Don't Throw Away Your Gateron Browns... Turn them into CREAMERONS! Tutorial and Typing on KBD D65

  • Hey Guys! Welcome back to the channel!
    There comes a point in a custom keyboard aficionado's life, when you graduate from the stock Gateron Browns that came with your first mechanical keyboard. But what to do with a perfectly working sample of Gateron Browns? These almost linear-tactiles - "Lacktiles" are not that great out of the gate, but they do posses a lower housing that happens to work great when paired with another switch... the NK Cream Linears.
    The result is an interestingly clacky linear switch, that is smoother than a NK Cream, but with its own distinct feel and sound. They produce a sound that is almost like shaking a rattle can of spray paint, or even a tiny little crab walking across the table.
    Hope this tutorial helps you understand the process of creating one of these, and if you enjoy the sound, you too can save a batch of Gateron Browns (or almost any Gateron Switch for that matter) from their untimely demise!
    Hope you enjoy the video!

    I changed my gateron brown optical switches to linears by removing the leaf that adds tactility, they're basically reds now but a touch heavier which is perfect for me I was wanting a linear inbetween reds and blacks (i know they do yellows but the yellow gat opticals are 35g not 50g) with optical they linears don't have a leaf so I saved myself buying a lot of 70 lol.

    Does the scratchiness of the NK creams go away. How does the smoothness compare to other switches like tangerines or lubed gat yellows?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nabil! I have been told that to make NK creams truly smooth, you have to use them unlubed for some time to really break them in, then lube them. Apparently the process takes a few weeks, and I never had the patience to do it :) I feel the Creams are similar or slightly worse than gateron yellows and there is absolutely no comparison against the tangerine. Tangerines are one of the smoothest switches out there right now :)

    does cherry bottom work as well?

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi kurisu! The cherry bottom housing will work, but the sound signature will vary. I believe the Cherry black housings have a nice deep sound signature, so will not sound exactly the same as the gateron housing. Only challenge will be finding a smooth cherry bottom housing, because some tend to be a bit scratchy. Hope that helps!

    Any thoughts on what housing could create a similar sound profile but with less stem wobble?

  • @thisjustanother
    @thisjustanother 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    so was it the change of springs and film that changed how it acts and sounds? or the housing? cause all it seemed changed was the spring and film, nothing about the actual key.

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi thisjustanother! The biggest change comes from using the gateron lower housing with the cream stem. The gat lower housing is smoother than the cream lower housing and also has a different sound profile as well. Hope that helps!

    They sound good-a little higher pitched than I'd like. I think I actually prefer the sound of the creams as-is-but then, as much as I like the sound, I just type faster on a tactile switch. Honestly if I haven't got anyone else to annoy, I kind of like a clicky switch like a tuned Kailh BOX Pink … but no amount of tuning seems to keep those things from ghosting after about six months. Disappointed.
