Exploring The Remains Of Herculaneum Dock Volatile Cargo Stores (Casemates) - Liverpool -

- Herculaneum Dock was part of the Port of Liverpool in Liverpool, England. It was at the south end of the Liverpool dock system, on the River Mersey. To the north it was connected to Harrington Dock. The dock was named after the Herculaneum Pottery Company that had previously occupied the site.
From 1767, a tidal basin in the area that would become the dock was used for unloading copper for a smelting works.Between 1794 and 1841 it was the site of a pottery. In 1864, a new dock designed by George Fosbery Lyster was blasted from the foreshore, providing two graving docks. This dock opened in 1866.Ten years later, a third graving dock was added.
Beginning in 1873, the dock handled petroleum. In 1878, specialist casemates were built to store this and other volatile cargo within the sandstone cliffs above. The dock continued in this capacity until the task of oil handling was transferred across the river to Tranmere Oil Terminal and Stanlow Oil Refinery. During 1881 the dock facility was enlarged further and a fourth graving dock was constructed in 1902.
Liverpool remained an important port during the Second World War, with Herculaneum Dock acting as a terminus for the North Atlantic Convoys.
Herculaneum Dock was formerly served by its own station on the Liverpool Overhead Railway. The station (and railway) closed on 30 December 1956. By 1958 demolition of the station had been completed.
In 1972, Herculaneum Dock closed being filled in during the 1980s to create a car park.
The area south of the dock contained a tank farm this was reclaimed for the Liverpool Garden Festival and residential properties.
In 2004, the site was bought by national property developer David McLean Homes and a riverside residential development, called City Quay, Liverpool was built on the dock.
Since the closing of Herculaneum Dock, what was the main dock area is now a car park and where the graving docks were are now office buildings. The map of 1901 shows the entrance to the dock with the letter 'L'. A restaurant has since been built on this.
all casemates were chiseled by hand and must have took ages as there was no drilling tools back in the day.

a nice little wander around here and a nice place to live was visiting a friend so decided to take a look at the former casemates which are at the back of this complex.

Thanks, i really enjoyed this video. My Dad was from the Dingle and I remember being taken to Grafton Street as a kid (70 now) and standing behind the railings looking into the dock. Wow, it seemed so high, thinking now was probably the first time I realised I wasn't keen on heights. He told me a story of a horse drawn fire engine going out of control down one of the streets and through the fence into the Dock. Not sure how true it was but he wasn't in the habit of lying. It may have just been a local fable.
Thanks for this video which brought back many memories for me. 68 years ago, I used to walk along Grafton street on the way to my school (Matthew Arnold). The views then through those railings where of ships being unloaded. Most of the other docks nearby were hidden behind high walls, so this was a great place to see the dock activities and all sorts of goods being brought from around the world. I wasn't aware then that beneath my feet then there were those casemates in your video built into the sandstone cliff or of the history of those docks being so key for fuel imports.
Thanks for this George, I used to walk/drive past on the bottom and always wondered about it. If those storage sheds were in London or another city they would be restored and be small shops, or single person accommodation or small cafes. Really trendy little places, at the least storage or garages for the apartment owners. I hope they are not left to rot and another piece of Liverpool Heritage destroyed. The plants were Giant oriental Poppies. Usually Huge Red Papery Flowers with black faces. The leaves look like prickle leaves, or that’s what my Dad thought when he dug my poppies up and destroyed them after I’d taken years to grow them 😢

It makes me sad when I think about the thousands upon thousands of Irish people who managed to get away from the Great Famine and suffered so much , I can imagine families living hand to mouth in those damp cold caves . This Anglo Irish grandma still thinks about how my own grandparents quietly telling me about those times . I'm 73ish now and glad to have the chance to record those memories for the future generations .🍀🙃
Worked on the garden festival,for a company called diggers,we used to use the casements for storage.

That brought back some memories. As Kids, we used to play all along there in the late 60s and 70s. I grew up in Caryl Gardens. We used to have some real adventures all along there and The Cast Iron Shore, making swings out of old Ropes and such like. Happy Happy Days 😊

When you were going along the Dockers stepswalk Can you imagine the noise of the dockers Hob Nail boots on the cobbles...wow,,,it must have been the local alarm clock!!

I remember in the 1960s watching the activities in the dock from Cockburn St. above as Dad had stopped the car. A chap was moving small goods waggons with a rope attached to a motorised capstan. The casements would be difficult to repurpose as sandstone is porous so will always be wet. The residents have the place to themselves so is very quiet and wouldn't want them opened up to access by the general public.
Really enjoyed your film George, brought back loads of memories from the 50's, we lived in the Beloe St tennies, and used to walk up to look out over the docks and all the ships coming in an out.

That swing gate at around 24.30 was removed for a while as my son was injured by it when he was little. He hurt his head but it didn’t knock any sense into him 😂 great video x

i worked on the tunnel from sefton dock to garston we build a massive holding and settlment works underground bz the pub on ottispool prom. there is a 4 ft pipe goes up to aigburth vale to stop the fooding

I used to go to school in the Dingle. I remember going down the steps and those lock ups. I didn't realise that it was a sandstone cliff before, makes sense though.
The Dingle over head train station would be good to visit, its a garage now but you can still get down to it bottom of Park Road.

I have been im the williamson tunnels a few years back along with the part they are currently digging out only ever got photos though as i wasn't on youtube at the time

There's a video on old Georges dock (Liverpool One - Old Dock Tours) that says all of Liverpool is built on Sandstone if I remember rightly?

It seems a shame that there is so much space that's lying empty. I'm pretty sure there's potential to create some really unique spaces.
Them casemates would make good workshops if they are not too damp.
Not sure they stored petrol there to be sent to Stanlow as they refined oil at Stanlow to make petrol.

I remember the Iron Bridge. I think it used to be an access to the old Brunswick Railway Depot but not 100% certain.

The garden festival is currently getting all flattened for houses i do plan to go the gardens and film that as i havent been for ages always nice to drop in

Years ago mate the last time was about 2012 before the collapse I'd love to go bk in and film it
@@g2emedia1977 I videoed it about 20 years ago, went right to the very end of the tunnel and you can look out into Herc docks area, lots of old cars and rope in that tunnel and is also haunted, the guy who owned the garage was fantastic let us go wherever we wanted, sadly lost the video, don't know who owns the garage now though if even if its still there?
The garage is now long gone mate the shutters are down and locked i have seen some recent pictures from inside all electric still on etc and a huge repair where it collapsed
