Pool Time with Baby Elephant Phabeni and Adine!

- In South Africa, the end of the year means pool parties! There’s no better way to cool down when it gets hot, and that’s true for elephant calves as well 😉
On this particularly hot day, Phabeni and Adine spend some time next to the orphanage pool. A pool party needs snacks, and this one has some tasty bark (although Adine may disagree).
We hope everyone is enjoying the last bit of 2023! ☀️

Today little Phabeni looks happy and obviously loved the interaction and TLC with Adine So sweet to see how Adine is showing Phabeni the ropes and helped him to cool down with water on his entire body and to eat the bark Little by little he is coming out of his shell The joint efforts between his dedicated Carers and Adine seem to be bearing fruit ❤🐘

Incredible bond! He wraps his little trunk around Adine in response to her touch! He feels right at home in her close and personal space! Adine has broken thru the barrier as I suspect some of the carers have! In such a short amount of time the "Trust" has formed...despite this sweet baby bulls fiestiness and strong headedness....he knows he is loved! It is all uphill from now! The trust directed between this human mom to this baby elephant is so encouraging to see, and that some “man” can be trusted not to harm these lovely, and beautiful big creatures made by our loving Creator. So precious and priceless to see. Adine you and your helpers do such a great job with these spectacular animals. Thank you does not say enough for all the work you do there. Adine is a very good ellie mom and Phabeni appears happy with her at the pool today. I know many of us would love to be in her place, but it takes great dedication and hard work to do this every day after the novelty wears off. It also takes courage to face the inevitable suffering and death of animals you love and try to help. Thank you Adine and all the staff at HERD and to all that help by sharing videos and donating.

Ellie babies respond to touching. He clearly trusts and loves Aldine. They are such beautiful creatures. I can’t untoward anyone could harm them. Same for rhinos.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect they also flap their ears, like dogs do their tails - to show part of their emotions - to show anger and happiness, and other emotions. Just like a dog does by wagging their tail, holding it up or tucking it down between their legs - and emotional weather vane.
The ears are typically used only for thermal regulation. They can be used to communicate emotions but that’s only for threat displays. When an elephant feels threatened, they will stand the ears out and raise their heads to look bigger to a potential threat. In the rare case that doesn’t work, the ears are folded back and the head is lowered before an actual charge.
Emotions are typically displayed by other body language eg walking backwards towards another elephant can show an attempt to be friendly or to appear submissive, head butting to show playfulness, feistiness, wanting to be left alone or angry. Trunks and trunk gestures can be used in a wide variety of ways to show emotions too. Mothers and allomothers are constantly touching babies to show love and care, elephants will often touch each other all through the day (their love language is touch, as the video says). Trunks can be put in other elephant’s mouths, trunks can be intertwined, babies will sometimes hold on to the tail of the mother with their trunk as they walk, much like human children will hold a parent's hand. Emotions are also, of course, displayed by vocalization.
An excellent free resource to learn about this is the Elephant Ethogram (ethography is the study of behavior) website that compiles many different elephant behaviors based on decades of observations of African Savannah (ie like the HERD eles) elephants. happy reading!

In the mid-1970s when I was a teenager I volunteered at the Portland Zoological Research Center (now the Oregon Zoo) and one of my projects was to develop elephant-related questions and answers for an interactive game that zoo visitors could play at the elephant exhibit. How I wish such things would have been available back then! There were only one or two decent books on elephants at the library at the time!
