I started walking to a grocery store that is one mile away. It saves on gas, let’s me get in some exercise, and prevents me from buying “extras”. Happy Weekend, Emmy/Paul and family!

Sorry, but this is the first time I disagree with your advise to get rid of clothing you didn't want in the past year. Keep some of those clothes as your spare clothes for when money gets real right and you cannot afford to replace your clothes because of inflation. Use those undesired clothes as your work clothes around the house or garden.

My reboot is going to be to do more for myself before I hire somebody to do things for me. I'm a retired lady in my 70s and have gotten lazy about yard and household tasks and have a handy man and cleaning lady come in occasionally. I feel like I'm depending on them too much which can be costly AND frustrating. I see what happens to others as we age and give up our independence too soon because we won't try to do and think for ourselves! It might take me a little longer for me to do things than it used to and I have to break tasks down into smaller units. I can't mop and clean all my house in one day...but I can make one room shine before I wear out! ☺ 👍

You could add a little toasted sesame oil to get a little bacon flavor. Bacon flavor is what makes baked beans so flavorful.

Emmy and Paul, you have a gorgeous family! All the young adults are so polite, sensible, articulate and beautiful/handsome. Above all they practice frugality. It must be fun to have them around. I love the “living with parents until being kicked out” comment. My 3 young adult children are still living with us, we will not kick them out and they can stay as long as they want. I enjoy your reinvent meal ideas from leftovers. Thanks and more to come please! Since we have the blazing sun here in California, I’m drying my heavy laundry in the yard now.

I usually save the buns, then for an easy dinner, I put either pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce, onions ,chopped pepperoni and what ever else such as cheese, peppers etc. Bake in oven for about 25 min. Pizza burgers! Grandchildren love making theirs "there way"

After a busy few months just staying home is great, and as a plus I am saving on gas. Although I'd like to go away I don't have the money for a vacation so trying to do things at home that are peaceful and relaxing, like watching TH-cam videos. 😃, reading, taking a bubble bath, watching a show or movie with a snack, sitting on my deck, catching up on some home tasks. Fun segment with your family, they all seem lovely.

What a wonderful family! And I must try your baked bean burgers this summer!
My reboot is to eat at home more. We have gotten into a bad habit of grabbing dinner while we are out running errands on Saturdays and I know it's costing us. My idea is to plan a couple of Saturday evenings a month to have friends over for a potluck meal - or even just making dessert or snacks and play some games so we have better things to look forward to instead of frittering our money away on eating out.

What a great video. I loved seeing your family's responses. I am moving to a new home. So we are revising our grocery budget; focusing on eating up odds and ends in the fridge and freezer and only buying produce when needed. I am also not buying any boxes, just using and reusing what we have in hand. Thankfully, the new home is a few miles away, so I can unpack a few totes, and bring them home to reuse over and over again. I can't wait to try that bean burger recipe!

The car & home maintenance is huge! My husband has saved us tens of thousands by doing repairs and renos himself. He was just at our daughter's yesterday to replace a broken belt & a few other things. None of the young people she knows can do anything like it. My husband taught our kids the basics so she can change her oil and tires etc. None of her housemates can even do that. It's crazy.

  • @Babba08
    @Babba08 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Laura is right! Do what you feel comfortable doing on your car instead of paying a mechanic. I don't change my own oil because I wouldn't know how to dispose of the oil, but just last summer the mechanic who does change my oil gives the car a good once over and said I need new air filters. I have a friend who is very handy and asked him if he could do it with my assistance and he said sure. (I convinced him with the promise of a spaghetti dinner complete with salad and bread. :) ) Anyway, we spent an hour working on it and I saved plenty of money I'm sure. Also, my interior rear view mirror decided to fall off the windshield a couple of years ago and I just couldn't imagine paying to someone to put it back on. I went online and bought a kit to do myself and I did. Again, I'm sure I saved quite a bit of money. Brakes I might not do, but little things I certainly will.
Your family is lovely and I'm sure you loved spending that time with them.
I'm going to work on shopping the pantry again this month. I really don't need to buy a lot of stuff to make decent meals. So I'm going to work on that this month.

I just joined a local "no buy" group and will be decluttering and gifting out some items I no longer need or want. Also I am challenging myself to use up perishable goods. Today I used up perishables/ and using best/before date/leftovers items up because there is loss leaders that I can replace them with this weekend (eggs & mushrooms). This is what I made today. A spinach, mushroom, tomato, cheese quiche (6 slices), 6 Ground beef pies, onion, potato, 1/3 can of mushroom soup, and mushrooms (6), and 6 butter tarts). I used 1 &1/2 boxes of pastry dough was close to best before date that I got on clearance for a steal. The cost of the ingredients was @$5 CAD ($3.91 USD for 12 small meal serving and 6 buttertarts. I put some into freezer for lunches. Tomorrow I will be making banana muffins and apple/pineapple squares to use up the rest or perishables. We will have a small grocery haul this week. Have a great weekend!

My frugal tip would be don’t procrastinate and put things off, fix what can be fixed before it gets to the point of unrepair. We were reminiscing about mom’s frugal ways, someone recalled that as our dad’s shirt collars wore out she would remove it, flip it over so the underside was on top and the worn side was on the bottom. I was amazed at that.

My reboot is to recycle unusual things that would normally go in the trash right after emptying. For example potato chip bags. I give them a quick wash and let air dry and use them to store washed produce. I have also put my salad bowl inside to keep the salad fresh when I have made the salad ahead for my meal. I am trying to eliminate the use of plastic wrap so I've been getting creative. I also cut open bread bags and use them to cover things going into the refrigerator. When making homemade bread I reuse the bread bags from bread that I have purchased from the store. It's rather fun to think outside the box when trying not to use plastic wrap.

What a beautiful family! Thank you for sharing great tips from those wonderful young people. My change isn't for the month of June so much as what I plan for the second half of the year starting in July (the new "fiscal year," lol). My husband and I relocated about 18 months ago to a new town, and it has been no end of necessary infrastructure spending on the new home (new solar panels and storage batteries, new HVAC, water heater, appliances, etc.) Then I wanted to deal with decorative issues like paint, furniture, etc. So the reboot I'm planning as we move into July is to slam on the brakes and have the whole second half of this year be a "no-spend on the house" challenge. A house is never finished anyway, right? I want to stop spending on all "improvements" and just enjoy things as they are, with what we already have, which is far more than enough. As your video shows, it's family sharing time together in the home that matters most!

Our local Salvation Army won't accept any more donations. They are crying out for help so we will make a donation of time. And it's the height of gardening season. But several adult grandchildren are spending the summer between college semesters to continue learning how to work the land. They will help out at Salvation Army, too. This is a good reset for our family. Keep the no waste recipes coming! This is so important in today's times and really anytime.
We like to dehydrate leftover baked beans and use them to crumble and sprinkle over mac & cheese, any casserole, and scrambled eggs. I never thought of making them into bean burgers. Great idea! We will try this.

This month I'm only buying whats on sale. I will be eating fresh, lettuce, onions, dill, from my greenhouse. And my fruit will come from the Clarence rack at my local grocery store to cut down on the cost. I also plan on making dandelion biscuits for snack, they are easy and so cheap to make . Fishing is in my near future. That's another great way to have fresh fee food on my plate. I also plan on using what I have in my freezer. And possibly can up some recipes for future meals that require minimal effort to prepare. This way I can open a jar, heat it up and eat. I'm also planing a yard sale. When we bought this house. We bought a shed and garage with it. I have a shed with tons of stuff that hasn't seen the light of day in years. Time to declutter and sell what we don't need. I can go on and on about how I like to save and or make money. Every penny counts,

My reboot is each week when I buy groceries, I am going to set an amount I want to spend, and use a handheld tally counter to keep track of how much each item costs. If it costs $1.30 I round it up to $2. It has a finger ring to put over your finger while holding in your hand. You just press to click it for each dollar that it costs. This way I won't go over the amount I want to spend each week. I've used it twice now and it worked wonderfully!

This upcoming week, my husband’s brother is coming to put in new flooring. While I’m excited, it’s going to be a lot on me because I watch our 6 month old granddaughter everyday. Tonight, we are having jasmine rice, butter chicken that I am not making because I found it on sale in Wegmans, steamed broccoli and chunks of chicken breast. Tomorrow, I am making vegetable soup. The vegetable broth is from vegetable scraps I saved in the freezer. I am feeding this to my husband and his brother for lunch the next few days. Saturday night is leftover turkey from Thanksgiving, stuffing I bought for $.69 a bag at the day-old bread store and gravy. Sunday, shake and bake pork chops, mashed potatoes and cubed butternut squash I found on clearance and froze. I’m making muffins and crustless quiche Sunday for them to have for breakfast Monday. May have chili and cornbread Monday, Tuesday, hard shell tacos, Wednesday, pizza and salad, Thursday, bratwurst and sauerkraut, Friday, fish and French fries. During the height of the 2008 recession, my husband bought me a french fry chopper. I love that thing! Great video today! Love you guys!

I forgot to answer the QOTD:.... This month we implemented a new way of shopping, due to gas prices. We shop 25 miles from home (our small town store isn't so great...). I've decided that we will make the most of our gasoline by going half as often, but buying twice as much when we shop. We'll have produce coming in from the garden soon to help with fresh veggies and my husband can always pick up an odd item that we might need on his way home from work...but the bulk of our shopping will be done less often and in larger quantities.
Another thing we'll be implementing in mid July: We raise our own meat chickens and turkeys. We'll receive the chicks in mid July. Instead of buying feed along as we need it, we'll buy all that we anticipate needing in bulk and get a discount. We'll need to buy some extra storage receptacles (large totes or garbage cans with lids), but we can use them each year for the same purpose. This will allow us a discount on the feed, and it will save us making trips to the feed store. I normally swing in and get it when I go grocery shopping, but since I'll be shopping less, we needed a new plan.

    Beautiful family!!! 😍
I know this is months late, but I wanted to share what I do to save money.
I decided to see what would happen if I limit my grocery spending to $300/month. The way I 'enforce' this to myself is to only use cash, when shopping for groceries. At the beginning of the month, I take out $300 and put it in a specific section in my wallet. This has resulted in me doing meal planning, which I realized, was not hard at all. The first month I technically ran out of money before the end of the month (no, I didn't go hungry). That was actually a good thing, because I had to use what I already had in my house. The next month, I ended up with a surplus. I've been doing this for four months now, and haven't run out of money since. It's actually resulted in me doing more meal planning, which results in much less waste (shooting for zero), and more money for groceries. The next step is to plan what to do with the surplus at the end of each month. I'm looking to use that to add to food storage.
    Thanks for the tips!!!

My husband requires a special medical procedure once a week about an hour and a half each way with the procedure taking 2 and a half hours each time. Yesterday we found the best route to get there, found round trip uses about half a tank of gas, so checked the prices for gas along the way and found some charging a bit less than our home area. I am going to pack a picnic lunch from home each time and put a crockpot meal in my slow cooker before we leave so we won’t have to eat out. I did scout around the areas for small occasional treats to reduce the stress. We drive through Hershey and can stop at a Wawa for a fresh candy bar sometime and our route also takes us past a local outdoor ice cream shop! …Deb Gnagey

You guys and your family are so delightful. Thank you for sharing with us. This month I'm trying very hard to plan meals that don't require much cooking or any at all (sandwiches, meat & cheese chunks, etc). Saves time plus helps utilities. Also want to do better repurposing leftovers. I'm intrigued with the baked bean idea. Will be trying that one. Thanks & God bless.

Wonderful video as always! What a beautiful family you have Emmy and Paul. It's so nice you were all able to get together! You are truly blessed.
My reboot for the summer are a couple of things. I'm going to hang more clothes out on the line to dry. I'm planning on canning more of my veggies this summer. And I'm going to work harder at meal planning so we don't have to get take out when I have busy day at work.

Your family is wonderful! What great tips they all had. What a great idea w/ the baked bean burgers! And I still have yet to do the garlic bread but it’s on my list if I end up having leftover rolls! My reboot of sorts will be finding free and low cost summer activities to do. Like you say, being outdoors more is important as winters can be so cold and it gets darker earlier, so I want to take advantage of the nice weather and the fact it gets dark later to enjoy the summer and do fun, free or low cost activities.

Great video. I love how all of u r on the same page. In my family everyone tries to outdo each other. If I shared my frugal ways ( I do a lot of what was shared in video) they would make fun of me.
I’m getting ready to retire in a few months ( early retirement) and it’s scary. I live in NYC and it’s very expensive and who knows what’s coming with this crazy economy.
So thanks again for your videos and for sharing.

When closing the zip lock bags try inserting a straw in the corner of the the bag. Zip close up to the straw then you can suck
the air out. Pull the straw out and seal.

I’m going to have to give that a try! QOTD: I’m going to continue spending on only necessities. I’ve been doing it all year and it’s been going great! Thanks Paul and Emmy! Great video as always!!!

This month for me I plan on rebooting my laundry routine. I will as of now only do laundry one day a week it's usually on Friday my day off from work. I will do the laundry in the early morning hours, by 3:00 it's very hot in my area. I just so enjoy your bloopers and meeting your family. Thank you and have a great weekend.

Another great video and what a beautiful family . This month I am going to find vegetables and meat on special and freeze them . Both are dear here so I will try and find recipes and either freeze meals or chop and freeze the ingredients . If I buy frozen vegetables I get out my scales and I weigh them and put In portions and freeze . I need to due this as husband has kidney and heart disease and everything is portion control . I really enjoyed listening and reading all the comments . You are never to old to learn.
