I am really impressed. This is such a clear and concise explanation that every time i have a question, he answers it almost immediately. I hope this guys real life job is a teacher, trainer or instructor.
Great job, very informative even for someone like me who has a bit of experience with sailing games lol. If my friends pick up this game and are lost I'll probably be sending them this video
thank you, i was watching lots of videos, but yours seemed to not only help me understand these concepts, but also wrap my head around the terminology.
The brits were born with a knack for narration. Here in the states, our finest products are described by the British in our commercials. That accent is the sound of _quality._ 😂
Good video I'm from New Zealand and sailing is a large part of our life here I had already figured it out. I did enjoy watching the TH-camrs struggle with this game I was thinking of putting up something but I'm not a TH-camr so good on you. 😁
I don't know why I am watching this video because I am a sailor in real life, but it is a good video none the less Edit: Also spar is a term used for any beam on a ship/boat so the mast is a spar, the gaff(if there is one) is a spar, the boom(if there is one) is a spar and on a lateen the yard is a spar so you aren't wrong, but what you called a spar at the beginning is more specifically a yard
Just tried sailing Gold City to Alchemist Island via dead-reckoning due South. Two an' a half days out and I *KNOW* I've missed it, but I don't know which side I've sailed past. Ho hum, New Game button here we come . . .
The rule of thumb I formed is, at least with the dhow, the shallowest angle I can get is about 15-20°, beam reach 40-45° and the most 80-85° on a run in relation to the sail, everything else is either attempting to find the inbetween or simply being happy with going slower as to not complicate my life. It's not in any way precise, but following this at least I'm not stressing myself constantly looking over the sailing guide and touching stuff.
if this game gets some good fishing mechanics to overcome the long waiting times after you managed to make the boat go as best as it can, I am so buying it ^^
Hi again, thanks so much for your guide. Any chance for a guide on navigation, currently trying to head to dragon cliffs on starter ship. Cant figure out the norht star and how to use the sextant thingy
I don't plan on really doing many more videos unless people are really struggling with things. I made this purely because there wasn't any good tutorials out there for people trying this game out and I didn't want the game to miss out on players. If you want help on navigation, join the discord. The other folks there and myself would be more than happy to help!
So the lateen sail behaves similar to a gaff sail (highest force at 45deg). what about the other boats/sails? would it make sense for the square sail to wear instead of tack (travel windward using jibes instead of tacks )?
Yes, wearing is going to be a simpler manoeuvre in the square-rigged ships but a skilfully executed tack will allow for less loss of seaway to windward. The squares need work in this game I think. The cog has too much weather helm and the brig is wholly unfinished with much work still needed in many areas, including her performance to windward which is barely even 10°. The junks seem to point a little higher than the dhows, in my experience, but I have not performed a direct comparison, so I could be mistaken. Either way, they perform very similarly.
Yes, let the wind hit the sail square on when the wind is behind you, but go back to using an angle when the wind starts to come more from the beam (side) of the vessel.
Is it normal for a sailboat to run with the sail pushing against the mast? Seems off. Shouldn't there be a way to always have it so its being blown away from the mast? Would thing only option be to do like a 270 degree turn to port?
Well, here I am after giving it a go. Left port without picking up any mission to just get to the next visible point of land. Found myself waking up at night facing the wind and dead stopped. I wonder if there is a reset by "abandoning ship" so to speak. It's a survival game, so I assume death resets the game? Edit: I tried the nose push and see it works here, so maybe there's still hope
Yes, you can push the nose although the effect has been heavily reduced since I made my videos. Also, you can now push upon the spars and sails to help them catch wind when you’re in irons. Good luck!
If you let the sail out until it flaps, it will be pointing into the wind, regardless of where the boat is pointing. If you let it all the way out and it's still full (not flapping), then you're dead downwind (running). A good rule of thumb for sail setting is let the sail out until it just starts flapping, then pull it in until it stops. That is roughly the most efficient place for the sail to be.
Yes, unfortunately it did. I’m pretty sure I mention this in the description. Just skip ahead to when the screen changes and the video is fine after that. Sorry if it wasn’t clear.
@@TheTurtleMelon Not to bad buddy! Things going well with you? I happened to be clearing some hard disk space the other day and came across old videos of us sessioning pubg, lol. Good times!
@@Deadmode yeah yeah man, just been continuing on the youtube grind, just hit 5k subs so thats nice! funny, similar thing happened to me last month, that was a great summer! we should play some stuff again sometime soon, we used to duos like every night for a few months!
I've done real sailing and this is a good explanation of how to get the boat moving. Good job.
You know it's a good game when a basic guide is 40 minutes long
This was the shortest 40min video I have ever watched! Amazing explanation! ^^

Glad you found the video useful! I work in sales but much of my job is teaching new customers how to use our product, so you're half right!
i love this game, never had so much fun going from point a to point b

I know the basics of sailing but still watched this with pleasure! This game looks lovely. Would love to see a square sail guide at some point!
Great job on the video! You have a really good knowledge of boats and sailing.

Yo this is really funny because the exact same thing happened to me
17:00 NPC boat sails directly into the wind...
Great help my friend thanks for the info. My head hurts but I'll get better I hope. ⛵

Im interested in seeing the difficult journeys.
Great video
Rode a storm from neverdin to gold rock city
got there in like half a day in my starter boat would fly black sky again
I did not notice that the different regions had difficulty, I jumped right into Aestrin because it looked cooler to me hahah!

Steamunlocked
Really well done. Thanks for the help good sir !! :)
Naval history would look very different if "get out and push" was a valid option 😂😂😂
Lmmfao! Yes... this is very true!
I already now how to sail irl but i wnna learn how to pull sheet in and stuff this was so helpful

Excellent video, even I understood it. :)
It may be cool to see an updated guide now that the game has changed a bit
Very instructive!
Glad you think so!
Did you mean to be on the simulator page at 8:09?
So the lateen sail behaves similar to a gaff sail (highest force at 45deg).

Not sure if it’s just me due to the other comments here, but the “slides” used in the first half don’t capture/update properly.
what if the wind is coming from behind me? can i then have the sail in a 90 degree angle to the wind?
Yes, let the wind hit the sail square on when the wind is behind you, but go back to using an angle when the wind starts to come more from the beam (side) of the vessel.
Nice video!
when i turn the winch the sail doesnt even move. i think the game is broken.
Is it normal for a sailboat to run with the sail pushing against the mast? Seems off. Shouldn't there be a way to always have it so its being blown away from the mast? Would thing only option be to do like a 270 degree turn to port?
For this kind of rig, yes.
Nice video. Do you have the link to the NED page? The old one with flash does no longer work. Thanks.
Awsome mate thanks.

Awesome thank you.
I have yet to start the game, i want to ask how to know wind direction? Is it by how much it fills up the sail?
If you let the sail out until it flaps, it will be pointing into the wind, regardless of where the boat is pointing. If you let it all the way out and it's still full (not flapping), then you're dead downwind (running). A good rule of thumb for sail setting is let the sail out until it just starts flapping, then pull it in until it stops. That is roughly the most efficient place for the sail to be.
Just learned: This type of sail is called a lateen sail. 😃
Did the video and audio desync? I can hear you explaining but the image itself is not updating in a lot of places
Yes, unfortunately it did. I’m pretty sure I mention this in the description. Just skip ahead to when the screen changes and the video is fine after that.
Sorry if it wasn’t clear.
Should have hot keys for the sails, so we don't have to move back and forth.
When do i have to use the anchor?
Whenever you want to secure the boat away from a typical dock.
i want to play this game but end up as a sailor
Losing light, can't see what you're doing!
I’ve realised I am not getting the sails right as a am CRAWLING compared to this 😂
I’m used to telltales.
Waiting for it to get to console
I doubt that will happen, but check the discord for any information.
