I remember going to Comic-con back in 2000 and seeing all the japanese Beast Wars II and Neo Toys wondering who they were and even thought Lio Convoy was Optimus Primal's Brother since they all looked like Optimus Prime. I also remember someone having a TV set up and playing the fansubbed Beast Wars II anime on VHS. it wouldn't be years later until I spotted Lio Convoy's toy at a local comic shop that I begged my dad if he could get it for me because I liked it so much.
Read Beast Wars the Gathering/The Ascending by Simon Furman. They star the non-show toy characters and include the Japanese Beast Wars characters. There's also the Transformers Universe material, that gives a starring role to Optimus Primal. Rather recently there's Beast Wars the Uprising, a super dark Beast Wars series starring Lio Convoy and reimagining plenty of classic Maximals and Predacons from both sides of the pond.
I only got into Beast Wars this year and it's always great to learn about the impact it's had, and the Japanese side is something I've been really keen on learning about, so this is really well timed :)

It's a common enough thing that I'd certainly point it out when he gets his own episode! You watch this comments section, I bet I get one or two saying I'm pronouncing it wrong! 😉
Very informative! I really like Lio Convoy's design, and I appreciate the fact that even though the continuity of these shows is kinda "meh", they took the time to try and tie it in with other Transformers media. Apparently, in the Japanese dub, Tigatron and Airazor had a sort of "Samurai and Ward" relationship, but when their romance REALLY began to show, the producers actually explained to the fans that they were in love. It's kind of cool and funny seeing as how many Transformers romances today (particularly in the comics) are often gay or asexual. The best part about it is that its treated as something completely normal among Transformers, and everyone is just ok with it (at least, that's how I saw it).
I remember owning the combiner team that Lio Junior belonged to (don’t remember the other members’ names) as a kid. Didn’t know until many years later that they came from these shows.
The combiner team you're thinking of is Magnaboss (ironically, they didn't change the name of the team, even though they changed the individual character's names). And it was actually released in Hasbro markets first, THEN it went to Japan, where they repurposed it for the show.
Oh I read the 'shut up' as playful like saying 'get out of town' or something. I will say this - the older you are the more relaxed you get about it. It's much harder to cope with while you're still relatively young. Like, when you realize you're older than the average check-out operator, that comes as a shock, even if you really ain't that old just then.

Wow 😯. There are so many aspects to this subject that can have there own “the basics”. I am glad to finally have some questions answered on this eclectic part of transformer history.
Beasts Wars Neo was an amazing show that encourages the values of faith, friendship and family, a cartoon that showed how the greatest heroe can come from the must humblest place, and how the strenght of a family can stand anything
Beast Wars II has always been my jam. Beast Wars Neo as well, but I still have a LOT to catch up with there. Good thing we've got The Basics to help us out on that. :)
I'm still sad & disappointed we never got these series to the states ( especially since the animators were behind Gundams/ Gow Gaigar at the time) but maybe in time, that'll change! ❤
Both Beast Wars, Beast Wars Second and Neo aired in South Korea when I was like 5. So like how 70s or 80s grew up with G1, these were MY Transformers. Along with RID(2001) which also aired in South Korea.
I have such ridiculously fond memories of going to the sunday markets when I was a kid with my family. There was this one stall that imported all the Japanese beast era transformers, and as this was mid/late 90s they cost absolutely fuck all, so my folks always bought me one every weekend (as long as I behaved of course. . . ). Was so awesome having these way different and awesomely complicated transformers none of my mates had. Plus I don't really care for vehicular transformers, so all of a sudden having access to like 4× as many as toys r us had was damn nigh orgasmic. . .
I really enjoyed these shows. Saw the first 4 episodes of BWII at Botcon 98, and had bootleg VHS for years until the fansubs came out. But I'd definitely support any physical media release of II and Neo in North America. The movie in particular is pretty awesome
One other Japanese Beast Wars character did get a homage in the American toys. There is a version of the Armada steam shovel retooled and repainted for Cybertron in homage to Longrack (the giraffe in Neo) including a new headsculpt resembling his. It actually works pretty well, since the extendable shovel-arm punch in robot mode is similar to the extending claw arm the original Longrack had as a gimmick.
Don’t forget that Longrack actually has gotten a “new” figure since BWII - specifically as a repaint of Armada Hoist in Transformers Cybertron. He even had an appearance in the anime.
I remember loving the intros and outros to the Japanese Beast Wars, and Beast Wars Metals when I was a kid, and I still do! And it's through the Japanese Beast Wars I found two of my favorite Transformers robots. Beast Wars 2 Dirge and Powerpinch!
I really enjoyed this video as I actually have two figures from the Japanese Beast Wars line (Stampy from BWN and Apache from BW2) so it was cool to see it explained more on where they actually came from.
Honestly there's something hilarious about the thought that every Transformers series since has basically had nothing but gag dubs for the last 20 years. It would be an interesting look at the shows though, especially something as grim as Beast Machines
I like the idea that the unused characters from the toyline were adopted by the Japanese series, and that it was supposed to be in the same continuity but at a different period in time. Suppose it was kind of like a shared universe a bit like the mcu or arrowverse

I love the Japanese Beast Wars series, I especially love that the same characters appeared in the IDW BW comic. It's hard to believe that the Cybertron they rebuilt got trashed by Megs when he fell off the Ark shuttle though ;(
What remarkable timing. I was just conversing with an artist on Twitter, telling her about the connections between The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, the original dub of Dragon Ball Z, and Beast Wars/Machines via the voice casts. I had just started explaining how Beast Wars was handled in Japan, I can share this with her. More information in less time.
Yeah, I have that version. Never got the original giraffe. I should have grabbed him when he was more available back in the day and I was collecting the other BWN figures.
I have the Cybertron figure because I thought it looked cool. Finding out it was an homage to a BWII character surprised me. Finding out he had a similar personality as General Armstrong surprised me even more. "This technique has been passed down the Lockrack line for GENERATIONS!"
I have the OG Longrack, and it's definitely a bizarre piece. Pushing on the giraffe's tongue makes the eyes roll back, for some reason I still can't quite discern. I'd love to get Stampy or Break for the dumb weapon mode hookups.
I recently binged neo all the way through and loved it, have encore big convoy and trying to collect the main predacon crew. It is a shame so many tf series are turned into jokes overseas, I wonder what Japanese fans think of our more serious versions?
At least Megastorm got a generation selects figure, but as the original G2 Megatron. all they would need to do, is released that figure under the Megastorm name.
love the JPN exclusive series that tie into the g1 cartoon. Good memories of when I was a kid and when I got to share the toys and the cartoon with my kids .

I also remember someone having a TV set up and playing the fansubbed Beast Wars II anime on VHS.
it wouldn't be years later until I spotted Lio Convoy's toy at a local comic shop that I begged my dad if he could get it for me because I liked it so much.
Yeah, honestly, something about Lio's design I like way more than Primal's.
i got A mini lio convoy toy
I hope Hasbro and Takara can give us a bunch of modern updates of these characters, Japan has always had such a great imagination.
@@jeanettewu2537 I own it , it’s great!
The legacy line will have lio convoy this year
As a matter of fact…
I only got into Beast Wars this year and it's always great to learn about the impact it's had, and the Japanese side is something I've been really keen on learning about, so this is really well timed :)
Beast Wars Neo has some of my favorite BW toys, so cool.
Definitely pick up the Beast Wars graphic novels, you'll be very happy.
Awesome overview as always Chris, and thank you for the link in the description to our channel!
Thanks for highlighting these little known classics!
The cel-animated alt-mode of Lio Convoy gave me flashbacks to the father of Kimba The White Lion.
I have seen all of this shows, they are not for everyone, they have tone which is aimed for kids, but I liked them Specially Lio Convoy, Big Convoy, Heinard, Starscream (Who should´ve been called Skywarp) and Gigastorm. I liked Lio Convoy the most, but I must say I liked Beast Wars Neo much more than Beastwars II.
These videos have quickly become part of my Saturday morning ritual.
What I love most is the fact that Tokehito Koyasu who voices Dio from Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure, Paradox from Yu-Gi-Oh and Sartorius in Gx and Ozymandias, Hans Andersen and Mephistopheles from Fate/ Grand Order voices Optimus Primal in the japanese
That moment when you realise you've been mispronouncing Lio Convoy as Leo Convoy for twenty years
It's a common enough thing that I'd certainly point it out when he gets his own episode! You watch this comments section, I bet I get one or two saying I'm pronouncing it wrong! 😉
Well, it's pronounced either way. It's like how most people pronounces a dinosaur's name sometimes, there is no true proper way to say it.
Well, I personally prefer pronouncing it as Lio Convoy myself anyway. ^.^
So you combined Lio Convoy and Leo Prime.
I never understood that, really. It's spelled like lion, not leon, so shouldn't it be pronounced the same way?
25 years the Beast Era is the same age as me.
I feel so old now.😭
Imagine how old it feels to be told Beast Era is 25 and to still think of it as 'that new stuff'. ;)
@@originaluddite shut up. I first watched the Beast Wars when I was elementary school so it’s old to me.
All my education was behind me when it started.
@@originaluddite yep I felt old while in high school when I heard elementary school students full on swear
I never watched the japanese beast wars, but I love their unique designs! Really hope they appear in western media of a significant kind!
Our channel hosts both series that we fansubbed. th-cam.com/play/PL3lb98kB-PsHqreVIGQ6xZRwa2T0UzPT4.html There's also torrents available of these and other Transformers media that we've subtitled over the years via nyaa.si/?f=0&c=0_0&q=karyuudo
Man, Long Rack is still just such a wild trip to see treated as a like, toy that exists
Get My Future (BWII) is literally one of the hypest TF OPs, next to Transformers Evo and the Victory Theme
Dude, I love your pfp
DUDE! i cant tell how happy it made me seeing this thumbnail on my feed,
I just finished Beast wars 2 Neo and...GOSH it's such a good series, i love it very much and i kinda wish it was aired in more places. i think the comedy&action ratio are just perfect to catch kids and adults alike
I'm not very well versed with the beast era so I really learnt a lot from this video. Excellent as always!
Well, that's just prime.
Eh, we're all gonna die.
@@DevinGates yesssssssssssss
11:29 HE MENTIONED KISS PLAYERS! We're one step closer to a full episode on it. It is inevitable.
He hesitated giving it a honorable mention.
WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT KISS PLAYERS IN THIS HOUSE OF PRIMUS!!
And an episode even gave the audience a warning about stranger danger
@@恩陶梁Exactly, a great show
Beast Wars II has always been my jam. Beast Wars Neo as well, but I still have a LOT to catch up with there. Good thing we've got The Basics to help us out on that. :)
I hope these shows get a remaster. I would love to see the 2D animation in awesome quality.
Especially the 90s beast wars show
i wanna see a basics on "best machines" or one on "transformers VS Marvel's Avengers" one day!
One of my favourite days was when I realized the Beast Machines theme song was a real full-length song, Phat Planet.
I like how Big Convoy has his own Nemesis Counterpart in one of the comics, and that they resembled the Alters from Fate/ Grand Order
WAR WAR STOP IT
and
GET MY FUTURE
and
Love For Ever
That's what this episode is about.
Kinda crazy to think that a decade after g1 we got the beasts
I came back to say Legacy United Magmatron and Big Convoy are coming!!!!
I'm still sad & disappointed we never got these series to the states ( especially since the animators were behind Gundams/ Gow Gaigar at the time) but maybe in time, that'll change! ❤
I can’t explain why but Neo is one of my favourite TF toylines.
Both Beast Wars, Beast Wars Second and Neo aired in South Korea when I was like 5. So like how 70s or 80s grew up with G1, these were MY Transformers. Along with RID(2001) which also aired in South Korea.
Well that's cool
I'm making my way through the Japanese G1 timeline now. Still on Masterforce.
Femboy Air razor is something I didn’t know I needed until now
I've always been fascinated by the Japanese beast series but I still don't understand why the 'bots needed beast modes but the 'cons didn't.
Hi Chris McFeely, What is your favourite Transformers Series in the Franchise?
2nd and Neo were great, we need more figs of characters from it.
I remember loving the intros and outros to the Japanese Beast Wars, and Beast Wars Metals when I was a kid, and I still do! And it's through the Japanese Beast Wars I found two of my favorite Transformers robots. Beast Wars 2 Dirge and Powerpinch!
Beast Wars Second is now available on DVD.
I really enjoyed this video as I actually have two figures from the Japanese Beast Wars line (Stampy from BWN and Apache from BW2) so it was cool to see it explained more on where they actually came from.
They HAVE to release these in an updated japanese collection
Anybody still remember how good the openings of beast wars II and neo sounded like?
can you translate them into English
Honestly there's something hilarious about the thought that every Transformers series since has basically had nothing but gag dubs for the last 20 years. It would be an interesting look at the shows though, especially something as grim as Beast Machines
A topic I know little about! Thank you!
I like the idea that the unused characters from the toyline were adopted by the Japanese series, and that it was supposed to be in the same continuity but at a different period in time. Suppose it was kind of like a shared universe a bit like the mcu or arrowverse
The day we get an official CHUG Leo Prime is the day I can finally die in peace
So that's where Lio Prime came from, I came across a pre order for a model and was curious. Really like his design.
I have quite the soft spot for Japanese Beast Wars! It deserves official english releases!
This is the best basics video you have ever done.
I recently download and watch the first episode of BW the second and now I'm more excited to watch the show and neo if I can find neo
They got all the BW Neo episodes here on TH-cam for free lol
Those are some wild plotlines
I don’t know if you forgot him or just chose not to mention him, but longrack got a new figure or at least an homage in tf cybertron.
12:48 This aged like milk... And I'm happy for that!
Who would've thought we would be getting a brand new Lio Convoy, Tasmanian Kid and Magmatron in Hasbro mainline.
I'm a g1 guy but I'm watching this since I can learn something and wanna support you chris. Gave it a like too
I recently binged neo all the way through and loved it, have encore big convoy and trying to collect the main predacon crew.
It is a shame so many tf series are turned into jokes overseas, I wonder what Japanese fans think of our more serious versions?
I owe my mist viewed video to this video. Thanks for letting me use the clips Chris!!
3:05 and that's were the Blue big Convoy comic fix the Continuity error.
Love Beast Wars. And this is an amazing video for my Monday. Thank you 😁👍
At least Megastorm got a generation selects figure, but as the original G2 Megatron. all they would need to do, is released that figure under the Megastorm name.
love the JPN exclusive series that tie into the g1 cartoon. Good memories of when I was a kid and when I got to share the toys and the cartoon with my kids .
Well thank primus for kyuudo fansubs for making beast wars 2 and neo and some of the other Japanese transformers material possible to view
Thanks man hoping this will come out after that Copy Convoy video
7:36 I’m not the only one who finds it funny that Dinobot is using a gun, let alone one that looks like a sniper rifle shotgun.
I always like Cohrada though he's a maximal. I would love to have his action figure.
"25 years ago, Hasbro introduce..... " Scratch disk..Suddenly feel old and nostalgic
I've been waiting for a proper dub for so long. It's almost criminal they haven't done anything with it.
Thank you for this! I was always confused by the Japanese beast era storylines/ continuity.
I remember most of the Transmetels toys breaking really easy.
R.I.P Transmetel Megatrons upper Torso.
Good lord Megatron's giant eyeball ship is absolutely terrifying?
I wished both of Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo episodes are all in english dubbed on TH-cam or released onto Complete DVD collection just like the CGI original Beast Wars Series 1996.
My favorites are still Longrack, Diver, and Randy.❤😃
Probably made the right choice not bringing Beast Machines.... I found it to be thoroughly disappointing given how good Beast Wars was
I love Beast wars 2, it’s my favorite series and besides I love every anime of transformers that you mentioned including the beast wars neo 🦭🧡💙❤️💚💞💕💜💝🤎🥰💖💖💜💜💜🥰
