somehow. What she's now proclaiming as a wake up to her true self, may be just another phase or leg in her personal evolution, or even joining another group think mindset. The only reason for an influencer to buy and promote something, is a genuine authentic reason and if not, viewers can feel it and that will get old fast.
I saw she posted a follow up video I haven’t seen it yet. But “feeling used” by the social media algorithms? I can 100% relate to that, part of the reason I quit instagram.
And you’re completely right about the niche being hard to pivot away from. Coach has been having a moment in this past year but it’s been my experience that less expensive bags and other items, just don’t get the views
Good morning Katherine. So happy to see you! Introspection is good advice, instead of buying on impulse! I am asking myself questions, before, purchasing things I want so I will not have regrets later. Current new Luxury bags are very pricey and lack quality control. The styles lack style as well, so I agree with you. Difficult to shop for other people. We really should not project our taste onto what they would like. Hope to see you soon.
Thanks so much! Glad to be back 💕 I only shop preloved so I don’t really worry about quality in the same way, but I’ve done introspection and I think it’s ok to enjoy this as a hobby with moderation. I have what I love already, and add pieces as needed ….(I bought a replacement Tom ford last month 🎉)
True true it’s all about utility and taste, which is why I still love my LV monograms and completely disregarded the quiet luxury trend in that sense .. also I just wish Nikki would keep her Chanel’s because they suit her !!! 😂❤
I have my quiet days, and I have my loud days - it depends, on what I'm doing, where I'm going, or how I feel! And I 100% agree. She looks incredible with the Chanel aesthetic. Once I started trying to buy them for myself I found they didn't fit me...in a way I can't explain.
I’m of the school of thought “do what makes YOU happy” my only aim is to have a staple collection, a bag for each occasion that fit my lifestyle… I have no desire to have thousands of bags to impress nobody because I don’t take pictures or go a lot of places.
Great video and appreciate you taking a counterpoint to some of the content out there. Admittedly I am struggling with the concept that fashion isn’t a representation of personal expression at 11:31. I understand and can appreciate the assertion when talking about individual ‘material things’. But would counter that fashion by definition is broader than when you think about the idea of creating someone “look”…. Looks are broader than pieces. Pieces just complete a look. So, to say someone couldn’t be inspired to create a look or get exposure to styles discounts the impact that even luxury has had a hold on us. That’s why people copy things and dupes are sold… To get a look. It’s valid that we put too much stress on the material but hope we can also recognize we wouldn’t be talking about that stuff if didn’t influence our looks. As a person that couldn’t really afford to create the looks I really wanted earlier in my adulthood until the last few years, I get why luxury can mean something. Now, although I like some luxury pieces and am proud I was finally able to build looks that represent my personal style… It also includes items that aren’t considered ‘luxury’ but instead are quality and varied across the fashion spectrum which permit me to create true looks that speak to how I see fashion, electric, fresh and flexible with who I am. But fashion should be individual… And hopefully not exclusively luxury. That’s not fun. 😊 Thanks for the POV! Appreciate your content.
When I referenced the ‘pants’ or ‘handbag’ I was more so referring to fashion and outfits more broadly. For me, fashion does not give me the tools to communicate anything about myself at anything more than the surface. I’m just off the idea of trying to read into people having them read into me. There is so much more to all of us than our clothing can possibly convey, so there’s no reason to let it go that deep
So relatable! I’ll be honest, it’s hard to make weekly videos when your collection is complete. I even have professional knowledge to lean on and it’s still hard!
I agree 100% about buying because of utility and taste. It's not as deep as some people make it out to be. Now I do realize that everyone is different when it comes to reasons why they buy what they do....some may do it for status but I think the majority of people buy what they buy because they love the item. I definitely didn't buy for the status....I just liked the design and look of the item. Also I only own 2 luxury bags now so what status....I don't have anything close to a collection at this point. The rest of my bags are contemporary branded ones like Tory Burch and Longchamp and also a couple of non branded bags from places like Francesca. I do think it is normal for people to fall out of love with their stuff and part with it. And if people are selling items because they need the money, it is absolutely fine because I have done it myself to pay for medical bills. I also want to say that I am less interested in watching luxury videos these days and I will watch other content from you. The few lux youtubers I still watch are because I like them as a person and not so much for the lux content if that makes sense. Thank you Katherine for another thought provoking video. Off topic...your hair looks beautiful today.
Dang. This video just proves that somehow along the way, I checked out of the luxury community b/c I had no idea this or any discussion was going on. Love that for me!
Omg I’m glad for you! I’ve been away but lurking from the sidelines- and unfortunately what I’m seeing is exactly what I’ve been trying to warn everyone about for all these years.
Loved your comments about “quiet luxury.” I’ve always dressed more classic and it felt annoying that it was being labeled that way. I don’t dress for trends, I dress how I like!
It’s so good to see you on TH-cam again! You brought up so many good points especially the shopping for or being able to pass on things to future generations I haven’t see anyone go into that much detail with that point ❤
Congrats on your new place! Like you point out, everyone has their reasons and have their personal relationship with their finances and material goods. Those relationships might include some icky status/class issues. But that’s on them. For me, the idea that I would look to TH-cam fashion influencers (you included as much as I like you!) for spiritual guidance or advice is bizarre which I think that particular TH-cam influencer was pushing/suggesting. I think this particular influencer is rebranding and that’s about all there is to it.
!!!!!! You get it! Like I said I do admire their vulnerability- I would literally never get that personal online- but I’ve seen it more than most, these attitudes absolutely exist and sharing that feeling online terrifies me!!!
I came across your video today. I love it. My story is I was very good at not spending on anything more than Cerave and sports cloths from TJ max. Including PJ that ich sometimes coz of the low quality. But recently, I just achieved my goals and wanna treat myself like just to feel more exclusive. I don’t know how to explain. Lol. It’s the same thing that I upgraded my seat on the plane. I think my age and my achievements at work right now come to the point that I deserve it now. Oh! I came from a place of ladies in my hometown are little sad so they have to entertain themselves by gossiping, talking trash at how rich their husbands are and getting flashy loud lux items. This made me look at loud luxury so wrong( I’m so sorry) I know pple cringe about quiet lux but I might hype it just now. I want to feel the quality & I don’t want them to ask me how much money I make ( if I want them to ask me , I would rather stick to those girls from my old community. I work from home so no status to show off in person. ( but the social media, hmm maybe. lol). Talking about the need of buying something because we like it so much, girl! I only like a vanguard style but TJ max stop me from spending. Hahahahaha! Imagine I had got some and I have to sell them. 😅would be hard
Everyone's journey starts and leads somewhere! I think it's just important to just buy what makes you happy. Some days I like quiet, other days I like a logo. It just depends on my mood for the day
“Continuing to shop with intention becomes harder”. Exactly. That’s where I am. I’m like ehh I prob need maybe 1 more bag? A white one I’m eyeing. But it feels very complete. Otherwise they kinda start competing with each other and I don’t like that lol. Im not selling but I don’t want to add either
Yes! I don't like redundancy either. Last year with my taupe Chanel bag, it was so similar to my cool little vintage Gucci, and it made me realize that the Gucci was enough for...also that I didn't really like Chanel that much. I actually did by a bag a few weeks ago and I can't wait to share it! But since last July I've only bought 3 bags and I ended up selling one of them anyway - my collection very well might be complete
My mom loves to buy diamond jewelry. Her excuse is she wants to leave a piece to each daughter/daughter-in-law. When she bought the ring that looks like Princess Diana’s, she said she did it for me to inherit! I told her to take it back then bc I don’t want it. It’s not my taste and I won’t wear it. And I can tell you none of my 3 daughters will wear it either. Don’t use me as an excuse to buy something. If you want it, then buy it for yourself.
Such a great example! I had a person in my life that would do that as well. Eventually people end up getting offended that you don't 100% share in their taste.
@@KWSHOPS yah. She was trying to justify the purchase of something she really couldn’t afford by putting it on me. And if she leaves it to me, I’ll sell it. Bc my girls won’t wear it either.
Ooooookkkkkkk. I just went and watched THE VIDEO. I fully support anyone who has any kind of life awakening. It happens to all of us. It can be fitness, diet, religion, consumerism, relationships, whatever. But that video was so condescending and judgmental. I’m more of a Tory Burch girl, though I do have a couple of luxury bags, so I’m not really her target demographic. But I saw it as offensive. It was her tone, and the music. She sounded like she was eulogizing at a funeral. A funeral of…her “unenlightened self”. She could have shared the same message in a more positive, upbeat tone about what she has learned about herself rather than trying to shame everyone else into digging their own materialistic selves a grave. “Join me in my journey is self-flagellation and hair shirts!” My FAVORITE part was when she asked people to subscribe for more judgmental condescension and shame. I barely made it through that video. I only got 1.5 minutes through the click bait second video.
Trust me, I have come in contact with so many "clones" like the version of herself that she was talking about. Some of these people are absolutely insufferable and use these bags as validation from the army of other 'clones'. She referred to certain people as "sheep" and I hate to say it....some people are. And I'd be willing to bet - that she has specific people in mind when saying those things.
We can’t control how people feel, but no one is superior to me- and vice versa. I wish happiness and health to all, and I hope they find something else that fulfills them 🙂
Girl thank you!!! People are making this waaay deeper than it is. One of the greatest parts of living is seeing things you like and buying them
One of my great pleasures in life is being indulgent 😋
Constantly shopping for new bags or designer items allows viewers to live vicariously through these luxury influencers. The problem is that doing so creates great financial stress for the creator. ugh, the 'old money' discourse- *cringe* 🤢
Well said.
So true and accurate but unfortunately soon won’t see it that way but I’m glad you peep game with the hypocrisy
Exactly this. Like just wear what you want and call it a day lmao
OMG. I constantly shop for the imaginary me. She is fabulous and always put together. The real me😆...not so much!
I love imaginary me too! I just can’t afford her 😭

Glad to see you back Kat!!! 💞
Thanks so much for watching 💕💕
This is by far the most insightful video I’ve watched on this topic! Bravo!
That really means a lot to hear! Thanks so much
So good to see you here again! Love this type of content❤
I’m so glad to be back! Thanks so much for watching 💕
So glad to see you and hear your perspective on all this business. Fashion and style can just be a bit of fun when and where you want it.
Thanks so much for watching! That's a super cool idea
Loved your comments about “quiet luxury.” I’ve always dressed more classic and it felt annoying that it was being labeled that way. I don’t dress for trends, I dress how I like!
I know! That is so annoying - why on earth should I want to “look expensive” I’m not for sale!
@@KWSHOPS YES! 👏
I can agree with the children aspect. I got a teenager girl and she doesnt like any of my bags really...
You never know, that could change! But until that's the case just keep shopping for you and bond with her over something else
It’s so good to see you on TH-cam again! You brought up so many good points especially the shopping for or being able to pass on things to future generations I haven’t see anyone go into that much detail with that point ❤
OMG It's a whole mess. And it was something I had to deal with REGULARLY at my jobs. I'm going to try to talk about in the future
And also, you are very correct. Absolutely do not come to me for spiritual (or financial!) guidance 😂
This made me look at loud luxury so wrong( I’m so sorry)
I know pple cringe about quiet lux but I might hype it just now.
Kudos to those selling for their sanity
Absolutely! There is nothing abnormal about phases in life changing or ending - my next video will be delve into that more deeply, stay tuned!
Hi Katherine happy to see you back❗️There has been so many changes going on in this world so I am not surprised. Are you still with Consigntime?
Hi! Thanks so much - yes there are so many things going on in the world that it puts things into perspective.
And no, I’m no longer with Consign of the Times!
Heyyy ! So happy to see your post !
Thanks!! 😊😊 glad to be back
I thought you were leading into a Better Help sponsorship.
😂😂
Anyone else have no idea what creator she’s talking about?
You sound like Jade Warshaw (Dave Ramsey personally)!
I’m not familiar, but I’ll be sure to look her up!
“Join me in my journey is self-flagellation and hair shirts!”
My FAVORITE part was when she asked people to subscribe for more judgmental condescension and shame.
I have 3 daughters and not one of them has my same taste.
they seek PRESTIGE, so now the countersignal is to NOT own those things, they imagine they're superior to us plebs by selling, it's so silly
We can’t control how people feel, but no one is superior to me- and vice versa. I wish happiness and health to all, and I hope they find something else that fulfills them 🙂
Welcome back
Thanks so much!!
@@KWSHOPS your welcome
Hourding. No one needs 20 bags etc.
lol I have 22 🫠 but you’re right, I don’t “need” them. I just like them, something that brings me a bit of happiness
I have a bag collection but not "luxury" but quality material. I've had most of them over twenty years.
Welcome back
Thanks so much! Glad to be back💕
If you need a logo or brand then you don’t have true style
Get to the efn point! Too much irrelevant talk!
I’m naturally long winded, I guess. If you prefer shorter videos I suggest TikTok or IG. You won’t find me there 🙂
This video was a complete waste of my time!
Was the time it took to type out this comment well spent?
@@KWSHOPS🤣🤣🤣🤣 Perfect response.
Well said. PERIOD.
