I use Amazon Wishlists as a way to save items and return to them later to see if I really want to buy it. Most of the time I don’t buy it. Great way to avoid impulse buying.
Angela Perez I’m too scared to put it my cart. One time I forgot to remove something from the cart and I got a random item delivered. Lol. I was so annoyed when I got it.
i love your chatty videos. it's rare that there is someone willing to talk through these different scenarios, and esp from someone who spends time and effort understanding their cluttered clients
You just described my whole cluttered life. This was so helpful ❤️. I donate glasses to the Lions Club or organizations for the blind. My struggle is clothing that is past its wear date, should not be donated, but really doesn't belong in a landfill. Help!
Agree with the "someday" trap. I always say "someday" is not a day of the week, like Monday, Tuesday, etc. That day never comes. Similar to the phrase "just in case". That time never comes as well.
I have teenagers and tend to hold onto stuff because "maybe they'll need it when they move out." But in general, I've gotten pretty good at assessing the cost of rebuying something if I need it vs the "cost" of holding onto it for years. I've gotten ok with hiring services I don't really want to do (as opposed to needing to do it all myself), and that diminishes the number of supplies I need. But I must say, all of this requires having enough money (to know you can rebuy something or pay for the service, etc.) Finally being in an economic class to allow this has made a huge difference.
I've worked pretty hard at this for some time now as I get overwhelmed by clutter. I like the idea of the pic for the impulse buy idea. Thanks for a great video Kay!
We just moved to a different home. While packing, I made several trips to a goodwill type place. I don't miss any of it. Those craft things I used to do are memories and I can always start over.
Kay, I have read or viewed so many books and videos on the subject of decluttering that my mind has actually become cluttered with "how to declutter" information. If someone asked me where to start on their journey to a clutter-free life, I would tell them to watch this video of yours. It's all they need.
I found you on your video organizing your parents new home, so new to your channel. One morning I woke up thinking I can not leave this up to my children to get rid of my stuff. It has been hard to get rid of things but your video's are helping. A lot of the items I wanted to get rid I would call my daughter to see if she wanted it then it came to me she does not need any of my stuff, I would just do to her as my Mom and Grandma did to me not knowing just wanting to keep it in the family. So will go back and watch your other video's. Thank You
I’ve really had to work on the someday stuff. For me part of it is about being honest about who I am now versus the fantasy me that is going to craft, fix things, etc. one idea for the free bags and purses is to fill with snacks, hygiene supplies, etc and donate to homeless
Another great video, Kay! I definitely need help with moving the stuff I've decluttered out of my life. Making sure they go to the right place is often the reason for getting stuck. So that would really be a helpful topic.
As a teacher I can definitely relate to the ‘someday’ trap. Maybe I’ll teach that grade again, maybe I’ll need that resource, what if I need those extra bins? It’s hard, let me tell you... 🤔
Helpful video. I grew up very poor and buy too many things because I’m afraid I won’t be able to buy it later. Fear of scarcity. I cannot stand to run out of anything. If I get down to 2 tubes of toothpaste - I’ll go out and buy 4.
I feel personally attacked by number 2. 🤣🤣 Also, my house is pretty much clutter, but the thought of getting rid of it all makes me tired. I'd really like to pay someone to come clear it out. Love this video!
Thank you so much for explaining all this! Really clarified my thoughts and will help me greatly as I declutter and decide which hobbies I'll really be pursuing. lol
My whole family are hoarders & I’m not. When they see me get rid of my things they go crazy saying keep it but why keep baggage you don’t need or use. Makes no sense plus they think it’s their stuff but it’s all my stuff. I can’t stand that everybody is like this. I’m in my 30+ & I need help with showing them they don’t need half of the stuff...
I grew up with a hoarder parent and I’m the opposite! Don’t let them guilt you into keeping things. Getting rid of items you don’t need or want is very liberating! 🙂
Riding equipment. It combines 3 categories I guess. It was expensive when bought, one day I might be returning to the stables, and it's something I actively used in the past. But last time I really went to the stables was in 2010, so 9 years ago. My life has changed tremendously, but I'm still holding on to that "what if". It doesn't help that I'm friends with the stable owner and even godmother to her youngest child. I still love horses very much, but I've slowly started accepting they aren't a part of my life anymore. Actually I've moved all the equipment (apart from the helmet) to the basement storage, donated my riding shoes and sold the other pair of trousers. The good thing is they have some value, so it feels worth it to spend time taking photos, putting up an add to a Facebook group, packaging and going to the post office. For my clothes I've mostly taken them to a flea market or donated. BTW I still have a few of those "one day it will fit me" clothes too, something needs to be done about that.
This is what I needed 30 yrs ago! I like lots of "things". Lots of pet, supplies, cages and their food. Because I love animal and birds and fish and reptiles. When living in Fla I had about 20+ birds,5 big dogs and was always taking in strays! Also 4 aquariums plus lots of plants. So on my 2 days off I cleaned cages and washed dogs. I realize now I cannot save them all as much as I want to. So we only have 4 birds 1 aquarium to look at in the living room and 1 small dog. I now have time to clean my house, go out more and have company without them thinking they are at the zoo. Oh, by the way I did work at a sm avian zoo! I have scince moved to Tx. Where I dont work at a zoo. My "hobby" of bringing strays home was stopped. I miss it now but I have more money for my family and time with them. I am now very careful about my" hobbies". I felt guilty if I didnt take an animal home but my own family is better for it. I do still love animals but only pet them and say I dont have the room anymore. It's just not fair to either of us.💜😁 Love this video and all you are doing is great. Want more like this! Thankx. Oh, yes we love Clover💗
Two of these are currently very relevant to my life. I definitely horde things because I don’t want to send them to the landfill, but I’m working on that. A bigger issue is that my grandmother is a compulsive thrift shopper, and twice a year when I visit she has a literal car load worth of stuff for me. Lately it’s just bags and bags and bags of stuff. I’m pregnant and this has made the problem worse. She is also getting increasingly offended when I say no thank you to items and I feel like there is no solution besides just continuing to offend her and try to say no to as many things as I can. I still end up taking twice as much as I would have and donating a box or two to Goodwill. She’s old and not going to change her behavior at this point. It was interesting to hear that people can consider items to be an extension of themselves, and to feel personally rejected because you don’t want something. Which is sad and must be a terrible way to live...
It seems to be a phenomenon with older generations and depression-era culture in general to feel like items are scarce, so it's a huge affront to refuse on of their scarce "gifts". It is a slipperly slope with people and you're right that some people probably won't change, but I admire you for putting your foot down some of the time at least! Bless her heart :)
Most of those apply to me. I no longer sew but can't bring myself to get rid of my sewing machine. I wear cloths more than once (depending on the type of garment) but I really dislike the idea of putting 'worn' clothing back into the wardrobe. I have no idea when this became a thing with me but I definitely have 'The Chair'. I'd love to know what other people do to get around this issue.
Most people have an issue with these interlopers that don't go back in the closet but not in the wash. I have a dedicated space for them if I plan to wear them soon after, but usually, I'll hang it up on a valet hook to air out and I do end up putting it back.
We bought a movable clothing rack (it has wheels) from Ikea. Wasn't too expensive, though I wanted also nicer looking hangers to go with it, since it's standing between the living room and hallway. I still tend to clutter one or two chairs, but my husband has completely changed to using the rack, and most of my still wearable clothes are there too. BTW I got easily rid of my sewing machine, when my bother's spouse needed one. It felt good, giving it away to a family member who needed it more.
Hi! This was super helpful! Just looking to see where I can find the tips on disposing of items, I find that I have difficulty with this as well - thanks!
Such a great video!!! 🙋🏻♀️ former sucker for gift with purchase!!!! I gave away all the bags and make up items I did not use to friends / family and charity. I was sooo bad I would buy back ups and I ended up having 5 backs ups of the same lip liner looll
True for me on most things you explained. I find that by the third declutter of say pants section, then I can let go. On my expensive clothes or purses, I have them separated, hung in a small spare closet if I get back to selling online once all my decluttering is done. If not, then donate them. Blessings
Great tips. I know that buying clothes etc can be good if they’re on special offer etc but not worth it if you’re not gonna wear or use the items. For example, there’s a shop in the UK called Primark that sells clothes at lower prices & because of this some only get worn a couple of times & then either stored for years or eventually thrown away. I prefer to buy my clothes from M&S, as they are great quality & last a long time. I find the prices good too.
Hi Kay- I love watching your videos. So many good ideas!. I love organizing and cleaning. But- my husband is a clutterer and borderline hoarder. I dont buy anymore. It's all just junk I will never need. I only want quality things in my apt. I would rather get a beautiful crystal. Maybe get some fresh flowers or a plant. 👍💜😁
Hi Kay! I definitely get hung up with items that I do not know how to dispose of, for example light bulbs, all kinds of batteries, (even those which have corroded 🤔) or old thermometers which may have mercury in them, etc. I am very conscious of what goes into the landfill and our town is not very recycling, etc, friendly. I am still working on my blog post! I realize it’s incomplete! Sorry guys!
The Organized Soprano did you go to Vidcon this year? Will there be a video about it?
americanpriness1 I didn’t go to VidCon! I’m at my parents’ new house helping them organize and unpack and there WILL be a video about that! ❤️
The Organized Soprano oh wow. That sounds great. 👍
I use Amazon Wishlists as a way to save items and return to them later to see if I really want to buy it. Most of the time I don’t buy it. Great way to avoid impulse buying.
me too!
Also Amazon will send you notifications if something in your list goes on sale!
Likewise! It has worked very well for me.
I totally do this! Or i'll put it in my cart but never check out LOL
Angela Perez I’m too scared to put it my cart. One time I forgot to remove something from the cart and I got a random item delivered. Lol. I was so annoyed when I got it.
Also anxiety and having stuff around you like a cocoon to feel “safe” and “nested” is a real thing too.
That was my mom, trauma response 😔
i love your chatty videos. it's rare that there is someone willing to talk through these different scenarios, and esp from someone who spends time and effort understanding their cluttered clients

This is so interesting. Our emotional needs are astounding . How we act on them I find fascinating.

I think I only missed 1 guilty pleasure. Thanks very much for this video
I would definitely love a video about mindful shopping.
Yes!! Great idea! 💡
Thanks for another great video! They always brighten my day :)
This was an interesting video, thanks for sharing. I can relate to a few of these and have found that the more I declutter the less stress I have!
The reasons you give for clutter are so spot-on! This video really makes you think!!
Very cute dog indeed 😻
I used to have a cocker bichon mix named clover bell. She looked like a stuffed teddy bear.💕
Enjoying your videos!

It would be great for you to do a video on how to properly dispose of your clutter! Just how you mentioned, reuse or recycle 😃
Its friday friday, gotta get down on Friday!!!!! Sorry!!! ENJOY UR LIFE!!! Clovers great!!! Looking forward to the next video!!!!😀😀😀✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
Okay, I know we have the same name, but how did you get inside my head?!!😯 So guilty of so many!!
I’M SLOWLY DECLUTTERING AND MAKING PROGRESS. LET ME SAY I CAN FUNCTION BETTER IN A CLUTTERED FREE APARTMENT.
This video is very helpful. The key to dealing with clutter is understanding the reasons behind it. I appreciate you!

Oh dear, perfect score.
Holding onto clothes for when I lose those 10lbs, guilty!!🤣
That's it! Perceived value & throwing your money away. That's the exact reason I am having a struggle.
Omg Kay... 😬😬😬😬 Girl you KNOW I needed this.
I so needed this video I fit so many of these examples and it made me look around to see what goes next. I am goint to watch this again.
This was an excellent video. A mindfulness and other videos would be great. Thanks for sharing the very helpful tips and your expertise.
Helpful video.

Love this informative video! I have no trouble decluttering & do so regularly, my husband on the other hand is the opposite😟! TFS 🌼🧡🌼
LaRee Longtin same here! Lol
I sooo needed this today!!!
Thanks for sharing another great video Kay

Hi! This was super helpful! Just looking to see where I can find the tips on disposing of items, I find that I have difficulty with this as well - thanks!
Loved this video and I always enjoy hearing you talk! 🌝🌝🌝
Sending love, my friend!
I love how you just casually supported nonbinary people. That was like a warm, fuzzy little bonus in the video. A freebie that I do like.
😘
Such a great video!!!

This was great and so true!!!!
Me picking up an item in the Target Dollar Spot: Do I need it? No. Do I have a use for it? No. Do I buy it? Of course.
michelle B they used to have better stuff and I would buy $20 of junk . Thank god their stuff got expensive and less cool.
I feel you !!
Lashlove16 I agree with you 100%!
Been there! I did get one useful thing from the dollar spot and it was a little tote bag for dogs LOL
I dont buy anymore. It's all just junk I will never need. I only want quality things in my apt. I would rather get a beautiful crystal. Maybe get some fresh flowers or a plant. 👍💜😁
I"m sorry you don't like winter!! :) Come to Florida. We would welcome you. But, I don't like humidity.... lol
You’re not wrong about the humidity LOL. FRIZZ 😂
I am looking for where you have addressed this, but not having much luck there either. Please help! 😣
I'm still working on my resource list. Some of my info was incorrect, so I took it down. I'm working on having it back up corrected by tomorrow!
Mindful shopping video please 😊
Ha Ha #3. THE GREAT DEAL.... GUILTY!!! I don't do it often, but a few months ago a local supermarket had a deal on eggs (actually they always do), but it was 5 DOZEN FOR $5!!! Yes I fell for it, that resulted in 2 videos where I made quiche and custard gave away a dozen.....at least it was a $5 lesson so minimal damage done...we won't talk about the DSW shoes AGHHHHHHH, now that was a waste of $$$$. Learned my lesson, sometimes the cheap comes out expensive.
Yes yes you caught me. I'm the "Someday" person which I need to let go.
I down sized 2 years ago but and still trying to declutter to the size of my new home. I am unmotivated to try and keep my home really tidy as I know I have thing with no home. Due to a change in my circumstances I am moving into another apartment later this year and I am determined to not allow that to be so over stuffed. As I go around getting my possessions ready to move I am being really ruthless at declutter if. If I haven’t used or worn it in the last 12 months it has to go.
Video Idea- How to deal with relatives visiting and all the stuff they bring and when they take over your house. Example, I live in a small house 3 bedrooms 1bath . In July each year there is a total of 7 people.Who take over the bathroom,kitchen,2 refrigerator, screened in porch .
WOW!!!!
You mentioned having a pile of clothes that are only half dirty. How do you recommend storing those clothes?
These are what I like to call "Interlopers"...stay tuned for a video 😏
America First .... I bought a large hook, screwed it onto the wall inside my closet and put the worn clothes back on a hanger, which I then hang on the hook. All the clothes I wear to work during that week get to be worn again (in different combinations) the next week before going into the laundry.
I know some people have an extra drawer they place those clothes in!
I love your videos. ❤️
I am always asking myself where I am going to put things before I buy them. So many things I don’t buy for that reason.
Can you do a video on how to deal with the clutter of other folx you live with?
I can!
Yay for kay!!!!!😀😀😀✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
First!!!! 😊
Guilty of 1,2,5,7,8,9 and 10!! Phew I need help! 😥🙄
Brandi Minch intervention for Brandi in aisle 2
@@SM-yd8hq 😨 uh yeah looks that way!!
Everything you have not used for three months can be disposed of.
Online shopping is also very tempting.
I don’t have a clutter chair, I can hang the blouse back and remember that it has been worn once. Trousers are folded into a drawer, I remember if they have been worn.
#10 yes! 😖
Seems like 4 and 5 are the main reasons people have clutter. Not decluttering enough or at all because _"someday"_ .
I have a friend who gets EVERY free sample or coupon item, with the sole purpose to donate to the local women’s shelter.
#9 - how do you get rid of large (40") tvs?
It really depends on your town. There are certain ordinances around here regarding trashing large electronic appliances. You can probably recycle them at your local Best Buy also! Just call them up and ask. If Sometimes people use items for parts!
You play videogames?
Been a gamer all my life 😉
I am just too lazy to get rid of it!
Do you know me? lol
🤣🤣🤣
