This is a great video. I'm about to buy a TJ with surface rust all through the frame and will be using this and another video to help guide me through. The rest of the TJ is so mint, I can't pass it up! 04 5 spd 78k miles. Thanks for the vid!
Nice job very informative ! nice to see that a hard job turn into a manageable one !! just bought a tj and the person did the por15 and didn't do it right so i'am thinking of doing it again soon !!! thanks again bud !
would love an update. thinking about doing this on my xj before it gets bad. i wanted to do the underside a lighter color, maybe grey. was thinking the lighter color would make things easier to see. with the black everything kinda just blends together. i want different parts to stick out better. i could do some kind of color coding like red for gas line, orange for brakes, ect.
Great video. Thanks for all the information. How is the por 15 paint job holding up? Would you do anything different? I'm going to por 15 my 2006 tundra in the spring
Thanks for the reply! How about factory, unpainted, zinc plated sheet metal surfaces, like those on the INSIDE of the car, wheel house fender lip? I run my finger along, it’s a bit rough due to road dirt grinding on it (rear fender underside), but it’s not terribly rusty and obviously not painted
you all probably dont care at all but does any of you know a tool to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Eric Joziah I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
It has held up incredibly well but honestly, I haven't don't done any winter driving with it so I would have been pretty displeased if I had anything bad to say at this point. The Jeeps been stored in the garage 90% of the time and kept clean due to some drivetrain issues I ran into. Should have a video up next week to show the update on it.
Really because its only a few dollars to put a spray can topcoat over it. Por15 mentions a few times to use a topcoat so it must be important. Areas like between my body and gas tank I likely didn't need to topcoat but it only took a few minutes.
Awesome video man! Where are you from? I'm willing to go to you to get mine done lol I don't think any shop will do what you've done to perfect the process. Are you from ny by any chance?
I'm actually up in New Brunswick, Canada. The process is time consuming and I was lucky to have the time and reason to have the suspension and gas tank all dropped for another project. The only time I have seen shops do this same process would be on project cars where the tub is actually fully removed. It would have been so much easier if the tub was on its side or upside down.
Jeeping.Net Your right about that brother, well thanks for your reply , can't wait for your yearly update, see how that rust protector holds up for you.
I will be doing the internal frame this coming summer. Ideally, I would have done it before the outside of the frame but I was on a time crunch and the suspension was all being removed this fall so it made more sense to do the outside of the frame now. I'll be using Eastwood internal frame paint.
Totally agree, I didn't film it but I also cleaned out the frame for a few weeks every day with a degreaser, ran a magnet up and down inside and put a few cans of Eastwood inner frame coater. Now twice a year I clean out the frame/decrease, let it dry then put in a few cans of fluid film. I also added two drain holes by the control arm mounts to help with the flushing.
Yeah, I'm really sorry about that the truth is there isn't much to update. It still looks mint but the Jeep has only had maybe 100 miles put on it. A few weeks after this video the rear gears blew up and then once I got them fixed the transmission mount failed and blew up a few things.
I used tremclad spray paint but this was a mistake since it isn’t UV resistant either. I’m going to go back and top coat with either a UV clear coat or another UV spray paint. I’m not really concerned about however since the underside never really gets much direct UV
Does this stuff breathe? I've seen horror stories of condensation forming between the frame and coating and your chassis ends up rotting itself exponentially.
With Por15 that really shouldn't be a concern since it bonds directly to the metal but I've certainly seen what you mention with certain bedliners and powder coatings. I never recommend people using bedliners on their frames for that reason.
@@maartentett9726 I was thinking of the same thing about using epoxy primer. Will it have trouble bonding if the rust is not 100% removed? I would see the issue might be that you can never perfectly remove all the rust before applying. Do you need anything on top of the primer?
pancracio lopez most people get the best results when brushing on por15 plus its highly toxic when in the air and I don’t own a fresh air ventilation system.
This video is the most revealing of all: you actually painted POR onto PAINTED metal?! The frame uses black that’s fine, but the underbody body panel has factory base coat paint (NOT bare metal), and POR15 works ?
It did and in my tests I’ve found the following to be true. Painting over dirt rust don’t last and the same goes for glossy paint. But using a red scratch pad then a heavy degrease will work really well over paint. Bare metal I’ve gotten bad results do it’s best to rough it up as well. Best results without a doubt is going over surface rust with a good cleaning and degreasing but leaving the rust in place. Most the time on this project was spent roughing up the paint.

Thanks!! Hence they emphasize on using Metal Prep. I wonder what'd happen if POR over the two bad surfaces: dirt rust/glossy paint. The POR will just chip off or trap moisture until it's rusted underneath and the POR hides them?
Five year update? Thinking about doing this on my Jeep Wrangler this summer. Any regrets painting with POR15?
Looking forward to your one year update video....
@Santana Yousef don't

Any updates on the durability of the coating? Looking to do the underbody of my truck in the near future and consider using por15

I really want to go this on my 4Runner but living in an apartment building right now means I cant which sucks. This stuff looks amazing though!
I d love to see you assemble the jeep !
great video, lots of information/details without being too long, thanks for this!
Just a question why would you need the 2nd coat . No UV is getting at the under body of your car.

Sorry just got the update video posted. It held up really well other than when it rubbed on some rocks it took off chunks.
update video would be sweet. keep up the good work!!
Would you recommend skipping the POR-15 degreaser and using the WD40 one?
That is my feeling, I didn't find the Por15 Degreaser anything special. I really like this WD40 degreaser I use it all the time now on everything.
Great video thank you so much !
Did you release the December 2018 video yet?
looks really good
How much would a body shop charge to do this work on a 4th gen 4Runner undercarriage?
Link to air hammer attachments?
How did it hold up

@Deacon Shane you are welcome :)
great info brother,
Nice video man!
guarantee you name brand oven cleaner (easy off) will out preform all those cleaners. excellent degreaser.
Bought some to apply to my ford e350 van, wonder how this has held up?!

So if the underside really does not really get exposed to UV why the top coat ?

:-) So how has it been holding up so far? I plan to use it on the underside of my 92 Stealth TT, after I get my gas tank reconditioned
What is the air chisel attachment called? Have a link? Thanks
SG Tool Aid 91125 Smoothing Hammer Air Chisel - I bought it off Amazon.ca its around $25 CDN

Wish we could see how she looks now! (currently July 2019)
04/2020 now....................
Waiting for the follow up video
Posted!
Do you think a gallon of por 15 semi gloss black will be sufficient for 2 coats and also one gallon of the top coat?
32 fl. oz did 2 coats on the underbody and frame. This stuff goes a long long way.

Thanks for the feedback appreciate it!
Update?
Did you do the inside of the frame?

As a xbody man these Jeeps the frames rust from the inside out the por-15 on the outside isn't going to help

Love it when there isn't a follow up as promised :(

@@JeepingNet oh dang that stinks man... You got it fixed up yet?
This is why overlanders dont use Jeep though... Too problematic...
UPDATE???
what did you top coat it with ?

It really sucks Chrysler can’t coat these frames and bodies with something that can stand up to the rust from the factory.
Agree the JKs certainly appear to be holding up better than the TJ/YJs ever did.
How much would this be to have a shop do it?? Considering buying a wrangler
Camryn Murphy do it yourself

Por 15 is the worst thing you could put on a frame. I have 36 years experience in restoration. Use high quality epoxy primer instead
@@maartentett9726 I was thinking of the same thing about using epoxy primer. Will it have trouble bonding if the rust is not 100% removed? I would see the issue might be that you can never perfectly remove all the rust before applying. Do you need anything on top of the primer?
Why did you not do by spraying
