  • We've already reviewed the D-MAX SX with Isuzu's familiar 3.0L turbo diesel motor. Now, the D-MAX is available with a smaller, more affordable and more fuel efficient 1.9L engine. Cameron finds out whether it's a solid engine choice, or the engine to avoid when buying your next ute.

Bought one three weeks ago. Travelled 5,500 kms so far including towing a 2 ton U Haul trailer from Qld to Victoria. It’s just brilliant. Unbelievable fuel economy and performance. I have the manual and the transmission is smooth and well geared. I came out of a 2021BT50 with the Isuzu 3 litre engine and this new 1.9 performs just as well. Leaves the HiLux for dead. Highly recommend this ute. And the best thing is the one touch button to turn off the lane keep assist.

To be honest, wasn't expecting the 1.9L to perform as good as this. Looks like it's quickly becoming the new engine of choice.

You have U Haul down under as well?

Didn't realise you could get the 1.9 in Aus also. Any reason why you would go for the 1.9 over the 3.0? MPG?

@@rossdrayton5476 thanks, it just seems a bit small to be doing heavy work. Unsure how it's rated at 3.5 tonnes when the likes of L200 are only 3.1 with a bigger engine. Only 1.9 option in my country and it's hard to go for a 1.9 over others with much more displacement for similar price.

damn shame the 1.9L wasn't a thing when i ordered my 2021 dmax.. would have gone for that rather than the 3L. the 3L like you said is a bit overkill and can struggle with traction when the boost kicks in. oh well.. might trade in one day

Yeah the 1.9L dials the torque down to a more suitable level for the lighter utes. Definitely worth comparing to your ute when the trade in time comes.

It's not a steel tray it's an aluminum tray and it's made in Australia by Triple M Truck Bodies.

would you have problems putting a bullbar and bigger tyres on the 1.9L ? like would it kill the car ?

Absolutely it will, these go great empty and thats where it ends. After 14,000ks on my 1.9 SX I've ordered a 3lt SX Dmax, the 1.9lt is only a city commuter, once its out on the hwy it struggles.

So basically the same power as the older ldv t60 with what I assume is much better quality and refinement for slightly more cost.

Haven't had a go in an LDV yet, but from what I've heard that might be true.

As someone who has a stock 4x4 2021 lsm, the smart cruise control is pitiful, speed can go above/below the set limit by up to 8kms at times before it decides to hit the brakes and/or accelerate,
Also when coming to a complete stop during cruise (if it doesnt freak out and scream at you to hit the breaks first rather than slowing down - with plenty of time to see the car in front) it disengages the break after 3 seconds from a standstill causing you to roll forward if you dont immediately put your foot on the brakes
i have lost trust in the cruise control (my 2017 santafe keeps within 1 - max 2 km of the set speed for reference and hold brakes from standstill)
IDAS settings have to be set to low/close otherwise every car thats slowed down 10 meters in front of you will cause the car to lock up.
The ute is great for work but Isuzu really need to update the idas system as it doesnt seem responsive/smart enough to put any trust into.
    My 2 cents.

Can understand your grievances. Haven't found this radar to be as refined as something you'd find in a Hyundai/Kia product. Had some interesting moments, but found it to be mostly useful.
