We had some pretty intense issues with the TH-cam bots today on this video. So thank you everyone for your patience and understanding while waiting for the upload! - Kat
Three years. That's how long we waited for S7. Three smegging years... That episode aired in November 1993 & the first episode of series 7 aired in January 1997.
@@dvdmike007 November 1993 to january 1997, is only 3 years and 2 months. calling it 4 years is a stretch. "More than 3 years" you could say. But saying 3 years is fairly true.
Despite his cowardice and authoritarian side, when faced with the prospect of dining with actual Nazis, Rimmer finds himself utterly appalled - to the point he discovers the Ace Rimmer type that’s been dormant inside him. It’s a brilliant bit of telly and character development. “BETTER DEAD THAN SMEG!”
One of my favourite lines from Red Dwarf... "Hermann Göring would've been more of a laugh than Rimmer. Okay, he was drug-crazed transvestite, but at least we could've gone dancin'."
Chris Barrie was doing the Brittas Empire during that gap period, another great show, might be worth having a look at. Also, these videos have been very interesting for me. I watched most of these episodes air for the first time, and I watched them again and again more that any other show, and it's probably responsible for shaping much of my personality. The reason I've been enjoying this so much is the way you laugh the first time you hear a joke is unique, and special. And even though it's still funny every subsequent time too, it's not the same. So hearing people laugh that first laugh at jokes I've been laughing at for 30 years, vicarious as it is, has been quite captivating and nostalgic for me. I've been enjoying the "I know something you don't know" factor too, the next 2 seasons are going to be so freakin good, genuinely can't wait.
That cliffhanger is arguably one of the best in scifi history. Rimmer - who has always considered himself a coward and not very bright - gets the last laugh; he figures out that if he destroys the time drive, then their "future selves" cease to exist, and he finally summons the courage to look death in the eye all by himself, going below with a bazookoid and not knowing if he'll make it in time, or what will really happen if he destroys the time drive.
This was one of my favourite episodes ever when it came out. What a cliff hanger, and Rimmer actually figuring out what he needed to do on his own and doing the heroic thing.
I mentioned some of the bizarre elements that RD uses as a call back. Lister's brain is one such call back. It goes way back to Balance Of Power when Lister has the flashback to him and his mates in the canteen on Saturday night. One of the things used in the rhyming game the gang are playing is "I can name 8 things that go in jars". The contributions are, "pickles... jam... spaghetti" and finally, "brains". The next few lines are as follows (approximately). FRIEND (I forgot if it's Chen or Peterson): "Brains, in jars?" LISTER: "Yeah, my uncle's brain is in a jar. It's really sad." FRIEND: "Why's it sad?" LISTER: "He's not dead yet."
What's especially funny is if you recall Stasis Leak, Lister met his future self who explained that they found a way to travel through time again and he ended up with Kochanski but he was a bit of a dick. And whatever happened to put Lister in a jar probably either killed her or drove her away. The whole thing wasn't intentional, of course, but it fits nicely.
Now imagine that “what the fuck just happened!” Reaction and then having to wait over 3 years to find out what happened next. That’s what those of us viewing at the time had to go through.
Series 7 is a genuine attempt to do something new and different with the format. Does it all work? No. But it’s well intentioned and when it does, it’s brilliant.
"All we gotta do is keep our heads" is another favourite joke, worthy of "Airplane!" I also always enjoyed Rimmer's one heroic moment. "Then I say FIGHT."
Was stuck in a bed in hospital when this dropped; had a hankering for some Red Dwarf to lighten my mood, but Plex wasn't working, couldn't log into TH-cam, but thought at least I could watch the Gals get Dwarfed, and bam! There was possibly the best episode over! Ready and waiting. This story does well for being set entirely on the bug (right? Well, mostly?) The future selves are appalling in all the right ways. The physical humour is there in the cockpit scenes. It comes together wonderfully, and that ending! Left us guessing for fucking years! I remember having a debate with my Yr 12 English Teacher about it. Yes, sadly, after this we get the writers' split... And as I've said all along - there is a very noticeable drop in - Red Dwarfiness... I hope you persist though - give the rest of the series a shot, because much like Doctor Who - sometimes a Doctor might come along that you don't "feel", but that doesn't mean other people are not loving them just as much.
Please keep watching. 7 and 8 are huge style shifts but have great moments, BTE is a good parody (it kept the show alive when it was almost gone forever and gave the new network confidence to commission season 10) 10-12 are good with some absolute stand out fantastic episodes. Kryten - The little tin opener he used to pick his ears clean with Gals - How?? Guys watching - Well you see that little hook for bottle opening......
I found your Red Dwarf reaction videos and watched Series 1-6 in 4 days. I just realized that since Series 7&8 are 8 episodes each, and considering they come out weekly, it's going to take 4 MONTHS to get through! I guess that's better than the massive years long gaps that occurred when they originally aired! Time to go back and watch some Doctor Who reactions in the meantime! Keep smoking those kippers gals and I'll be back for breakfast!
The script wasn't fully finished when they were filming and the script was on screens dotted all over so the cast could only see them. Plus we had to wait many years for the continuation. There was a deleted scene which showed an ending where the crew celebrated the defeat of the future selves and congratulating rimmer.
As a kid, I remember watching this episode when it came out. It really made an impact on me, that characters who were mostly just idle slobs for 6 series, took such a strong moral stand and would rather die than live and become immoral monsters.
Just to say season 7, episode 1 history lesson for you ladies. Now you know how we felt the first time round. Then, we had to wait nearly 3 years to find out what happened. And what an opener it was. Up there as one of my favourites, as are so many episodes. As always, great video, ladies.

One theory i always liked was that at 11:57 (in this video) they hit an unreality pocket. You know it's unreality because Rimmer is brave. And so they weren't destroyed...
I didn’t encounter Red Dwarf until 1997, when I was 12, so I was lucky I didn’t have to wait to see what happened next. I didn’t watch the seasons and episodes in chronological order when watching them for the first time, but I was still able to enjoy the self contained plot of each episode. Yes, the To Be Continued. This show loves to throws surprises at it audience, even all this time later! Just remember how long we had to wait for the next part! (three and a half years!)
For years and I mean YEARS, I only had the first 6 series on VHS and so while Series 7 existed, I never knew what happened after this cliffhanger until I finally managed to get series 7 on DVD I was so happy to finally get my answer haha!
I watched this on its original run and little 9-year-old me was excited and couldn't wait to see what happened in the next series. We had to wait four years. Also, the next series is much criticised by some fans but I still think it is strong.
The joke at the end of the last episode about the horrible thing that happened to Lister was originally just Rimmer smeggong with them, but when they edited it when they realised it made for good foreshadowing. There's also a cool fan theory that the future Lister in series 2 is the same future lister from this episode, you know, before becoma brain in a jar.
Yeah it's funny because they wrote 2 books together - Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life - then they split as a writing duo and both proceeded to write 2 separate 3rd books, which go in very different directions.
You should be thankful that series 7 is already there for you, I remember being in the Pub and debating with others about what was going to happen in the next series...years later we got the answer.
it's wasn't just 3 years, it was 3 years with our childhood brains, 3 years now as an adult might as well be a week. Back then it was a literal lifetime.
Exactly. I was 10 years old when this aired. I remember us all talking about it in school the next day. I was 14 years old when the next episode aired. I was basically a completely different person.
At least you guys can load up series 7 whenever you want. We had to wait for years to get an answer, for a while I assumed we were never going to even get a series 7.
No fight. In fact, Doug Naylor has said that if anyone finds out why Rob Grant decided to end their partnership to let him know. Mind you, he said that some time ago, and the reasons may be more evident to him (or others) now; one generalized reason Rob has given was that he felt all they were doing was Red Dwarf, but the partnership ended while they were working on a completely unrelated project.
The end of this episode featured Rimmer becoming a hero without being Ace. It gave the impression that he always had that heroic potential but he'd avoided and suppressed it with all his negative character traits.
Yes, quite the Season finale right? A wild ride, with a surprising cliffhanger ending. And then it didn't pick up again until several years later. Crazy. I do remember the long wait for season 7 as I was watching episodes on PBS in the period.
"how did their future selves get so awful?" Well, for all his other faults Lister is the conscience of the foursome. Presumably, reducing him to a brain in a jar also removes him as a moral guardrail for the rest of the Boys From The Dwarf, so over time they indulge their worst impulses and become the smeggiest of smegheads, such that even Rimmer prefers to die fighting rather than become them. (Fans had four years with nothing to do but speculate and theorycraft after this episode ended and before there were any "answers" in the form of a new episode)
Can I just tell you how reassuring it is to have you react in the exact same way I reacted when watching this "live" back in the day. It was on late at night and when the TBC came up, I screamed "No!! You bastards!!" so loud my dad came in and told me off!
This episode ended on a "To Be Continued" in 1993. Season 7 didn't happen until 1997. Then Rob and Doug fell out. For just over 3 years it looked like Season 6 was the end of the show. Looking back on it, it felt a hell of a lot longer but that might be due to my age (young teen). One reason for such a long gap was Craig Charles being falsely accused of rape and spending three months in prison on remand. He was acquitted of all charges.
Yeah, at the time it felt like everything was on pause because of Craig Charles' trial, and that they didn't even start thinking about another series until that was done with. With all due respect to the other cast members who are also fantastic, Lister is the basis of the sitcom and so you can't have Red Dwarf without Craig Charles.
Not only did we have to wait years for the next season. there was no guarantee that there would be more... Not the first time Red Dwarf fans had to live with that... or the last...
Alternative ending: Kryten: Chilled margaritas sirs. We have much to celebrate. Mr Rimmer destroyed the time drive, deleted our future selfs and saved us all. Rimmer: Please Kryten, it’s not something I’m proud of. Kryten: Furthermore, we’ve relocated Red Dwarf’s vapour trail and are barely 6 days behind. May I take the liberty of proposing a toast. To the present. All: To the present! 🥂 Lister: 🤮 They aren’t margaritas. That urine re-cyc! Kryten: ☹️
Yep, I remember that. I forget where from, I assume it was one of the Smeg Ups videos. Search youtube for "Red Dwarf out of time original ending" if you want to watch it
We had such long discussions in the nerd community about what was going to happen, and it was years before we found out. However, if you pay attention, there was one last warp just before all the worst happened. I think this ending was a homage to the finale of "Blake's 7".
The reason for the long delay between seasons was the breakup of the Grant/Naylor partnership. The pair cited creative differences for the split, which happened while they were working on one of their other projects. The good news: 1) You don't have to wait as long as the rest of us did to watch the next season. And 2) Lister's log cabin display made from chocolate fingers can give you good ideas for creative displays of Jalapeno Cheetos to help you get that sweet, sweet endorsement.😂
This was broadcast on an unusually warm and sunny November Thursday. I was shouting, "Go on, Rimmer lad!" It's his finest hour, but you'll need to watch one or two other things to get the full picture and I don't mean S7
I could be wrong but I suspect the reason early TNG "looks older" when compared to early RD may be because until US TV networks switched from film to digital cameras, the standard was to broadcast in a lower definition than in the UK, which always used higher quality production. Even the TNG episodes that have been remastered look subtly different than UK tv of the same time.
I remember something about Craig Charles and the writers were having issues so they had a working title for this episode 'Goodbye David Lister' I was a kid when this aired and watching them all die sucked. Then had to wait over 3 years for the next one.
Even longer when you are a kid. I remember watching this episode at age 6/7, then eagerly staying up with the family four years later at age 11/12 for it. 1997 was a big year for young me, Red Dwarf returned, DS9 was in its prime seasons, Voyager existed, Lexx was broadcasting and being it's coked out self, Babylon 5 had just had what we thought would be it's final season and the government was finally replaced.
To Kat and Paula Kryten looks different for the recasting but also because season 4 said why. Basically after Kryten left the Dwarf after his first episode he crashed the space bike. The crew found him and Lister was the one who repaired him he would've had to do some work on the head
On the most flimsy of theories, I think the future evil dwarfers are the alternate crew from the "stasis leak" episode. Because the Rimmer from that other crew had a moustache, and it makes sense Lister would use a time machine to find and marry Kochanski.
I'd like to explain what happened, but I don't think the comments section can take it. I mean, it's garbled, confusing, and duller than an in-flight magazine published for Air Belgium.
Yes, long old wait for Series 7. This has been the one I've been most looking forward to you doing and it didn't disappoint. Think I'm going over to the Patreon because I'm so curious to see you react to how they made this episode and how it affects what you think of it. They basically did it on the fly and called it Out of Time because they were also... Out of time... Because of the obstacles, I genuinely cannot believe how good this episode turned out to be
We had some pretty intense issues with the TH-cam bots today on this video. So thank you everyone for your patience and understanding while waiting for the upload! - Kat

There is a theory that the time traveling Future Lister and Rimmer from Stasis Leak are younger version of the future crew from this episode.
How?! How in the decades of me watching RD have I never thought of this?!?! This fixes a huge plothole I’ve had. Thank you random chatter
@@Hyzen0_0 I agree, that makes a lot of sense.
I absolutely love how the ending broke both of your brains. The silence was sooo funny lol
"how did their future selves get so awful?"
Well, for all his other faults Lister is the conscience of the foursome.
Red Dwarf has ALWAYS been ahead of its time!
The first I saw of this episode was the cut ending from the smeg-ups tape.
Needless to say it was pretty intense stuff to cap off all those bloopers.
Can I just tell you how reassuring it is to have you react in the exact same way I reacted when watching this "live" back in the day. It was on late at night and when the TBC came up, I screamed "No!! You bastards!!" so loud my dad came in and told me off!
Paula's comic timing is perfect, I don't know how she does it! 😉
There may be many naysayers, but I love the chances and new directions that the next three outings bring. Keep an open mind and Dwarf on!
"Better dead than smeg!"
Rimmer talking and acting morally and heroic at the end? I guess it was the end of the universe...
There was an outtake in series 7 where the dreads fell over Craig's face, and he exclaimed "I'm back in jail".
Not only did we have to wait years for the next season. there was no guarantee that there would be more...
Not the first time Red Dwarf fans had to live with that... or the last...
Look at the gap after season 8... hard times. Thanks for all the awesome uploads!
Yee, we didn't think there was going to be any more Dwarf.
Alternative ending:
Kryten: Chilled margaritas sirs.
Lister: 🤮 They aren’t margaritas. That urine re-cyc!
Kryten: ☹️
This, this right here XD
That's actually a deleted scene. I've seen it on the original Smeg Outs VHS tape.
Yep, I remember that. I forget where from, I assume it was one of the Smeg Ups videos.
Search youtube for "Red Dwarf out of time original ending" if you want to watch it
@@VirtualKnight64 it's the original ending the creators didn't know the show would continue. It was meant to be this ending
We had such long discussions in the nerd community about what was going to happen, and it was years before we found out. However, if you pay attention, there was one last warp just before all the worst happened.
I think this ending was a homage to the finale of "Blake's 7".
Stick with it lovely ladies ❤😂😊
The reason for the long delay between seasons was the breakup of the Grant/Naylor partnership. The pair cited creative differences for the split, which happened while they were working on one of their other projects. The good news: 1) You don't have to wait as long as the rest of us did to watch the next season. And 2) Lister's log cabin display made from chocolate fingers can give you good ideas for creative displays of Jalapeno Cheetos to help you get that sweet, sweet endorsement.😂
It's actually worse than that. Craig Charles legal issues were the biggest reason we had to wait.
The other half of the reason was Craig Charles being wrongly accused of rape.
This was broadcast on an unusually warm and sunny November Thursday. I was shouting, "Go on, Rimmer lad!" It's his finest hour, but you'll need to watch one or two other things to get the full picture and I don't mean S7
Now to view the next episode it like we did you have to wait 3 years 🤣
I could be wrong but I suspect the reason early TNG "looks older" when compared to early RD may be because until US TV networks switched from film to digital cameras, the standard was to broadcast in a lower definition than in the UK, which always used higher quality production. Even the TNG episodes that have been remastered look subtly different than UK tv of the same time.
I remember something about Craig Charles and the writers were having issues so they had a working title for this episode 'Goodbye David Lister'
I was a kid when this aired and watching them all die sucked.
I’ve been waiting weeks for this particular reaction and I am not disappointed
I'd like to explain what happened, but I don't think the comments section can take it. I mean, it's garbled, confusing, and duller than an in-flight magazine published for Air Belgium.
I was a freshman in high school when this aired and I had graduated before we got more. I'd almost given up on getting more. So happy that we did.
I think it’s worth noting that UK sitcoms work on very small budgets when compared to the budgets available to US programme makers.
You know what would break the internet right now ? If Galifrey Gals took a month long vacation from recording Red Dwarf - it'd FRY OUR MINDS !
It'd be a cliffhanger on top of a cliffhanger !
The 3 years weren't a vacuum of content. IIRC the 2 Smeg up compilation videos, Kryten hosting, came out - Smeg Ups in 1994 & Smeg Outs in 1995.
A 3 year cliffhanger
Yeah, for the first time after this series we wernt even sure if it would come back.
Because of the obstacles, I genuinely cannot believe how good this episode turned out to be
Don't worry Gallifrey Gals. The Boys from the Dwarf will be back ... being brave and kicking bottom!
They also made a movie, which was actually pretty good, very Red dwarf.
