    Remember going to Gatwick airport for a holiday at the age of 13. I think we were going to Romania. I do remember waiting at the gate to board near the Windows when Concorde came to a stop at a nearby gate so that it's nose was facing the window where I stood, and then the nose moved. I don't remember much of the holiday clearly but I do recall thinking that that plane was one of the most beautiful things i had ever seen.

    I really do miss seeing this fly over. It blew my mind when I was a kid and I couldn’t understand why it had to go back then. Obviously money and that once accident but still…
    It’s really kinda sad seeing such a magnificent bird as a museum piece.

      As a young lad of 13 got to witness a Concorde takeoff from London close up, we just happened to be at the oversized luggage depot which is right alongside one of the runways. I ran up to the fence just in time to see her bank slightly to the right with engines roaring. She was very quick.

    Back in the day, my colleagues were building the M11 motorway up to Cambridge.
    At the time Concorde had not yet arrived at Duxford. The other large aircraft were already there, I guess.
    My colleagues had instructions to hold on the (what is now) M11 going past Duxford because the clear approach, available length of runway, safety zones had to be maintained for Concorde's arrival.
    Concorde flew in and as soon as it had come to a stop the “machines” moved-in to build the M11.

    I thought this was video was about "noise lowering!" LOL!
    I experienced Concorde in two ways:
    1/ I watched as one did touch and goes at Prestwick. It was incredibly noisy! Even for its time. I was never closer than a mile or so from it. Still it was "I need ear protection here!" loud.
    2/ I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. For years, we South Shore residents heard rather mysterious booms. Not loud, not obnoxious by any means, but certainly noticeable. It was quite some time before the general public got an explanation for these curious "thumps." It was Concorde inbound to New York City.

    I remember the visor lowering a lot smoother then this.. and in demonstrations prior to this one. It lowered smoothly and slowly throughout the range. This time it has a nasty drop and hard stop at the beginning before slowly lowering. Hydraulics getting worn out from repeated demonstrations plus lack of maintenance?

Then he would comment that these are going to be served to the passengers on the Concorde. He's going to JFK straight from the store. Said he worked for the catering company that supplied the meals to the Concorde.

      There is a B-727 on display in the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry that can still raise and lower its landing gear and move its flight controls. The interesting thing is that all the hydraulic systems have been modified so they work on compressed air instead of hydraulic fluid. This was done to prevent leaks from dripping fluid onto the floor of the museum. Perhaps this Concorde has been modified the same way.

    I'm presuming that it operated faster when it was new? Obviously only one set of wipers are needed.
    I'm guessing it's operated by two switches (minimal/safeties), one for the screen and another for the nose with them placed at the engineering station (3rd seat)?

    • @arcadia449
      @arcadia449  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting thought?

    • @TairnKA
      @TairnKA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Watching its operation with the delay between the screen and nose moving down gave me that impression.
      Having it as one series of articulations requires several adjustments to prevent misalignment and jamming (ref: 57 Ford Skyliner).
      I'm sure there must be safeties for both to prevent them form moving at speed.

    • @dezzadiggler3693
      @dezzadiggler3693 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I also agree. The TSR-2 was way ahead of anything at the time. Again, the spineless government we had, didn't want to upset America or other countries who might have been 'slighted' by our advanced designs in aircraft engineering; and chose to scrap them all. They even wanted to pull the plug on Concorde until they realised it would cost millions to cancel!

      are you kidding?...that thing was a horrible mess.

    • @occamsrayzor
      @occamsrayzor 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it wasn't, it was a ground-breaking aircraft design that would have had no match in the skies if the project hadn't been shafted by Harold Wilson's government - the government that allowed itself to be harassed by the U.S's bully boy tactics . The cancellation of the TSR2, the scrapping of the remaining airframes, and the criminal destruction of all the tooling that built it, sounded the death-knell of the British aircraft industry. It was a betrayal of the entire nation.

      @@arcadia449 Bullshit. Without it a birdstrike would "blind" at least half the "pilots" and could take our both "windscreens. The British Concordes were not compliant with FAA/EASA regulations for cockpit "glass" and the nose was a drag-adding clusterfuck attempt to "reduce drag" by adding surface area. It also "droops" to make the aircraft "fit" existing jetways/parking spots because the idiots tried to "save weight" by reducing "cabin doors" and ended up moving the "front" and "main" door so far back that the nose would hit the terminal building before the aircraft was close enough for the jetway. You can't see a damned thing with that shit "dropped" and the pilots' asses still in their seats you can't see with the them up. And who in the fuck flies or taxis looking "straight down" in front of the plane. The "droop snoot" also prevent tuga from "pushing back" on the NLG which is flimsy, lightweight shit on the British Concordes.

    • @jordanrodrigues8265
      @jordanrodrigues8265 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fixed-wing aircraft use a much slower speed for takeoff and landing than they do for cruising. At slower speed the nose needs to be held higher. Concorde's supersonic delta wings needed a *lot* of angle (almost 15 degrees) to land at a reasonably slow speed. Actually, it wasn't exactly "reasonable" - the typical landing speed of 160 knots or more is faster than the "never exceed" speed of many small commercial aircraft.
      So it wasn't possible to see ahead while approaching a runway or descending at low speed. This is really bad in civilian aviation because "look where you're going" is a safety rule which pilots are expected to follow. Military aviation has different procedures for landing and often use different equipment - both on the aircraft and the ground - but to some extent supersonic military aircraft just live with the risks.

      Better approach runway at landing. As the plane is so angled upward and the nose is so long, pilots couldn't see the runway without lowering the nose.
      And the visor you see going down inside the nose at the beginning is a heat shield. At Mach 2 (the Concorde's cruising speed), air resistance was so strong that its front windows needed a heat shield to not overheat.
