  • This video explains why seniors in high school need a resume. Hint: it’s not just for college applications, but that is part of it. This video also explains the different components of a resume, including mistakes to avoid and tips for what to do if your resume is too long. Don’t forget to work with your guidance counselor; he or she might have a template you can use or he/she might be able to give you feedback on your resume before you submit your applications or request letters of recommendation.

    Rising seniors, if you have time this summer, I would recommend making a rough draft of your resume. It will be one less thing you'll have to do when you return to school in the fall.

      Do you have informal work experience (I.e mowing lawns or babysitting?) If not, don’t include that category on your resume and focus on the other categories.

    Thank you for this helpful video! I have a question about the employment part. Do I put the name of the place I worked at including the address, or simply just what I worked as, ex: Customer service- Grade 11 or Panda Express- Grade 11

    • @CoachHallWrites

      It might help to put the city and state. It depends on where you live and what you're using the resume for.

    Hey, great video.
    I have a question though
    what is the point of the resume, when we already list everything out in the activities section? Is it just because it's more concise?

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! If you make a resume first, it is easier to complete the activities section. Plus, if asking a teacher for a letter of recommendation, it helps to give them a resume so they can be more specific about your accomplishments outside of class. Also, you can use it for some scholarship applications or job applications.

    how far back should a collage resume go?,,,,,,can I include activities from before 9th grade

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, typically it’s 9-12. Don’t include anything prior to that.

  • @nicholasgabbour1196
    @nicholasgabbour1196 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Where would we include a class we took outside of school? For example I took an accounting class at a community college and im also taking a real estate class at the college.

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could list it under courses and skills. If you are getting college credit for these classes, see if the colleges you are applying to will accept these classes as transfer credits.

      Coach Hall Writes how do I figure out if they do lol?

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the websites of the colleges you are applying to. There should be a place where they mention transfer credits. If not, you can contact the college or an admissions counselor to see if they accept it.

    If I include it on my activities list, should I include it again on my resume?

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's all part of the same application, then it's okay not to put it twice, especially if you need the space on your resume for something else that isn't in your activities. You can also create multiple versions of your resume if needed. Some students will have a refined one and a more detailed one.

    If a college is not providing admission based on resume skills, can we skip the skills in resume?

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you feel you want to emphasize other parts of the resume or feel the skills wouldn’t be impressive, you can omit that part for a college application.

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most people try to keep the resume to one page, but if asked for a curriculum vitae, that can be multiple pages.

    I noticed that College Essay Guy says not to use first person on my resume, but I don't know how not to. Is it okay if I use it a little throughout my resume or does it look too unprofessional and informal? (I feel like if I don't use "I," it seems like I'm not really doing anything and am just watching from the sidelines... I'm not sure if that makes sense.)

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you mean something like “Organized meetings” instead of “I organized meetings.” If so, it’s okay to have bullet points to briefly describe something on your resume. The “I” is implied, so focus on a strong verb.

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're graduating undergrad, definitely emphasize your work experience, internships, etc. and use strong verbs to highlight your leadership and/or involvement.

    I thought a resume was the same as a CV.

    • @CoachHallWrites
      @CoachHallWrites  ปีที่แล้ว

      A resume is usually one page. A CV is usually multiple pages. But, yes, they are similar.
