I could swear back in the 80s, in the box of little car toys my grandparents had when my brother and I came over were two similar looking G1 Bumblebee toys. We could tell them apart and each had a favourite to play with. Maybe my grandparents actually had gotten us one of these super rare figures without knowing oh so long ago.

The Blue Bumblejumper "Sedan" was my first Transformer. Before everything, before the comics and the cartoon, this was the toy that sparked it all for me. Also if they do make new toys of him I'd like to see him in blue as a reference to his Brazilian version, we don't need another scrappy little bright yellow guy IMO
One thing I've learned over the years is that the early days of Transformers was a chaotic time. Things were moving and developing so fast that mistakes were inevitable. Buster or Spike Witwicky? How about Butch Witwicky? Bumblebee being released in red and Cliffjumper being released in yellow. The toy catalog that had Bluestreak in blue creating the urban legend of the rare "Blue" Bluestreak that even made it into price guides. So a random toy never meant for US release getting packaged accidentally on Cliffjumper cards makes perfect sense to me. I never had Bumper/nor do I think I ever saw him as a kid. I first learned of Bumblejumper from one of the many G1 toy guides that were published in the early 2000s.
Interestingly enough, Red Bumblebee, and Yellow Cliffjumper weren't mistakes. It was revealed that they released those versions of the toys in order to make the line seem bigger.
even the toys’ tech specs had quite a few mistakes! im not sure if you already know, but the original Sideswipe and Sunstreaker tech specs were accidentally swapped somehow; for example Sunstreaker’s Specs say that he has Sideswipe’s rocket launcher, and Sideswipe has his brother’s pile-drivers. also, the numbers for the Seekers’ specs were all swapped around (Starscream got Thundercracker’s stats, Thundercracker got Skywarp’s, and Skywarp has Starscream’s).

What's probably being referred to here is the fact that, throughout 1984 and 1985, the Cliffjumper and Bumblebee toys were both available in red AND yellow. They weren't advertised that way, but the toys were intentionally produced in two colours each, as way to "make the line look bigger," Hasbro's George Dunsay said. "Yellow Cliffjumper" is a separate thing to Bumper - but the most convincing argument I reckon I've heard for Bumper's existence is that the Mazda mould was accidentally swapped in for a run of what were meant to be yellow Cliffs.

Obsure indeed, I only found out about Bumper's existence a few weeks back when another youtuber commented on how similar the core class Buzzworthy Bumblebee's alt mode is to Bumper.
I got this little guy as my first Transformer toy when the Transformers first started getting popular. The kids at school accused me of having a Transformers knock-off instead of a real Transformer. But I liked the little guy. He was cool.

What many people don't know is that Bumper actually has a cameo in Transformers: The Movie in the scene where Daniel saves Spike and the others from being dropped in the acid vat. Where we see another yellow Autobot behind Cliffjumper and many are saying it's Hubcap but if you look at the robot mode very closely, it's actually Bumper.
Bumble Jumper..... it was an oddity for sure. No one knows why it was a thing and Hasbro kept seeding out these "mistakes" over the years. I remember them rereleasing the Bumble jumpers when they did the classics rerelease through Toys R Us and how baffling it was to see a yellow car in the Cliff jumper packaging.
I also remember Hasbro packaging a Yellow Cliffjumper mold & a Red Bumblebee mold in their respective packages. But guess they didn't make names for them either. That was before they made the Hubcap figure.
I've read many of those books, and still don't remember this character, though it has been quite a few years. I may actually have this figure! I now know to check for the licensing stamp once I search through my box. Thanks for the info, Chris, and for another great video.
Hey Chris. Great vid! I received one of these for Christmas, 1988. I'm from a small town in Newfoundland, Canada. Also, I recall being in the store after and seeing a few more of the same toy on the shelf with the Cliffjumper card, so I called mine "Yellow Cliffjumper"

I feel like that Buzzworthy Bumblebee might suddenly become a little more valuable now that the connection to Bumper has been made. A Generations Selects feels very possible, just needs a different head.
Yeah .....
When i was a kid .
I came across a bunch of the bumper toys .
I did not recognize the Autobot and thought it odd that the packaging depicted a different bot then what was in the package .
If things keep going on this way Bumper could become the Autobot Waspinator.
In the new IDWverse, he definitely shares Wasp's poor luck.
I had Bumper! He was my very first Transformer! Oh wow. I remember I used to pout that it wasn’t Bumblebee when my grandparents got it for me as a travel gift when they were in the States. I was even more confused as to why Cliffjumper on the box. It felt like a knock off.✨🖊✨
Obsure indeed, I only found out about Bumper's existence a few weeks back when another youtuber commented on how similar the core class Buzzworthy Bumblebee's alt mode is to Bumper.
The packing and animation errors of the G1 days definitely had to be tied to rock cocaine.
Owning an original Bumper figure would be the coolest flex in the world.
Bought mine in 2004 for $80 USD.
It's Always Cool When Something Made By The Fans Gets Considered Canon
As The Name Bumper Became The Official Name For Em'
glad to see this little guy get recognition
I got this little guy as my first Transformer toy when the Transformers first started getting popular. The kids at school accused me of having a Transformers knock-off instead of a real Transformer. But I liked the little guy. He was cool.
Yeah bumper is probably my favorite obscure character in all of transformers. I really wish I could get my hands on an original bumper.
I feel like it would have been cool if back in 1984 Bumper’s toy was officially released with a bio in everything in blue, so there were all three Diaclone colors in the Transformers toyline, making a trio like the Datsun boys.
Chris mcfeely you IS BEST!!
This channel is getting better all the time.
“You cannot ignore me forever, optimus prime” - Bumper
"You too can have a pop up book of Megatron ruthlessly kerb-stomping Bumper to death." Christ! I'll bet that was a surprise for those kids that wanted a transformers book for Xmas. Lol!
I mean, it's not. Because Bumper didn't "exist." It's just a generic robot.
Word to word to the channel don't forget to update this video on bumper
Bumble Jumper..... it was an oddity for sure. No one knows why it was a thing and Hasbro kept seeding out these "mistakes" over the years. I remember them rereleasing the Bumble jumpers when they did the classics rerelease through Toys R Us and how baffling it was to see a yellow car in the Cliff jumper packaging.
I wish they'd kept his blue coloring so he'd stand out from Bumblebee, Cliffjumper and Hubcap a bit more.
Me everytime I find out about an obscure TF character: YEARS OF ACADEMY TRAINING WASTED!
Man this was an unexpected basics on Bumblejumper/Bumper and that’s pretty cool that he is in the transformers world
I also remember Hasbro packaging a Yellow Cliffjumper mold & a Red Bumblebee mold in their respective packages.
So glad you did this! It would be so cool if you did a basics on all the bumblebee/cliff repaints!
Never had nor can recall seeing this on shelves. Definitely did see the red Bumblebee and that was confusing enough.
Oh, I Love Obscure Character Month! Whose next? The Omnibots? Powerdashers? Skids? Venom? Can't wait for next week
Love your vids I'm not a huge Transformers fan but ur vids are fun to watch
Whoa... I got this as a present many years ago and I thought it was Bumblebee at first! I had no idea he was rare and had such a backstory! :o
Hey Chris. Great vid! I received one of these for Christmas, 1988. I'm from a small town in Newfoundland, Canada. It was purchased from a bargain store we have here called Riffs who would often sell clearance loads of stuff from major retailers. I remember being upset because "Bumblebee's feet were wrong!" Also, I recall being in the store after and seeing a few more of the same toy on the shelf with the Cliffjumper card, so I called mine "Yellow Cliffjumper"
