Absolutely. I’ve seen her in other random things, I think she’s just amazing. She was in a series called “The Gates” playing a vampire in the suburbs. I really like the series, was sorry to see it end.
This is honestly one of the best prequels ever made. Not only does it expand upon the lore of this franchise, it actually makes the characters of Lucian and Viktor even better than they were in the first movie. Viktor is a cruel tyrant, but also wants to bring about order and stability among the vampires and mortals through politics rather than conquest. Lucian is a slave but genuinely has no ill will towards his masters, he almost thinks of himself as a soldier, and if things had turned out differently I think he would’ve served them faithfully for all time, and instead becomes a revolutionary would would follow into the gates of hell itself. But the one who steals the spotlight every time she’s on screen is Sonya played by Rhona Mitra, and just like Selene she’s a warrior princess who prefers to get things done herself. Not to mention Rhona is one of the most gorgeous women that has ever lived, you can see why she was the model for Lara Croft for over a decade!

Sitting in the theater with only a few other people, and some dude comes up to me and ask, “are you here by yourself?” He’s with a group of all guys, and that’s when I realize I’m the only female in the audience. Not sure why he’s asking. I just say, “Yeah, I just loved the first two.” his response “that’s fucking awesome.”
Fun continuity fact: In the flashback to Sonja’s death in the first movie, she was originally portrayed by a blonde actress. Once Rhona Mitra was cast in the role, her death scene from this movie was digitally inserted into the flashback scene on all subsequent re-releases of the first movie. I had no idea they did that until I watched you guys’ reaction and Rhona Mitra was in that scene instead of the original actress.
Tbh I thought they just gave Kate a extensions or something for that scene. Maybe it’s just how that scene was edited and how I didn’t know who played the character lol
Same, I watched the first one on VHS a lot when I was younger and was surprised as an adult to see they thought that far ahead. Turns out they just did some George Lucas stuff, but far less egregious.
And that’s the basis for the entire war/series. The “mutt” inside Sonia as it were. Viktor couldn’t stand the “abomination” of a mixed breed because of his hate for the werewolves/lycans thus the plot in the first film is Lucian and the lycans trying to create the hybrid, essentially all to spite viktor over the murder of Sonia based on the mixed child. Then Lucian dies but “his work is done” because of Michael
This one made me really appreciate Tanus and especially Kraven. As we can see from the beginning the making of Lycans into slaves and never ending war was Viiktor's baby... Even members on the council were over it. I wish we could have seen Kraven in this film being the son of the councilor who proposed priveledged Lycans, or maybe having a crush on Sonia or receiving a kindness from Lucian... that was only thing missing imo
Kraven only made a pact with Lucian all those centuries ago because he wanted to be in charge. He wanted the Lycans to kill Viktor, Amelia, and Marcus and then in the power vacuum, he could make himself the new supreme Elder of the Vampire Clan. I can almost guarantee that once he became ruler, Kraven would have killed Lucian and the rest of the Lycans swiftly since he already would have everything that he wanted except for Selene as his bride. But he didn't account for Viktor being awakened, so it threw everything that he had planned for centuries out the window and in the moment when he should have had Lucians back, he shot him in it instead. Tanis is less ambitious than Kraven but no more deceptive and traitorous such as playing sides when it favors himself the most, as shown in Evolution when he was supplying Lycans with ultraviolet ammunition to kill the Vampire Death Dealers. Sure, he didn't want to rise all the way through the ranks to become an Elder like Kraven wanted nor would he have the balls to try to conspire to kill all three Elders, but he still wanted to be in favor of those who were more likely to be the winning side.
Yeah, it's a shame this movie doesn't at least show a bit of Kraven, though his story seems like a material for second part of the prequel, I mean the whole deal of him and a group of vampire warriors going into Lucian's fortress only Kraven surviving and making a deal: "Of the scores of brave souls who entered Lucian's fortress, a single Vampire survived: Kraven, who was richly rewarded for not only setting the great blaze, but for returning with evidence of the Lycan Master's demise: The branded skin, cut from Lucian's very arm." This seems like an obvious follow up to the events of this movie...though there is a small continuity error, Lucian in this movie doesn't have this brand with v letter on his arm :).
A dark tale of Romeo and Juliet story with the backdrop of Lycans and Vampires. It was great to see Michael Sheen getting the spotlight with Rhona Mitra playing the love interest.
First off, I am SO here for all of the Love, Actually references lol. AND John's revelation when Roxy reminded him what happens to Sonja (props to Roxy, I'm soooooo glad you did that, girl). It's the brilliance of the prequel: you know what's coming, you just don't know how or when it's gonna happen. Thanks for reviewing (what I'll say is) the best film of the series! (And agreed, DEFINITELY the sexiest Michael Sheen of all Michael Sheens.)
As a fan of Werewolves this movie is my favorite in the series. The casting for this series has been excellent. Actor Bill Nighy is perfect as Viktor, as is Michael Sheen as Lucian, they both steal every scene they're in. Rhona Mitra was also an excellent casting choice. She looks and sounds so much like Kate Beckinsale that you could believe that Viktor saw his daughter in Selene. Definitely a huge improvement in the Lycans and Werewolves designs and special effects. In fact, they're better than most other Werewolf movies I've seen in the last several years.
It's interesting to think about what kind of world we would have gotten if Victor had put his prejudice aside and inspired loyalty through love and respect instead of fear. He could have united the clans under Sonya and Lucien, his grandchild would have likely been the most powerful being of the time, and his kingdom could have risen to unparalleled heights.
@@houseofaction On the contrary, the child would have been very powerful. Vampires that are BORN vampires are the most powerful kind and it would have had direct Lycan blood too, not "changed" blood. We know from Michael what happens when both bloods mix correctly, he was just as strong as William, and Michael was not even mixed naturally. Oh and Alexander Corvinus was not powerful . Both of his sons were far stronger than him. His only actual power was immortality and that his blood could create mutations in others. In terms of physical strength and speed etc. he is just a human and no more. To be specific, he was born with a unique blood condition that causes mutations in himself and others. He survived a massive plague but in order to do so his blood had to make him immortal as a response to contracting the disease. When he had his 3 sons they all received his blood condition, Marcus bitten by a bat changed into a Vampire, William being bitten by a wolf became the first Lycan and the third (unnamed) son lived a mortal life because his condition was dormant. The mortal son passed that dormant condition all the way down to Michael, and by extension all the way down to Eve who we know is the most powerful descendant of the Corvinus line to ever live and has MANY unique powers and abilities. It is Eve's existence which lets us know how powerful Sonia and Luciens child would have been as that child would have the same bloodline mix as Eve. Victor almost certainly knew this and that is the real reason he killed the child.

Also the perfect blend of vampire and lycan.

Rhona Mitra was one of the first live action models for the Laura Croft games, and that's what I'll always remember her from. She definitely should have had a bigger career IMO and now I think she devotes most of her time to saving animals or something.

I am loving all the lusting over Michael Sheen in this movie! Lucian is one of my favorite characters Michael has played, and I'm glad he's getting the love he deserves for this movie. I love this movie, and am still furious Lucian wasn't able to team up with Selene to kill Viktor in the first movie. After seeing his whole journey in the prequel, it feels so wrong to have given his character such a weak death in the first movie.
This one was a surprise to all of us Underworld fans! Didn't know what to expect when they first made this movie but it's one of my favorites in the series. The first showing of Sonya was a different actress at first but after ROTL i noticed some versions of the first film have been changed to Rhona. The next one is the most successful, though I don't think the last 2 were as strong as the first 3 they still are a must watch for Kate. Also, looking back I didn't realize that you never see any female lycans. I hope you guys consider doing the Resident Evil franchise after this because they were released around the same time and I remember going back and forth between franchises! Such a great time in my life ❤

It's the same necklace Viktor gave to Selene, Kraven took it as part of the proof he'd 'killed' Lucien, this was already explained in the previous films.

If Viktor hadn't stopped his daughter, Sonya, and her Lycan lover, Lucian, he would've been an unproud, unready, reluctant grandfather to a supposed first ever hybrid, who he'd STILL consider an abomination. But, lo and behold, 6 centuries later, he's found himself up against Michael Corvin, who of course was reborn a hybrid(bitten by Lucian first, who in turn asks Selene to do it as well)!!!!!😤

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but about the time this came out, they had the previous Underworld movies on Netflix, and to tie this one in with the viewers, they edited in Rhona Mitra's death scene to the first Underworld, essentially replacing the unknown actress who briefly appeared as Sonya in the original death scene.
This is easily my favorite of the franchise. Kinda makes you wish they'd have done ANOTHER prequel where the Lycans go into hiding and Lucian makes the pact with Kraven was it ? Because at that point... the Vampires think the Lycans are extinct i believe ?
Fun facts: Michael Sheen is Kate Beckinsale babydaddy ( daughters father). Director of undersworld Len Wiseman is Kate Beckinsale' husband ( 2004-2019).
i can't believe this smoking hot character Lucian is played by the same actor who played Aziraphale in Good Omens. Granted he's younger here but he's so jolly-looking as Aziraphale, i can't imagine he'd have the features to play a brooding hottie of a werewolf even as a younger actor but here he is. also, what range he has to play such vastly different characters.
They say this is the best one of the franchise. But it was definitely review bombed which is why you havent seen martin sheen in these roles. At the time these movies are looked at as trash because vampires etc but theres some real Shakespearean elements in these movies that i appreciate.
I swear, a video game set in the medieval era of Underworld would be perfect as another prequel. Imagine a crusader kings like game where you play as the vampire elders (Amelia, Marcus, and Viktor), first trying to capture William, then lead up to when Lucien was born, a lot of details between those 2 major events, hell eventually ending it with when Craven made his deal with Lucien at that (believed to be) final battle.
This one is my fave!! Yes to all things Michael Sheen ❤ love him in this role and just about any other. Great love scene on the cliff whew and I always cry for Lucians loss but it helps explain some of his actions later. Loved the Love Actually singing. I love this movie because I love werewolves/Lycans and we get a win for the werewolf fans here because most of the time the vampires win. Not to say I hate vampires but I’m definitely more werewolf fan.

I love how biting to read blood memories is a social taboo in this film saga. It's like the ultimate invasion of privacy. Nobody wants it done to them, so they generally avoid it.
In the original cut of Underworld, Sonia was played by a blonde actress in the flashback scene. After Rise of the Lycans, they replaced that flashback with Rhona Mitra’s death scene, which was the version you all watched. 👍

This one was a surprise to all of us Underworld fans! Didn't know what to expect when they first made this movie but it's one of my favorites in the series. The first showing of Sonya was a different actress at first but after ROTL i noticed some versions of the first film have been changed to Rhona. The next one is the most successful, though I don't think the last 2 were as strong as the first 3 they still are a must watch for Kate.
Also, looking back I didn't realize that you never see any female lycans.
I hope you guys consider doing the Resident Evil franchise after this because they were released around the same time and I remember going back and forth between franchises! Such a great time in my life ❤

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but about the time this came out, they had the previous Underworld movies on Netflix, and to tie this one in with the viewers, they edited in Rhona Mitra's death scene to the first Underworld, essentially replacing the unknown actress who briefly appeared as Sonya in the original death scene.
I watched the prequel first before watching the rest of the movies. It was awesome!

This is easily my favorite of the franchise. Kinda makes you wish they'd have done ANOTHER prequel where the Lycans go into hiding and Lucian makes the pact with Kraven was it ? Because at that point... the Vampires think the Lycans are extinct i believe ?

i can't believe this smoking hot character Lucian is played by the same actor who played Aziraphale in Good Omens. Granted he's younger here but he's so jolly-looking as Aziraphale, i can't imagine he'd have the features to play a brooding hottie of a werewolf even as a younger actor but here he is. also, what range he has to play such vastly different characters.

They say this is the best one of the franchise. But it was definitely review bombed which is why you havent seen martin sheen in these roles. At the time these movies are looked at as trash because vampires etc but theres some real Shakespearean elements in these movies that i appreciate.
This is an excellent prequel, one of the few examples of a prequel that manages to do real honour to the original movie and loads of fun

I swear, a video game set in the medieval era of Underworld would be perfect as another prequel.
Imagine a crusader kings like game where you play as the vampire elders (Amelia, Marcus, and Viktor), first trying to capture William, then lead up to when Lucien was born, a lot of details between those 2 major events, hell eventually ending it with when Craven made his deal with Lucien at that (believed to be) final battle.
It's a wonder they never made a video game considering how successful these movies were

This one is my fave!! Yes to all things Michael Sheen ❤ love him in this role and just about any other. Great love scene on the cliff whew and I always cry for Lucians loss but it helps explain some of his actions later. Loved the Love Actually singing. I love this movie because I love werewolves/Lycans and we get a win for the werewolf fans here because most of the time the vampires win. Not to say I hate vampires but I’m definitely more werewolf fan.

I love how biting to read blood memories is a social taboo in this film saga. It's like the ultimate invasion of privacy. Nobody wants it done to them, so they generally avoid it.

In the original cut of Underworld, Sonia was played by a blonde actress in the flashback scene. After Rise of the Lycans, they replaced that flashback with Rhona Mitra’s death scene, which was the version you all watched. 👍
Considering this is a fan service prequel that's just to flesh out the lore of underworld, it's a lot better than it has any right to be.
